New V8 Rules Set

V8 Supercars Australia
9 February 2009
www.v8supercars.com.au

The rules for the V8 Supercar Championship have finally been put to bed amid a host of changes designed to spark new life into the series.

Following a meeting of the V8 Supercar board at the new three-level business offices of the series managers at Nerang in the Gold Coast's western fringe, the most hotly debated topic will see continuation of a single qualifying session to determine the grid for dual-race weekends.

Race distances have also been set with a mix of 100km, 200km formats spread across the sprint weekends.

It had been argued long and hard whether to implement separate qualifying sessions for the Saturday and Sunday races but that was vetoed.

The rule now places even more on Saturday because whether a car qualifies on the grid will determine its starting position for the Sunday race regardless of the finishing position in the opening race on Saturday.

The qualifying formula staged in three parts will return with the exception that the final part will see a return of the top 10 shootout, driven by television executives who argue that it presents a much better spectacle for viewers.

Race distances have been given an overhaul with most sprint rounds running a 100km Saturday race with a 200km race on Sunday.

However at signature meetings at Hamilton, New Zealand, Townsville and Sydney the dual races will be set at 200km each.

Many of the wholesale changes disclosed during the L&H 500 at Phillip Island last September have been approved including the abolition of pit stop windows.

The new super soft compound tyre will also make its debut exclusively at Winton, Symmons Plains, Hidden Valley, Sandown, Queensland Raceway and Barbagallo.

What is considered a bigger x-factor is the fact that teams will be permitted to use whatever tyre they see fit across the course of the weekend placing more emphasis on strategies.

There will no longer be official recognition of a round winner with a podium to be staged for each of the 26 races across the 14-round season.

The V8 series will feature a grid of 30 cars and the board is still considering accepting wildcard entries for the endurance races at Phillip Island and Bathurst.

It is believed that applications from teams to enter a wildcard entry must meet a June deadline.

Drivers Wary About Qualifying Changes

V8 Supercars Australia
20 February 2009
www.v8supercars.com.au

The massive emphasis placed on qualifying sessions for the 2009 V8 Supercar Championship season has raised the ire of main game drivers.

This year, qualifying determines the grid for both the Saturday and Sunday races as part of the biggest makeover in V8 Supercars’ 12-year history.

The V8 Supercars Australia Board debated adding an additional qualifying session for the Sunday race before deciding that the Saturday session would determine both grids as the fairest and least demanding system for the teams.

2008 Champion Jamie Whincup is still undecided about whether the changes will be beneficial for drivers.

“I’m not sure that it’s a good thing or a bad thing and it will depend where you qualify,” the TeamVodafone driver said.

“If you qualify well it’s a big plus but if you don’t qualify well you are at a massive disadvantage.

“I liked it the way it was, but I’m open to change.”

Holden Racing Team’s Garth Tander said the changes which placed a lot more weight on the qualifying session were not unfair because drivers have been given advanced warning.

“It’s not like we all rocked up to Clipsal and they threw this at us,” the 2007 Champ laughed.

“We all know they are the rules so it’s not unfair but it doesn’t mean we will agree with them.”

Tander believes the changes place too much emphasis on qualifying.

“Qualifying is now the most singularly important session of the weekend.

“If you have a bad qualifying session and you do a good job coming back through the field in the first race, you don’t get rewarded for that,” he explained.

“In saying that, if you are a traditionally good qualifier, and I’d like to think that I am, it’s not so much of a problem.”

Whincup was a big advocate of the rule changes in general.

“This year there is a massive amount of change which is a good thing,” he said.

“I think in recent times we have just kept up but with the new Board we are being innovative and looking ahead.”

Whincup said the addition of a ‘soft’ compound tyre which teams must use at least once during racing at selected weekends was the biggest change “by a long shot”.

“Having a tyre that is two seconds faster for five or six laps and then significantly slows down is definitely going to change things,” he said.

“It will create a lot of passing and create huge variables for teams.

