Lowndes Leads All Ford Front Row For Super Cheap Auto Bathurst 1000

Release Date: 08/10/2005
www.v8supercars.com.au

Craig Lowndes heads an all-Ford front row of the grid for tomorrow’s Super Cheap Auto 1000 at Mount Panorama, Bathurst.

The Team Betta Electrical Ford driver continued his dominant form to grab pole position after being fastest in practice and qualifying, then recording a 2:08.59 in the Top-10 Shootout at Mount Panorama this afternoon.

The 30-year-old, who won Bathurst nine years ago, edged out V8 Supercar Champion Marcos Ambrose (Stone Brothers Racing Ford) by .025 of a second.

Defending Bathurst champion Greg Murphy (Super Cheap Auto Holden) improved to third alongside Holden Racing Team’s Mark Skaife.

Lowndes, delighted with his team’s form, said a delay after Russell Ingall left the track with a mechanical failure helped his cause. The resulting delay after Ingall’s gears locked and he went into the sand at the end of the downhill mountain chase gave the track time to dry after light rain earlier in the day.

“We were lucky Russell put it in the gravel and allowed the track to dry more,’’ Lowndes said. “We are delighted as a team. The car is basically the same as it rolled out of the transporter.

“Conditions did not allow any records but the car was very good across the top of the mountain. Being fast in qualifying and racing 1000km are totally different things. The last half of the season has been the best for me in the last five years and I’m not prepared to let that go.’’

Lowndes, after trailing pace-setting Ambrose through the first sector, was a full half a second quicker than the next best across the mountain.

However Ambrose said he was more than happy with his performance.

“Craig was unbelievable today,’’ Ambrose said. “We choose to be a little conservative across the top. We didn’t expect to be on the top row. I would have been happy with a top six.’’

Murphy, the lap record holder with his brilliant 2:06.84 two years ago, was pleased with improvements to his car but disappointed with his effort in the shootout.

“It was a very average performance. I was too aggressive on top of the mountain and ran wide at the Chase so it was very disappointing,’’ Murphy said. “The track was fine. I couldn’t fault it. It was the nut behind the wheel.’’

Murphy said his team had made real gains in this morning’s practice where he was the fastest with a 2:07.87.

“The car was not bad at all this morning. Tomorrow will tell the story though.’’

Ingall is the only driver to face a testing time in tomorrow’s early practice after his gear lock-up with no other significant casualties today.

There are six Holdens in the top 10 on the grid which includes all the main pre-race favourites.

Garth Tander, stepping up to the No 1 driver with Rick Kelly still suffering from a virus, produced the fifth fastest time for the HSV Dealer Holden beside Steven Richards (Perkins Holden).

Jason Richards (Dodo Racing Holden) is seventh alongside Glenn Seton (Westport Ford) with the final spots on the top-10 filled by veteran and seven-time Bathurst champion Jim Richards in the second Holden Racing Team car and Ingall.

The 161-lap, 1000km Super Cheap Auto 1000 gets underway at 10am tomorrow.

V8 Supercars Round 10 Results: Bathurst 1000 'The Great Race'

Release Date: 09/10/2005
www.v8supercars.com.au

V8 Supercar racing’s most decorated driver Mark Skaife won his fifth Bathurst title and Todd Kelly his maiden in a Super Cheap Auto 1000 that will go down in history as one of the great classics.

The race will be recorded as another feast of unforgettable moments including a loose tyre that crashed through the windscreen of Craig Lowndes and a controversial penalty against current Champion Marcos Ambrose.

It also now presents a new Championship leader in Ambrose’ team-mate Russell Ingall and up to six contenders that can still win the 2005 V8 Supercar Championship Series crown.

Skaife had the legs on the Tasman Motorsport combination of Jason Richards and Jamie Whincup and the Triple Eight Ford team of Steve Ellery and Adam Macrow after a final 11-lap charge following the seventh safety car period of the day.

But an incident on lap 144 when Ambrose and Greg Murphy came together and ended their own races was by far the most spectacular. Apart from the carnage that involved around a dozen cars there was also a subsequent clash between the two drivers on the track.

That shouldn’t take away from the victory of Skaife and Kelly. It reconfirmed that Skaife is still amongst the very best in the business after a lean few years by his own lofty standards.

“It’s the best I’ve driven here today of all of my Bathurst drives. It’s my best win,” Skaife said.

