SSR Production To End Five Months Early

Link: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...ticleId=108980

LANSING, MI — Chevrolet will shut down its Lansing, Michigan, plant for good March 17 ending production of the SSR pickup, the Associated Press reported.

In November, GM announced that it would close the Lansing Craft Centre along with eight other North American facilities by 2008. The Lansing plant's summer closure was moved up due to the SSR's low sales.

Re: SSR Production To End Five Months Early

Can you imagine the money lost on this one?

Why did it have to be so complicated to produce?

Would it have sold as a non-convertible at $10,000 less?

Re: SSR Production To End Five Months Early

Why was it built in the first place?

That's the real question.

Doesn't Lansing make the XLR or something, too?

XLR runs along the Corvette line in Bowling Green, KY.

The SSR was the only product made at the Craft Centre, not that it matters any longer - the plant that is.

Re: SSR Production To End Five Months Early

I love the SSR, there are a bunch of them here in central Indiana where I live. I didnt like the first ones with the 5.3l those were kinda weak, but since they got the LS2 with the 6-speed option they are really cool. I figured once they upgraded them with the LS2 that sales would really take off but that did not happen. Oh well, mabey they'll come out with something better?

The same question needs to be asked about the Ford GT? Really, why?

are you serious? a car that is getting sold at prices considerably higher than MSRP? you've got to be on crack dude.

the SSR was a good idea that was ruined by bad execution and an incredibly high price. the SSR was a waste of resources that could have been (and should have been) used on the Camaro that should be on the streets and in dealerships now. now i only wonder if the SSR will ever be considered collectible or if it will forever be considered a mistake that should never have been made?

Right. Because GM said $30,000. GM was $12,000+ optimistic.

They delivered a cool looking, but useless overweight, underpowered, truck thing that no one really knew what to do with.

The cost of putting a Camaro into production would far exceed that of the SSR.

Edsels are collectible.

Unhappy Re: Chevy SSR Production To End Five Months Early

Aside from the engine, GM really did nothing to update or makeover the SSR. Anyone that wanted one was going to get one in the first two years of production anyhow. It's too bad they had nothing to follow it up with. You would think they could've built something there. What's even worse is that a bunch of people are going to lose their jobs because of GM's "management". Sadly, the positive news and momentum out of Detroit has ended. We're back to business as usual now.