“If I put my V8 Supercar cap on, yes, it’s a big plus and will create a better entertainment value, but putting my driver cap on it’s going to be frustrating getting passed by a guy on a faster tyre.

“I pray the best team over the weekend wins the round and the best team over the year wins the Championship.”

Engines A Priority On Little’s Agenda

V8 Supercars Australia
19 January 2009
www.v8supercars.com.au

V8 Supercars’ new Technical Director, Campbell Little, says ironing out technical issues and reducing engine costs are high on his agenda.

Little, who spent four years with TeamVodafone and was with Stone Brothers Racing for nine years beforehand, was last week appointed the position with V8 Supercars Australia.

“Cost containment is on everybody’s lips,” Little explained.

“Six months ago we talked about doing something to try to reduce engine costs as they are the biggest expense after people (team employees) and accommodation (for employees at rounds).”

Little said the most obvious move to reduce engine costs was to increase the life of the V8 power plants.

But he said the introduction of the 85 per cent ethanol blended fuel to the Championship was an obstacle to an immediate introduction of longer life engines.

“But every one of the team owners we have talked to so far is positive about reducing engine costs,” he explained.

Little played a major part in the introduction of the 85 per cent ethanol fuel, which is known as E85, to this year’s Championship.

His approach to tasks such as increasing engine life will be to present in-depth research to teams in a timely manner, similar to the way the investigation into E85 was undertaken.

“It seems to take a long time to get decisions (from a technical aspect of the Championship) so part of my role will be gathering the information and being able to publicise it clearly and concisely to team owners and board members so they can make decisions,” he said.

Little believes part of his role will be to make racing “easier”.

“Often if it’s easier, it’s cheaper,” he explained.

“One of the goals will be just to make the technical department work in a far more streamlined fashion.

“It’s been reactive in the past; waiting for something to happen and then react with a new rule to fix a problem.

“I would like to change that process so we are proactive so we are not setting rules based on an incident.”

Little, who will start his new role in February, acknowledges the car industry both in Australia and overseas is experiencing extremely tough economical times.

He said V8 Supercars must ensure it continues to run an entertaining, affordable Championship and he was keen to play a part in that.

“I’ve had such a huge association with V8 Supercars and I just want to see it move forward, to keep employing people and see it grow,” he emphasised.

Little addressed a possible perception of bias within the V8 Supercar fraternity, given his recent employment with TeamVodafone.

And Cameron Levick worked with Vodafone prior to his tenure as V8 Supercars Chief Executive Officer.

“I’m sure there will be people who will think that Roland (TeamVodafone Principle Roland Dane) has got his people in positions of power with Cameron and myself, but I can assure you we’ve had that talk and we’re Mr Switzerlands,” he said.

“I am not aligned to one manufacturer or team.”

Re: V8 Supercars News & Results 2009 - A New Era Is About To Begin!

Names Merged For Surfers Event

V8 Supercars Australia
17 February 2009
www.v8supercars.com.au

The V8 Supercars’ annual Gold Coast event has had a name change to reflect the addition of A1GP to the bill.

While the V8 Supercars has previously shared the Surfers Paradise street circuit with the Indy cars, the withdrawal of the open-wheeler category meant the event formerly known as the Gold Coast Indy 300 needed a name change.

Now known as the SuperGP, the event takes place this year from October 22-25.

There is a raft of changes for the V8 Supercars at the event besides a name change, including a change of race format.

There will be one 200-kilometre race taking place on both the Saturday and Sunday and V8 Supercars will use the main pit area because of the need to refuel in the longer races with the introduction this season of an 85 per cent ethanol blend of fuel.

V8 Supercar teams will also be given the choice to use the current control tyre or a softer, quicker tyre, which has a shorter life span.

Queensland Sport Minister Judy Spence said the SuperGP will provide fans with the best of both worlds.

“(There will be) 22 countries racing for glory in the A1GP event while V8 Supercar teams battle it out in an event which has traditionally had a huge influence on their Championship outcome,” she said.