“To win a fifth Bathurst and Holden win seven in a row is special. We were very conservative early in the day and didn’t fight when Murphy went past us early on. The car was going well and got better as the race went on.’’

Skaife set a new race lap record of 2:08.65 in the third driving stint, when he made a key break on Murphy who was forced into the pits early for fuel.

The Tasman Motorsport Holden pair worked their way through the field with Whincup claiming the lead for Richards to take over into the final stint. Skaife had too much speed though, re-taking the lead on lap 140 which he did not relinquish.

But the scene that captured the emotion of the race was dominated by Ambrose and Murphy. The aftermath of the crash was overshadowed by the ensuing clash between drivers. And neither gave any quarter after they had cooled down.

“It has destroyed our race, destroyed a lot of others too and now it might have destroyed my championship, who knows. He had the chance to avoid an accident and he did not. I guess we are going to have a great crack for the title,” Ambrose said.

With both guns blazing, Murphy fired straight back.

“We were racing for it and I expected he would do a proper job and give me racing room to go around the corner together,” Murphy said.

“He decided that I should have to give way and that is what happened. He pegged me into the wall and I catapulted him around … bloody stupid if you ask me.

“Marcos, as always, thinks he is in the right and thinks everyone should give way to him. I'm not going to play that game. He has got an ego problem, we all know about it and it's reared its ugly head again today.

“I'm pretty angry. I don't want to have to put up with him. He can take what I said and leave, I won't be crying about it."

Ambrose was also penalised for his co-driver not wearing a fireproof balaclava and then discovered he was also not wearing one which meant he had to come in again and don one. But the crash meant the drama had no ultimate impact on his result.

Lowndes incredible incident when the wheel of Paul Dumbrell’s Commodore smashed into his windscreen provided yet another Bathurst moment that will live on for years.

Lowndes came in and the team was unable to replace the screen, meaning he and co-driver Yvan Muller, the race favourites, spent most of the race without a front or rear windscreen as the rules require both to be removed to complete the race. Unbelievably they finished 15th.

Veteran Jim Richard’s 34th assault on the race ended prematurely when his young co-driver James Courtney, making his Bathurst debut, ended the second Holden Racing Team’s race on lap eight with a mistake going across the top of the mountain.

Courtney made no excuses about the mistake.

“I was running a lot quicker than the pack I was in and probably going too hard,” Courtney said.

“There was a problem with the steering. All of the lights on the dash were going crazy. I was trying to fix that problem as I was going around, probably not thinking too much about what I should have been doing.”

Steven Richards’ Championship hopes were in tatters when a broken rear axle that resulted in the Lowndes’ incident finished their race.

But Skaife and Kelly made Holden’s pain all the less.

Bathurst 24 Hour Too Good To Let Go: Brock

Peter McKay 11/10/05
www.drive.com.au

Peter Brock has decided to put his mind to resuscitating the Bathurst 24 Hour, a race the touring car legend believes "should be restored to the calendar". "We can't let it go - it's such a fantastic event," Brock declared.

The Bathurst 24 Hour was the brainchild of Queensland businessman Ross Palmer. It ran for two years, 2002-03, and was praised by local and international teams and drivers. But Palmer acknowledged he lost money on the event and despite the efforts of others, including Bathurst Council, to keep the idea alive, the race did not proceed in 2004.

Brock, who won in 2003 in a Monaro, remains a true believer and says local motor sport needs a counter-attraction to V8 supercars. He believes the race could grow into one of the world's great events.

Brock says he is sure Bathurst Council wants to see the Mount Panorama circuit used more than one weekend a year, particularly after the national and state governments each tipped in $10 million for a recent major refurbishment. "I'm sure there are enough influential people who love motor sport who we can encourage to get behind bringing back the Bathurst 24 Hour," said Brock.

David Richards, owner of the huge Prodrive motor sport organisation who visited Mount Panorama for the first time at the weekend, is also very supportive. "The new pit area is as good as many formula one circuits," enthused Richards, the former boss of the BAR F1 team and owner of the FPR Ford V8 supercar team.

Pole Winning Murphy Says He Has Nothing To Lose At Gold Coast
Indy 300 Gillette V8 Supercar Challenge

Release Date: 21/10/2005
www.v8supercars.com.au

Greg Murphy has nothing to lose at this weekend’s Gillette V8 Supercar Challenge on the Gold Coast and will launch an all out assault on the car-crunching Surfers Paradise track after snatching his first Pole position since the start of last season.

