Waltrip's crew chief thrown out for illegal substance in engine
http://sports.yahoo.com/nascar/news?...v=ap&type=lgns
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- A second day of scandal hit the Daytona 500 on Wednesday when two-time winner Michael Waltrip's crew chief and team director were thrown out of NASCAR's biggest race for cheating. The two were suspended indefinitely after an illegal substance was found during inspection for the season-opening race. Waltrip, docked 100 points, will be allowed to participate in Thursday's races that determine the field for NASCAR's biggest event of the year. David Hyder, his crew chief, was thrown out of the garage and fined $100,000. Team director Bobby Kennedy also was kicked out. ``This is not the way you want to enter the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, by any means,'' said Jim Aust, president of Toyota Racing Development. ``But circumstances are what they are, and we'll support NASCAR in any way we can to help to help them find a resolution to the issue.

Re: Waltrip's crew chief thrown out for illegal
UPDATE on this
the mysterious oil is believed to be sterno, cooking fuel added to their mix to bump up the octane. They say he was able to get 2 mph faster in practices before they checked him. His car has been impounded and he has to run the backup car Speed channel just reported that waltrips crew is adding bondo to his BACKUP car because it doesnt fit the camry template, too aerodynamic.

Re: Waltrip's crew chief thrown out for illegal substance in engine
A bit of insight: 4 other teams have been punished, including one of Jack Roush's teams. The irony is incredible, especially after Roush's harsh comments about Toyota teams. Ken Francis, crew chief for the #9 Dodge driven by Kasey Kahne, has also been suspended.
The top teams almost always push the rules. What Waltrip did though was pretty foolish. Toyota is pissed, and rightfully so. Rumours are swirling that Toyota may even break off their relationship with Waltrip after this debacle. Also here is a relevant quote: Quote:

Re: Waltrip's crew chief thrown out for illegal substance in engine
Thats a way to get an image in NASCAR, although not the way I would recommend.
Im no fan of Toyota, but that is a bit low and irresponsible. The only thing left is how will the public and such react to how they did so far in NASCAR. But when it comes to racing though, Id rather watch the vette, new supra, new GT-R, viper, stang, and 911 duke it out on the Speed GT for a real race.

Re: Waltrip's crew chief thrown out for illegal substance in engine
cant say i have ever been a waltrip fan (he has the craziest hair in NASCAR) but for a first year team owner/operator he is screwed. My question is of all the recent suspensions including Chad Knaus last year, why doesnt the driver get in any trouble? You can't tell me the driver is that clueless. Everytime you see a picture of a driver in the garage he always is in discussion with someone from the crew working on the car, they have to be involved in it, they are the one telling the crew how it needs to be set up. NASCAR needs to get more strict with the actual driver. Hey TOYOTA good luck on a horrible start to the season

They only missed covering up some air holes.

I simply stated the facts, whether or not you can handle that is up for debate. The facts are 4 other teams along with Waltrip's team have been punished for cheating and breaking the rules. Also it was stated explicitly by Robin Pemberton that it was strictly a team issue, and not involving any manufacturers. |