“This year’s event will offer so many things that are fresh and we look forward to a new-look off-track calendar of events being rolled out over the coming months.”

SuperGP Chairman, Terry Mackenroth, said the name was a fitting one for the event, which he claimed will be one of the crown jewels of world motorsport.

“Heading into our 19th year, the Gold Coast event is regarded as one of the premier motorsport events in the world and with the inclusion of A1GP cars for the first time alongside our own homegrown V8 Supercars, we’re exceptionally excited about presenting another world class street race,” he said.

“This event will have an international flavour more than at any other time in its history and we want to take advantage of that and create an experience which will be hard to forget.”

SuperGP General Manager, Greg Hooton, said the new look of the event had provided enormous interest from fans and the corporate sector.

“I think the event is going to offer so much more than it ever has before as we really head into a new era,” he said.

“It is no secret that the world is in tough economic times, but we are having positive negotiations with corporate partners at all levels, including naming rights, and we are confident of being able to continually roll out positive news over the next few months.

“Our team is working around the clock to ensure this year’s SuperGP will be our best event yet.”

Tickets for this year’s event will officially go on sale on March 23 through Ticketek on 1300 303 103 and through the event’s new website www.SuperGP.com

Enduro In Need Of Improvement

V8 Supercars Australia
3 February 2009
www.v8supercars.com.au

Organisers of the Phillip Island Circuit have recognised the need to improve on V8 Supercars' 500 kilometre enduro race over the next 10 years.

Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit Managing Director, Fergus Cameron, believes the race is no longer regarded as the category's second best race after the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, but he said plans are on the drawing board to address that situation.

“The 500 in recent years as a race in terms of importance has gone backwards, I think, and there's quite a lot of rebuilding with that event to get it back to what it used to be,” Cameron said.

Phillip Island hosted the 500km race for the first time last year, and V8 Supercars Australia (VESA) later announced that the event had signed a deal to continue the race there until 2018.

Almost $10 million has been spent on upgrading the track since Linfox bought it in 2004.

These improvements included upgrading existing pit buildings, catering upgrades and the addition of a replica kart track on the site.

Recent improvements include the new 2000-square metre 'expo' building, which was used at the L&H 500 last year as a merchandising area and replaces the costly portable marquees erected for track events once or twice a year.

“A lot of it's associated with looking at temporary infrastructure that comes in here for events two or three times a year and saying ok, let's redirect that recurring expenditure that's going into those sorts of facilities and putting it into better facilities and pay it off over four or five years,” Cameron explained.

One bugbear for fans attending the L&H 500 last year was that empty grandstands set up for the Australian MotoGP were not available for them to use.

Cameron said he has already taken that feedback on board.

“V8 Supercars and VESA recognise what the challenges are going forward and feel we know what the issues are there,” he said.

“Phillip Island has been one of those circuits for the V8 Supercars where the patrons are absolutely used to the idea of coming in their car, parking up against the fence and pulling out the barbecue and that's how they expect Phillip Island to be.

“We are in the process of demonstrating to those fans that there's a lot more they can do and enjoy rather than just doing that.

“Yes, we will be able to introduce stands at some point in time, but we have gone about providing undercover areas such as the big expo building and they really took that on board during the V8 Supercars last year in terms of somewhere to visit.”

The 2009 L&H 500 is scheduled for the weekend of September 11-13.

Holden Re-Allocates V8 Supercars Funding

V8 Supercars Australia
21 January 2009
www.v8supercars.com.au

Holden Motorsport Manager, Simon McNamara, has denied that a re-evaluation of the allocation of money to V8 Supercar teams is a direct result of the economic downturn.

A recent media report stated that only the two Walkinshaw Performance teams along with Supercheap Auto Racing (SCAR) and Team BOC would receive direct funding from Holden.

McNamara refused to comment on which teams would receive financial support, but said all Holden teams “will be supported by Holden in some way, shape or form”.

“We’ve changed some of our business operations based on the fact that we have reviewed teams against key performance indicators,” he said.