Murphy took Pole by more than half a second from V8 Supercar Championship Series contender Todd Kelly and says after a troubled season he is able to put everything on the line for a win.

The Kiwi ended his run at a third consecutive Bathurst win two weeks ago after a controversial crash with Marcos Ambrose, who qualified fourth on the Gold Coast, but that was now history and easily forgotten if he wins this round.

“That was great, it is good to finally get one,” Murphy said. “I knew the car was fast enough, and I knew if I didn’t make any errors we’d be there or thereabouts, and thankfully the errors I did make weren’t too big. I am pretty satisfied with that.

“The 2005 season has gone for us, we need to win races now and start thinking about 2006.”

Kelly moved into Championship contention when Murphy and Ambrose crashed out of the Super Cheap Auto 1000 at Bathurst and says to start on the front row is the perfect way to hunt down Series leader Russell Ingall.

“I’ve got to win races and rounds now, it is as simple as that,” Kelly said after the Shootout.” I need every point I can get from now if I am going to win the Championship. I can’t afford to be conservative at all.

“The front row is where you want to start, the only problem is that Murphy starts so well. I was pretty unhappy with that whole lap, I was a bit of a boofhead there, when the sun came out I just didn’t warm the tyres up enough.

“I think the car has a lot more speed than I showed then, so if we can get away well and stay out of trouble we can go out there and have a crack at winning.”

Kelly’s Holden Racing Team team-mate Mark Skaife, who will start third on the grid, was likewise unimpressed with his lap, but said that tomorrow will be an open book for these cars.

“It wasn’t the best lap I’ve ever done, but it was not a bad lap either,” he added. “When it is like that you are a pioneer at every corner, you really don’t know how much grip you’ve got.

“There’s a lot of other variable this weekend, the track is tough but now we’ve got two speed limits in pitlane which is going to be interesting. Pit entry and exit is going to more important than ever before.”

Ambrose will start the first race tomorrow alongside Skaife, and he echoed those thoughts as he tried to hunt down the Championship lead he lost at the last round. Ambrose tagged the wall lightly during his run, labelling the error as a personal stuff-up.

“There’s no much to say really, just a bit of a stuff-up really,” Ambrose said of the incident that knocked the driver’s side mirror of the car. “I just wasn’t 100% sure of the grip going into the corner, and I just touched the wall. It cost me maybe 1/10th of a second, but I certainly didn’t have enough speed to catch Greg today.

“But tomorrow is a new story, there’s no doubt people will run out of brakes, it is just a matter of when. If it is hot, there is no doubt brakes the story of the race will be brakes… and we had the best brakes we’ve ever had on the car at Bathurst, so I feel pretty good about them.

“[The second pitlane speed limit] will be a tough one to enforce, and it could change the Championship. Someone is going to get done for sure… you spend about 99% of your time in that bit looking at the dash and 1% making sure you are still on the track.”

Steve Richards was fourth quickest in the Shootout, lamenting a twitchy rear end as he battled the twisty bits near the end of his lap.

“You need to use as much of the track as possible here without shortening the car, but that we just lacked a little bit of rear grip in the closing stages,” Richards said of his Shootout run.

Craig Lowndes was sixth fastest and lucky to make the Shootout at all after hitting the wall during qualifying, while Championship leader Russell Ingall was seventh after steady run through the Shootout.

The final three spots in the Top 10 went to Steve Ellery, Cameron McConville and Jason Richards.

The first of three races for the weekend starts today at 3:35pm.

Re: V8 Supercars News & Results 2005

Murphy Wins Again & Ingall Gains As Rivals Crash Out
At Gold Coast Indy 300 Gillette V8 Supercar Challenge

Release Date: 22/10/2005
www.v8supercars.com.au

Marcos Ambrose’ pain quickly became his Stone Brothers’ Racing team-mate Russell Ingall’s massive gain as the Championship Series turned on its’ ear after the first of three races in the Gillette V8 Supercar Challenge at Surfers Paradise today.

Ambrose failed to finish race one with what was a clutch breakdown, pulling off the side of the tight track after just one lap. In a further drama Holden Racing Team’s Todd Kelly also failed to finished with a massive engine failure.

Both remained second and third in the Championship but Ingall now has a handy 60-point lead with his fourth place today.

