Diesel Draggin': GM pulls it out in duel with rivals

GM pulls it out in duel with rivals

"BEISEKER, ALTA.—It's no wonder General Motors set the public introduction of the new diesel and transmission powertrain for its pickup line right here in oil country — four of every 10 sales of heavy duty diesel pickups are to oilpatchers.

Therein lay another problem, though. With no new pickup until next year, what to do? GM laid on a drag strip!

To show off the performance of the new 6.6 L Duramax diesel and six-speed Allison transmission in its 2006 truck, GM brought along the current diesel-powered offerings from Ford and Dodge."

Yay for GM. That Alison Transmission is very nice.

The Dodge is the nicest truck IMO. I just love that big rig styling.

There have been quite a few Powerstroke fans running their mouths on this website lately. I hope this will bring them back to reality. They know who they are.

The new 6.6 has more torque than both ford at 590 and Dodge at 610... I would hope it could out pull the competition... Great to see them show that GM has the advantage in the Diesel Market

Re: Diesel Draggin': GM pulls it out in duel with rivals

Don't quote me on this, but i have heard from a couple sources, that they are working on the new alison tranny, and they are designing it to handle 800-1000 lb ft of torque, i was pumped when i heard that, becuz you know what that means, a STRONGER DURAMAX. Thats right GM makes the best diesel truck. I have personally experienced all the diesels and no question the duramax will blow them away. The dodge doesn't know how to shift and all the shifts are hard, and the ford has major turbo lag. My next truck will for sure be a Duramax, But just got my truck in Nov, so i have to keep it for a couple years, give the new trucks one year to get the kinks out.

Keep it GM i Love the SUVs lets see seom awesome trucks.

The new 6 speed is a powerful truck. I have several friends who pull 10 to 20k on a regular basis(not on a grade) and they love them. All of them have jumped from one truck to the other. They all came back to the Sierra because of how they pulled.

Re: Diesel Draggin': GM pulls it out in duel with rivals

After recently spending some time at both Ford and Dodge dealers looking around at everything including HD trucks, I'd rather have the "old" GMT-800 Heavy-Duty anyways.

Re: Diesel Draggin': GM pulls it out in duel with rivals

Im glad someone found this article. My friend and I were just arguing about the new 6.6L Duramax w/Allison vs. his 2000 F350 with the power stroke. He thinks if they hooked up, he would pull it around like it was nothing. This will show his ass.

Re: Diesel Draggin': GM pulls it out in duel with rivals

The Duramax is a really great engine, I wish I could have afforded one when I bought my Ram, The Duramax is just to expensive. I looked at a few 01/02 Silverados with the Duramax, even the ones with 150K+ miles were $20K+, I got my 96 Ram with 172K+ miles ans it runs like new. I expect it to go for atleast 400K+, Im not sure if I would trus a Duramax to do 400K like the Cummins will, mabey the would I dont know. That and the Silverado's sit about the same height as a 2wd Ram. But If I could pick a new one I would deffinatly pick a Duramax. Even though I think the new Rams look best, & have tons more interior space. IMP

Re: Diesel Draggin': GM pulls it out in duel with rivals

Well of course the gearing helps. The 5-speed Allison would have done the same I think, since the only change was the addition of the 6th gear on top of 5th. Still, the extra torque helps too...and of course that the Duramax has its peak at 1600 RPM, same as the Cummins. The Ford has it's peak at 2000.