“If they didn’t live up to that, we re-evaluated (their support from Holden) and that goes for all aspects of the business including dealerships.

“(The economic climate) is not an underlying factor, but it’s part of it.”

McNamara said Holden allowed teams – including Sprint Gas Racing (SGR), Garry Rogers Motorsport (GRM) and Rod Nash Racing (RNR) – to remove its signage in order to court more sponsors for the 2009 Championship.

“Some of the more established Holden teams – except for teams like HRT (Holden Racing Team), which will definitely have Holden sponsorship on them – we freed up commercial space for them to reignite sponsorship,” he explained.

“Other teams such as Brad Jones Racing (BJR), which are brand new to Holden, we want to keep building the brand for them, but the other guys were free to sell the space.”

McNamara said Holden’s funding for individual teams and each team’s performance was reviewed every year.

Meanwhile, GRM owner, Garry Rogers, believes that his team will survive the tough times ahead.

“We’ll just put our heads down and bums up,” he declared.

“With the bunch of guys I’ve got and our sponsors it would have to be the end of the world before we pulled up stumps.”

Rogers confirmed that GRM’s other major sponsors, including long-time backer Valvoline, are still on board.

“We’re always looking for sponsors; we’ve been doing that for the last 20 years but our backing is pretty solid,” he said.

Team owner, Larry Perkins – who has been involved for more than two decades in the sport – believes times will get tougher, but he wasn’t being too downcast despite not having announced his plans for his two V8 Supercar licences in 2009.

“Any recession affects activities,” he said.

“Especially if the activities are in the non-essential area of life and car racing is hardly at the essential end of the scale.

“But having said that, it doesn’t matter how may recessions you have, life still goes on.

“There are various adjustments that take place and the car racing industry is no different to any other industry and we just need to make those adjustments.”

Perkins’ major sponsor of 2008, Jack Daniel’s, is believed to be on the move to the much-mooted Kelly Racing.

The resolute stance of Rogers and Perkins is common among the V8 Supercar fraternity with the main players believing the category is in a far better position to weather the storm than many of its rival sports.

The Herald Sun recently quoted V8 Supercars Chief Executive Officer Cameron Levick saying the next couple of years would be tough but the category should still be strong.

“That’s the reverse of some other categories and a lot of things are driving that,” he told the newspaper.

"Also, the way we are structured, as a business and as a sport, is that the teams own the series and get a dividend from the series.

“We hope that helps them get through a difficult time.”

Despite the poor economic outlook, V8 Supercars Australia recently announced that a full grid of 30 cars would be on the start-line for the opening round of the 2009 Championship, the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide on March 19-22.

HRT Was Always My Goal: Davison

V8 Supercars Australia
28 January 2009
www.v8supercars.com.au

Holden Racing Team’s newest kid on the block says it has always been a dream of his to drive for the Red Lion’s greatest team.

Will Davison was given a standing ovation from Holden workers at the Red Lion’s Port Melbourne facility when it was confirmed today (Wednesday) that he will be Garth Tander’s new colleague in 2009.

“This is amazing; what an atmosphere… (it’s like) nothing I have experienced before,” he said.

Davison said he was not daunted at the prospect of racing for Holden’s main team.

“It’s very exciting because I feel really well prepared for this opportunity,” he said.

“I’ve worked hard my whole career to get here and I feel like I’ve earned it.

“They’re the benchmark team in Australia and it’s an honour and I’m just looking forward to knuckling down with everyone involved and achieving what I believe I’m definitely capable of.”

The 26-year-old revealed his family connection to Holden went back two generations.

“My grandfather, Lex Davison, actually drove the first motorsport event Holden entered, the Monte Carlo Rally, in 1953,” he said.

“Holden is really the heart and soul of my family so it is really good to be back home.

“Holden Racing Team, it’s the team I dreamt to drive for my whole life and I just can’t wait to get stuck into it.”