The out of Series contention Greg Murphy continued his love of the Gold Coast track by winning today’s first race while Craig Lowndes and Mark Skaife, still slim Championship hopes, were second and third.

Another former Championship contender, Castrol Perkins’ Steven Richards, finished last with car problems moving him from fourth back into sixth position in the Championship race.

For Ingall, it was plain sailing to a handy Championship lead by maintaining his fourth position during the race without trying to challenge the leaders. He finished 10 seconds behind Murphy.

“Our whole approach to the last three rounds is to react on what is happening to the contenders,” Ingall said.

“When I saw, Marcos and Todd out and Richo in trouble I just took it back a peg and made sure we settled into a rhythm in fourth.

“I am not interested in spraying cheap champagne on the podium this weekend, we have our eye on the main prize.”

Ambrose lamented what could have been from fourth on the grid.

“That was pretty much a crash and burn for the championship, but we have to keep giving it our best shot,” Ambrose said.

“There are still eight races left in the championship and, as we saw today, anything can happen. “It was just one of those deals. Some days are good and some aren’t.”

Murphy’s second win of the year was gratifying given his up and down season. He also won this event last year and is well on track for another famous Gillette surfboard.

“It might have looked boring to you, but I can assure you it was hard work out there,” Murphy said.

“It started to hurt about six laps from the end, it was like there was some heat soak or something and it felt like the temperature went up by about 5 degrees.

“We’ve had to do a lot of work since we changed over engines and it has started to work. This weekend we have taken a few punts we wouldn’t have done if we’d been in a better Championship position and they seem to have worked.”

Murphy said the day was made harder by the amount of fireproof underwear the drivers had to wear now, but that without being able to change that he now had to concentrate on re-hydrating before tomorrow’s two 22-lap races.

“There is no doubt they’ll be easier, but they’ll still be really tough. In between races we’ll just have to try to do as little as possible and drink as much as possible.”

Lowndes said once he survived the first lap, he settled into a pace that wasn’t quick enough to challenge Skaife.

“I stayed out of it in the first chicane, Richo [Steve Richards] had a blinder and with Skaife we were three wide going into the chicane, so I had a look and around me and decided to stay out of it.

“At the end there I was going to be third unless one of them made a mistake, and Mark was nice enough to help me out. We had enough speed to stay ahead of Russell, but not enough to catch and put pressure on Mark.

“To be honest, the car was better than I was today. It was really tough out there, I can’t remember a tougher race.”

V8 Supercars Round 11 Results: Gold Coast Indy 300
Gillette V8 Supercar Challenge

Release Date: 23/10/2005
www.v8supercars.com.au

The V8 Supercar Championship Series is up for grabs for any of five drivers and teams with just two rounds remaining following the aftermath of yet another thriller at today’s Gillette V8 Supercar Championship Series at the Lexmark Indy 300 on the Gold Coast.

A meager 110 points separate Caltex Racing’s Russell Ingall (1610), Pirtek Racing’s Marcos Ambrose (1544), Betta Electrical’s Craig Lowndes (1529), Holden Racing Team’s Mark Skaife (1516) and his team-mate Todd Kelly (1500).

With the Ferodo Triple Challenge at Launceston in Tasmania (November 11-13) and the BigPond Grand Finale at Phillip Island (November 25-27), the Championship is set for a thrilling climax that is virtually certain of coming down to the ultimate event.

The big winner through the streets of Surfers Paradise was Lowndes who moved from fifth to third with his victory in the Gillette V8 Supercar Challenge today. Skaife was third for the event while Super Cheap Auto Racing’s Greg Murphy second.

Ingall and Ambrose remained in their first and second places for the Championship but the field has made up considerable ground after a record crowd of 316,459 watched the Series unfold before them at the exciting and cavernous street circuit.

“The point structure of this Series is very, very good,” Lowndes said.

“I’ve always said that the Championship will really start to fire from this weekend and that’s exactly what has happened. We’ve always thought that we can do it but we still do need better results than Marcos and Russell.

“Having said that, they probably haven’t had great weekend's here. There are six races to go in the Championship and anything can happen.”

For Skaife to be in such contention after a less than stunning start to the season may well prove that the points system is doing the job. He strongly believes that he and Kelly can jump the three Fords in front of them with two rounds to go.

“It’s always such a changeable game with the points we have,” Skaife said.

“It will be very, very interesting from this point in. We have a great package to finish the season and I’m really looking forward to Tasmania and Phillip Island.

