Chevrolet Tahoe arrives in Japan

http://www.yanase.co.jp/lineup/chev/

http://www.automotive.mitsui.co.jp/tahoe/index.html

I thought it was interesting to find that as Americans are not wanting SUVs like the Tahoe, it is being exported to Japan.

I also noticed that the Tahoe was not on GM Japans website, why is that?

Re: Chevrolet Tahoe arrives in Japan!!!

It's just a useless exercise by GM.
They'll probably sell about 5.

Re: Chevrolet Tahoe arrives in Japan!!!

I'd feel stupid driving a Tahoe in Japan. They probably think of a Tahoe like we think of those International trucks.

Re: Chevrolet Tahoe arrives in Japan!!!

it seems like a waste sending the Tahoe to Japan, how big is the full size SUV market in Japan? 5?

Re: Chevrolet Tahoe arrives in Japan!!!

There are a decent number of older and newer American cars and SUVs there. The Japanese loved the Astro.

Yanase has been a GM importer for a looong time and if they didn't see the effort making money they wouldn't have done it. They won't sell like a Honda Fit, but they'll move a few as they already sell Escalades and H2s.

Could not disagree more. Tahoe is a very modern vehicle and GM makes hybrid models, Toyota doesn't. A normal Tahoe also get better mileage.

I for one would love to tour around in a Tahoe through Tokyo.

As someone else said they wouldn't do it if there wasn't money to be made. They've certainly figured out the number of vehicles they have to sell to break even, and would be pretty sure they're going to sell more than thet before they do it.

Re: Chevrolet Tahoe arrives in Japan!!!

They also sell/sold the Trailblazer there if memory serves. Never really did all that well (you'd be hard pressed to find one on Japanese roads), but it wasn't as "over the top" for Japan as a Tahoe would be. It won't fit into most parking spaces, and the "Kei" car rules there, after all.

I'd guess the market for the Tahoe there is similar to the market for the Monroe Ironhide conversion of the GMC Topkick here. That's to say, a very few buyers for a huge truck meant to stand out of the crowd.

Maybe some Astro buyers of yore -- a surfer subculture that opens up the hatch and fills it with speakers to breakdance to on portable fiberglass dance floors at the beach.

Americans don't want SUV's like the Tahoe? I guess we don't live in the same area because they are very popular where I live.

I agree with you, dindak. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I think more consumers find beauty in what I believe is the more attractive FS SUV: the Chevrolet Tahoe.