Tander, who won the V8 Supercar Championship in 2007, said Davison’s signing will reinvigorate HRT.

“Because when you look at it last year, Mark (Skaife) had been with the team for a considerable period of time and I’d been with the WP guys three or four years so I guess looking at the car … he’s entering the phase of his career where he’s really in control of what he’s doing.”

Tander had no concerns about Davison upstaging him and said the only goal was for HRT to become the all-conquering powerhouse it used to be.

“If he finishes first in the first race and I finish second I won’t be concerned at all,” he smiled.

Davison said he was “massively hungry” for a Championship and hoped to bring a young attitude to the team.

“Nothing else in my life really interferes with my job,” he stated.

And Davison is relishing the chance to work with Tander.

“I can’t wait,” Davison enthused.

“He’s a guy I’ve looked up to for the last couple of years and you actually benchmark yourself against the best.

“We want to work well together for the whole the team to move forward and that’s the key.

“Although we’re going to be competing against each other very hard, we’re going to work together really well to make sure we’re one-two and then we’ll sort out who’s one!”

Maybe to liven up the enduro event at Phillip Island they can run the middle 1/3 of the race in reverse? And just to be sure of a spectacle, once you hit 1/3 race didstance you stop and go in reverse straight away so you need to avoid the slower cars still going forwards. God help you if you have some cars a few laps down

Naah, your mistaken, I am a full blooded Aussie. Though I do enjoy NASCAR (curse Ambrose for switching to Toyota) and go Chevy! But I grew up in the land of Oz, Group C touring cars, V8 Supercars, Bathurst, F1, 500cc motorbikes, WRC, British Touring Cars, Le Mans etc. Just love motorsport.

If things go well it is back to Oz late next year, otherwise maybe a bit later on.

New FG Experiences Teething Problems

V8 Supercars Australia
6 March 2009
www.v8supercars.com

Ford Performance Racing Team Manager Tim Edwards said a recent shakedown at Winton Raceway for the new FG Falcon served its purpose, but admitted not everything went to plan.

He indicated that Steven Richards’ new car was back in the transporter before completing its scheduled run.

Edwards said there was a problem with the #6 Falcon’s oil tank at the shakedown held on Tuesday, March 3, but said the day was far from a failure.

“There were a couple of little problems with the oil tank, but there were absolutely no major issues at all,” he explained.

“It was only that we didn’t have a fabricator or welder to make the changes so he (Richo) only did about 15 of his 20 laps.

“We chose not to do the other laps because we were getting oil spikes on some of the corners and we were using the new engines for Adelaide so we didn’t want to risk it.”

The leading Ford V8 Supercar teams will race the brand new FG Falcon for the first time at the Clipsal 500 from March 19-22.

Besides the 20-lap shakedown permitted for new cars under V8 Supercars Australia rules, the official test day – on Monday March 9 at Winton for Victorian-based teams and Wednesday March 11 at Ipswich for Queensland-based teams – is the only other track time for the new FGs before Clipsal.

Edwards said the shakedown served its purpose because it meant the team would not turn up to the Victorian test day behind the eight ball.

“It would have been disappointing if it had have happened at the test day,” he admitted.

“When you build a new car with 2000 new parts, if you think every one of those are going to be perfect… it just isn’t going to happen.

“The Queensland teams like Triple Eight are doing the same (car shake downs) today (Friday) and if they have zero problems with their cars then they are far superior than us.”

Edwards said with the oil glitch under control, Richards and teammate Mark ‘Frosty’ Winterbottom can now “hit the track with anger” on Monday.

“Both of our drivers were ecstatic with their cars at the shakedown,” he said.

“Frosty managed to do his 20 laps and he didn’t have a problem.”

Edwards said the test day would allow the team to better understand some changes to last year’s components, including the fuel system with the introduction of E85 ethanol fuel.

“The engineers have had three or four months of thinking time so they have a raft of things they want to try to understand the car a little bit more,” he said.

“There’s a lot of stuff for us to get through on Monday.”