“The stage is really set for an incredible finish at two fantastic race tracks.”

And Murphy may well be the wildcard in the pack. He has nothing to lose but the very fact he will no doubt feature at the front of the field will make it all the more interesting.

“We are not going to get in the way of the Championship, it will take care of itself,” Murphy said.

“We are lucky to have a points system that will ensure a tight finish. I’m just going to keep my head down and try to win some races along the way.”

Series leader Ingall was hit with two drive-through penalties in each race today, one for a curb infringement and the other an infringement at entry to pit lane, while Ambrose never recovered from a broken clutch from the first race yesterday. They finished 11th and 24th respectively.

“I guess this is what you would call a day of highs and lows,” said Ingall.

“We got the job done in the first race today and Marcos had dramas so that extended our points lead to something like 94.

“All I had to do in the third race was have a reasonable result and we would have been in a very good position. Things could have certainly finished better for us today, but we still have a 68 point lead with two rounds remaining.

“We just need to ensure we keep our minds on the job and get the best results possible. I have won at both Symmons Plains and Phillip Island before, so it’s not as though I don’t know my way around the places.”

Ambrose was equally circumspect.

“The day started as a bit of disaster when I hit the wall while trying to get past (Paul) Morris in the opening race,” said Ambrose.

“My rear wing was basically pointing straight up and that can never be a good thing. I was starting towards the back again and Russell towards the front in the third race so things did not look that great.

“Then he (Ingall) had his drama and all of a sudden we had a sniff again. It was a pretty weird weekend all round and it would be nice to have a bit of sanity in the last couple of events.”

V8 Supercars Complete The Puzzle For Bahrain

Release Date: 22/10/2005
www.v8supercars.com.au

The Australian V8 Supercar Championship Series was the final piece of the puzzle in the Kingdom of Bahrain’s thirst for world class Motorsport and the ultimate compliment to Formula One, according to Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa who is visiting this weekend’s Gillette V8 Supercar Challenge on the Gold Coast.

Shaikh Salman, a member of the Bahrain Royal Family, and a forward party from Bahrain Television are attending this weekend’s Lexmark Indy 300 on the Gold Coast ahead of the debut of V8 Supercars in Bahrain in November of next years.

“It is a great honour for us to be in Australia with the great hospitality and the kindness of the Australian people who have been so generous to us in the last few days,” Shaikh Salman said.

“We have a brand new facility in Bahrain but building a circuit is one thing and getting great racing is another. We brought Formula One and many other types of Motorsport to Bahrain but getting the Australian V8 Supercars is the final step.

“We wanted a number of things in a complete package. What V8 Supercars offer to the fans is exactly what we want to offer to the people of Bahrain. V8 Supercars do an outstanding job giving to the people.”

The Bahrain round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series will be held at the Bahrain International Circuit from November 22-24. It will be hosted by the King of Bahrain, His Majesty, Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

The event will be held from Wednesday November 22 through Friday November 24 as these days coincide with Bahrain’s public holidays or weekend as it is known in Australia.

It is hoped that the three-race format for the Bahrain event will be broadcast live back into Australia on Thursday and Friday nights.

Re: V8 Supercars News & Results 2005

Courtney Replaces Champion Ambrose In Plum Drive

AAP 31/10/05
www.drive.com.au

Young gun and former Formula One test driver James Courtney will be announced as the driver to replace defending V8 Supercar Champion Marcos Ambrose in the SBR Falcon.

Ford has again snatched a potential champion from under Holden's nose with James Courtney to be confirmed as the replacement for departing two-times V8 Supercar champion Marcos Ambrose.

Courtney's signing to drive for Stone Brothers Racing (SBR) alongside 2005 series leader Russell Ingall ends fevered speculation since Ambrose announced at the start of season he would join the NASCAR series next year.

Nearly every off-contract driver in the V8 Supercar series has been linked to SBR through the year, including high-profile Holden pair Todd Kelly and Steven Richards.

But SBR will announce on Monday it's Courtney, an endurance driver with the Holden Racing Team this year, who'll fill the seat.

It is the third high profile driver snatch Ford has made from Holden in recent years.

Three-time champion Craig Lowndes' switched camps in 2001 while Ingall followed in 2003.

As expected SBR have secured the best available driver for the best seat.

A test driver for Jaguar in the Formula 1 in 2000, Courtney has one of the most impressive resumes of any Australian driver.