Meanwhile, Kelly Racing Commercial Manager Nick Ryan said a shakedown held this week for Todd and Rick Kelly’s new VE Commodores went “unbelievably well”.

“The general feedback from the shakedown was there are absolutely no major changes needed to the car, only minor tweaks,” he said.

“This is incredibly pleasing, considering the short amount of time it has taken to turn around the cars.

“The cars were cutting quick times from the outset and the team’s really ecstatic with their position; it reflects on the great work that everyone has done in the offseason.”

The two V8 Supercar test days are open to the public.
V8 Supercars urges each person who walks through the gate at Winton to pay a $10 donation (children under 12 are free) with all gate takings going to the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal.

Fans are urged to pay an entry fee of $10 per person (children under 12 are free) at the Queensland Raceway test day, with all gate takings going to the North Queensland Flood Appeal.

Punters are welcome to donate more than the $10 entry if they wish to help the respective appeals.

Driver and sponsor changes have been done and V8 Supercar teams are now settling down for the start of the 2009 Championship in Adelaide this weekend.

But that doesn’t mean the Clipsal 500, which runs from March 19-22, is going to be easy for anyone.

Turn eight has been changed at the Adelaide Park track to force drivers to slow down, compulsory pit stops have been abolished, most Ford drivers have a new FG Falcon to drive and the Top 10 Shootout is back, but the change that has got everyone talking is the introduction of the E85 fuel.

The Toll Holden Racing Team (HRT) Commodores feature logos promoting E85 – which is a blend of 85 per cent ethanol and 15 per cent fossil fuel – along with Ecoline, General Motors’ brand of vehicles that use alternative fuels or fuel saving technology.

“The fuel changes are going to be a big talking point for the Clipsal races, while the E85 program is important to Holden,” HRT driver Garth Tander said.

“Based on what we’ve been seeing, the fuel windows will be a lot tighter and that’s going to make the races far more interesting; it’ll also give us an indication of who’s on top of their E85 program more than others.”

Ford rival Steve Richards from Ford Performance Racing noticed only one real difference at a recent test day.

“With the ethanol, the only difference I could notice was we weren’t reaching the limiter at the same spots as last year,” he explained.

“That could be caused by something else, but if it is the fuel it would be quite a significant change.”

Richards believes a slight economy improvement this year could offer teams an advantage of up to four seconds during fuel stops, which could convert to race wins.

Holden will feature rookies in two of its Commodores this year, with Tim Slade lining up for Supercheap Auto Racing and David Reynolds for Bundaberg Red Racing.

Jack Perkins (Kelly Racing), Alex Davison (Stone Brothers Racing) and Jason Bargwanna (Sprint Gas Racing) all re-enter the category in 2008 while a number of drivers switched teams at the end of 2008.

One of those is new HRT driver Will Davison, who is confident of a successful 2009 after defecting from Jim Beam Racing.

“I’m still going to be learning in the first part of the year, but I think we should hit the ground running pretty well,” he said.

“We’re only going to get stronger the further we get into the Championship, whether we win Clipsal or not.”

Davison said it was a big ask, but he believes he could take out the Clipsal 500.

“The team’s more than capable of winning Clipsal,” he said.

“Whether I can get that done or not I don’t know but who knows?

“I’d love to think we’re going to be very competitive there; I think we will be.”

The Clipsal 500 played host to 291,000 spectators in 2008 and won the Qantas Australian Tourism Award for the best Major Festival and Event for the fourth time.

Nightly concerts will take place at this year’s event, with the Living End playing on Thursday, The Presets and Pete Murray on Friday, Leigh Kernaghan on Saturday and Wolfmother on Sunday.

V8 Supercars Chief Executive Officer, Cameron Levick, said the Clipsal 500 was a world-class event that few others could match.

“For more than a decade Adelaide has set the mark for any event, sporting or otherwise, in this country,” Levick enthused.

“We are delighted to be partners in this great event.

“On the track, Adelaide is one of the most testing circuits for our drivers who show incredible courage battling searing heat and intense racing for more than two hours each day.

“Adelaide has in the past thrown up some of the best, edge of your seat, racing in the world.”

TeamVodafone is running a polling to find out whether fans would like to add a bit of oomph – or oink – to their Fords.

The 2008 Championship team lost sponsorship from Ford at the end of last year, and with no obligations to run a Blue Oval badge on the front grille it teamed up with new sponsor Hog’s Breath Café to replace it.

The café’s mascot, Hogster, replaces the Ford badge on the cars of 2008 Champion Jamie Whincup and teammate Craig Lowndes and if demand is high enough, fans will be able to do it too.

TeamVodafone Commercial Operations Manager, Peter Jamieson, explained that the poll was a way for the team to canvass whether there was enough interest for a larger production run of the Hogster badges.

“We’ve had a lot of inquiries from fans – probably 40 or 50 so far – asking us to buy the badges,” he said.

“If it sounds like there’s an interest for us make them on a permanent basis we will.”

Jamieson said only 10 Hogster grille badges had been produced so far, and they were made only for the Whincup and Lowndes cars.

If the badges are produced, they would certainly make any Ford road car stand out and they may also be used in protest by TeamVodafone fans who are angry that Ford no longer supports their favourite V8 Supercar team.

The poll requires a yes or no vote to the question: “would you be interested in buying a Hogster badge similar to the one in the TeamVodafone grilles?”

It can be found on the team’s website www.teamvodafone.com and as of this afternoon, just over 70 per cent of people who voted said they would buy one.

While the Hogster grille badges will not be available at the Clipsal 500 this weekend, TeamVodafone has produced a whole new range of merchandise for 2009, which will be available at the circuit.

V8 Supercars Round 1 Results,
Qualifying & Race 1
Clipsal 500, Adelaide

TeamVodafone's Jamie Whincup virtually dominated the opening race of the 2009 V8 Supercar Championship, the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide.

Whincup fluffed the start from pole position, allowing his teammate, Craig Lowndes, into the early lead, but that was his only mistake as he fought his way back from fifth to take an easy victory in his Hogster-badged FG Falcon.

“It has been an amazing day for TeamVodafone…. the car was fantastic,” Whincup said.

“I stayed out of trouble. There was a fair bit of emotion when you come into the year with a new car and not knowing what to expect, and with extra pressure carrying the number one on the car and the expectations of the team and sponsors.

“I feel quite relieved that we have got the year off to a good start.”

Whincup described his start as a 'taxi driver's start'.

“There is a brand new surface down (on the starting grid) and there is massive grip; I just bogged it down and that was the end of it,” he said.

For the majority of the 78-lap race it looked like it may be a one-two for TeamVodafone as Lowndes followed his teammate's rear bumper, but steering failure, which saw him spin twice on his own car's leaking power-steering fluid on lap 74 left him in 19th place at the end of the race.

Holden Racing Team's Garth Tander was also set for a podium finish when his VE Commodore also suffered power-steering failure on lap 67.

“Something felt weird after the (pit) stop, then it felt fine for 30 laps. Then I saw smoke in the mirrors and the steering came and went as the oil drained and that was that,” Tander said.

Garry Rogers Motorsport's Lee Holdsworth eventually came through for second place in his VE Commodore ahead of Tander's new HRT teammate, Will Davision, who salvaged the final podium despite spinning late in the race on fluid that was most likely left by Tander's car.

The race was marred early by a major crash from Holdsworth's teammate, Michael Caruso, after Sprint Gas Racing's Greg Murphy punted him into a concrete wall, destroying the former's VE Commodore (see separate article).

Later in the race Ford drivers Shane Van Gisbergen and Mark Winterbottom came together with Frosty being forced to the pits to replace a damaged front spoiler on his FPR Falcon.

The race had a high attrition rate with other drivers also having 'offs' throughout the race, but it wasn't only the cars that suffered in the humid Adelaide weather as many drivers were feeling the effects of the heat at the race's conclusion.