A world junior kart champion at 15, Courtney has won the British Formula Ford championship (2000) and Japanese Formula 3 championship (2003) and finished runner up in the British Formula 3 championship (2002).

At 25 he will be a breath of fresh air in the ageing ranks of Supercar drivers.

With obvious driving talent, and poster-boy looks to attract female motorsport fans, Courtney is the ideal driver for the high profile SBR team.

His defection will be a bitter pill for Holden to swallow.

Courtney was on their books for this year's endurance races and would have learned plenty from his mentors at Holden Racing Team (HRT).

Courtney teamed with seven times winner Jim Richards in the 2005 Bathurst 1000 won by their HRT owner Mark Skaife.

Just last week Skaife confirmed a verbal agreement for Courtney to return for endurance drives next year, believing he would continue in the Japan GT Championship.

"We have a verbal agreement for him to continue to drive the long distance races next year," said Skaife on the Gold Coast.

"Nothing is signed but indications are that is what he wants to do.

"I think he has major negotiations in Japan. He wants to continue there and I would think that is a pretty good avenue."

Courtney's switch will also disappoint Holden legend Peter Brock who suggested at Bathurst that Courtney could be the red lion's best chance at winning a V8 championship.

"There is one young kid out there (Courtney)... who could do the job for Holden if they ever got him," Brock said then.

There were suggestions the Courtney deal was already done at that stage but SBR maintains the fine detail of the deal has been rushed through recently.

With bids from another big-money V8 team and multi-national car-makers, SBR did well to secure Courtney.

With one piece of the driver jig-saw in place for 2006, attention turns elsewhere.

The best seat available is undoubtedly alongside Craig Lowndes at the improving Triple Eight team who have not renewed Steve Ellery's contract.

"I hope to be able to sit down with (team manager) Roland (Dane) and have discussions soon," said Lowndes who wants an input into the decision.

"There's very few drivers out there we would like to put in the car, we just have to find the right one."

Of the drivers available, Bathurst runner-ups Jason Richards and Jamie Whincup seem genuine prospects in what would be yet another Holden defection.

Stone Brothers Racing Announce Two Major Coups
For The 2006 V8 Supercar Championship Series

Release Date: 31/10/2005
www.v8supercars.com.au

In a major coup, leading touring V8 Supercar team Stone Brothers Racing (SBR), today announced the signing of one of the world’s most exciting young racing car drivers, James Courtney to their team and the V8 Supercar Championship Series in 2006.

The announcement that Courtney has teamed up with SBR is coupled with news that the team has also secured a co-naming rights sponsor in JELD-WEN, inc; replacing the long and highly successful partnership with Pirtek, and joining Ford and Caltex as the major sponsors of the two-car operation.

The precociously talented James Courtney, 25, has turned his back on a lucrative racing career in Japan to return to Australia and replace current V8 Supercar Champion Marcos Ambrose in the Ford Falcon of Stone Brothers Racing.

JELD-WEN is the world’s leading manufacturer of reliable windows and doors headquartered in Klamath Falls in the USA. Commencing operations in 1960 as a small Oregon millwork plant, JELD-WEN has grown into a global company with more than 150 divisions and more than 20,000 employees worldwide.

JELD-WEN was the only window or door manufacturer to be named 2003 ENERGY STAR “Partner of the Year” by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency with eight JELD-WEN product lines earning the Good Housekeeping Seal.

In Australia, JELD-WEN’s interests include the Stegbar, Corinthian, Airlite and Regency businesses, brands that are well known by Australian builders, homeowners, architects and designers for the supply of a range of quality windows, doors, showerscreens and wardrobes in every state. The sponsorship delivers an unbeatable platform for those brands to develop and strengthen key relationships with customers and suppliers in the building and construction sector.

“It is well known that supporters of the V8 Supercar series are loyal to the sport. This sponsorship gives JELD-WEN an immediate captive audience and will help to make that brand a recognisable entity in our key markets,” said Managing Director for Stegbar Mr Nigel Lapping.

“The V8 Supercar Series is broadcast to a national and international audience and gains wide coverage not only in sporting publications and television programs, but state and national newspapers, magazines and online publications and the exposure this generates for the JELD-WEN brand across a diverse audience makes this sponsorship a sound investment.”