Jim Beam Racing's James Courtney headed to the pits on lap 62 to try to get his cool suit working, which failed early in the race. He actually returned to the circuit and was classified 20th.

His team boss Adrian Burgess said Courtney was “fine”.

“The cool suit froze at the start of the race, which stopped it from properly working. (It was pumping warm water through the suit, raising his body temp),” he said.

“We talked to him every lap of the race to make sure he was okay.

“A couple of errors crept in so we brought him in and pulled the windows out to see if that would help.

“It didn't, so we pulled him in because James' safety is paramount."

Other drivers to pull up dehydrated included Stone Brothers Racing's Van Gisbergen and Alex Davison, though team boss Ross Stone stressed they would both be okay for tomorrow's (Sunday) 78-lap race, which is scheduled to start at 2.35pm tomorrow.

Jack Daniel's Racing driver Rick Kelly was another to suffer from dehydration.

Most of the drivers in pitlane were suffering with blisters on their feet from the hot firewalls in their cars.

V8 Supercars Round 1 Results,
Race 2 & Championship Points
Clipsal 500, Adelaide

V8 Supercars Australia
22 March 2009
www.v8supercars.com.au

TeamVodafone’s Jamie Whincup has had a stellar start to the 2009 V8 Supercar Championship, picking up maximum points during the first event, the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide.

The Reigning Champion picked up the maximum of 150 points for both Race One and Two, crossing the finish line of the latter ahead of Holden Racing Team’s Will Davison and Garth Tander this afternoon (Sunday).

Whincup also won Race One yesterday (Saturday) in his new FG Falcon, which his team has branded a ‘Hogster’.

Davison, who debuted with HRT this weekend and was once a housemate of Whincup, is sitting second in the Championship with 129 points.

Whincup described the start of the race as “crazy” with oil and dust covering the track and drivers setting a “massive” pace.

“We were doing mid to low 22s which is fairly crazy pace,” he said.

“(It was) much cooler today; I feel much better and at the end of the race it was a great battle with Will.

“A little bit of me wanted to give him a win on debut but I quickly snapped out of that.”

Davison was satisfied with second, attributing his “dream debut” to the team.

“It’s been a great month leading up to here and it has probably exceeded my expectations,” he confessed.

“I’m absolutely thrilled, I could not be happier with how this weekend has gone.”

Tander had scooped the lead off Whincup on lap one of the race, but succumbed to the reigning champion on lap 14.

Davison also got passed his teammate soon after Tander returned to the track after a pitstop on cold tyres.

Tander said he was far from concerned that he would be racing in the tried-and-tested VE Commodore this year while Whincup’s team still had a way to go before it had fully got a handle of its new FG Falcons.

“I think our team proved we are the benchmark Holden team today and there were no Fords ahead of us, just a couple of pigs,” he laughed.

Whincup’s teammate Craig Lowndes shared the first row of the grid this afternoon, but bogged his car down at the race start to fall back to 10th place.

Lowndes clawed his way back to finish fourth, but not before breaking Whincup’s 2008 lap record around the Adelaide street circuit on laps 47 and 48.

There were three Safety Car periods during the 78-lap race, including one on lap two following an incident involving the Dodo Racing Commodore of Jack Perkins and the Team IntaRacing Falcon of Marcus Marshall.

Perkins appeared to get tapped from behind before he clashed with Marshall and then stopped his heavily damaged car after Turn Eight.

Whincup now leads former V8 Supercar Champ Marcos Ambrose in terms of Clipsal 500 event wins.

“Marcos Ambrose, I regard as one of the best drivers we’ve seen, so to get one step better than him is a proud moment,” Whincup said.

Will Davison is the one who shocked me. I didn't expect him to do so well so early in the season, especially in his new HRT.

BTW, I have started a GMI V8 Supercars tipping comp!

I noticed the other day OzTips did the V8's, so I started one yesterday.

Anyone is free to join! No prizes. It's just for the fun of it!