For Courtney timing has proved everything and the signing is a coup for Stone Brothers Racing as he had been courted by many V8 Supercar Championship Series teams plus had international offers on the table.

“This last couple of weeks has been amazing as I had some incredible offers both in Japan and Australia for 2006 onwards so the pressure was really on to decide where I would go. It was only on Thursday that the decision was actually made and the contract signed,” said Courtney, a dual World Karting Champion and Jaguar Formula One test driver.

“Having raced around the world, I’m now really looking forward to racing in my own country. The timing was spot-on; the championship is great, the team is great, the car is great and it certainly ticked all the right boxes for me.

“The offer from both SBR and Ford was one that I simply couldn’t refuse. Like me, Ross and Jimmy Stone are real racers through-and-through and always produce the goods. It’s a whole new era for SBR with a new team sponsor in JELD-WEN, a brand-new car with the BF Falcon and myself as the new driver. I know that together, we can really achieve something.”

“Courtney became a priority signing for the team soon after he made his debut at the Super Cheap Auto 1000 at Bathurst earlier this month. It was during one of the early practice sessions that Jimmy (co-owner Jimmy Stone) and I were keeping a close eye on the lap times of all the drivers. Very early in the first session James’ lap times flashed up and Jimmy and I turned to each other and without saying a word we both knew that James had to be a priority signing for us,” said Stone Brothers Racing boss Ross Stone.

“To run the way he did so early at such a difficult track proved the caliber of driver he is. Marcos is a very hard driver to replace and leaves a great legacy but we believe that James can match his feats in the years to come.”

JELD-WEN has established a strong association with Stone Brothers Racing as a result of subsidiary Stegbar’s sponsorship of Marcos Ambrose and the SBR team over the past four years.

“During this time, we have established and built a relationship with SBR to produce the number one race team and driver on the V8 circuit. From a business perspective for Stegbar, we’ve leveraged the sponsorship strategically across our operations and it has proved to be a winning formula both on and off the track. The announcement of this increased level of sponsorship will play a key role in building awareness for the JELD-WEN brand here in Australia and the Asia Pacific Rim with the V8 Supercar Series delivering a presence every fortnight across these regions,” said Nigel Lapping.

“Like the JELD-WEN business, SBR is a family business that shares a like minded vision focused on winning and they don’t mind pushing the envelope to achieve that. Anyone with a focus on competing and winning would want to be aligned with Ross and Jimmy Stone and we are looking forward to working more closely with them to build on our already successful partnership.”

Lapping said the recruitment of James Courtney fitted perfectly with the company’s plans.

“I met James for the first time this week and I’ve been impressed with his young clean image, his competitive drive, modesty and humility. He is a fresh face ideally suited to launch the JELD-WEN brand in Australia and I am extremely confidant that he has the driving ability, track record and potential to go all the way to the top of the ladder in the series. I’m looking forward to watching the success of this extraordinary young man,” he said.

Equally the partnership with JELD-WEN adds another dimension to Stone Brothers Racing and the Series in that another non-traditional Motorsport company has seen the great value in backing a leading V8 Supercar team.

“Bringing JELD-WEN on board gives the team an entire new dimension, adding to our already strong and successful partnership with Caltex. JELD-WEN is a leading global company that we are very proud to have on board and we look forward to building a fantastic mutual relationship that will span many years to come,” said Ross Stone.

Formula One Ace Mark Webber To Get A Taste
Of V8 Supercars At Tasmanian Ferodo Triple Challenge

Release Date: 02/11/2005
www.v8supercars.com.au

Australian Formula One ace Mark Webber is coming down under for a look at the world’s toughest touring car category, the V8 Supercar Championship Series, at the Tasmanian Ferodo Triple Challenge on Sunday week.

Webber is making a flying visit to Australia and will spend Sunday week (November 13) at the Symmons Plains racetrack along with a host of other celebrities including Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting and former Test and one-day international kind Michael Bevan, who will experience V8 Supercars first hand on Friday.

For the Formula One ace it will also be a chance to catch up with many of his former racing colleagues that include former Jaguar Formula One test driver and open wheel champion James Courtney who has just signed to drive V8 Supercars with Stone Brothers Racing, replacing hometown hero Marcos Ambrose.

The BMW Williams driver is a fan of V8 Supercars when he gets the chance to watch on television in Europe.

“What’s absolutely clear whenever you watch V8 Supercars is just how competitive it is,” Webber says.

“Of course, the Ford versus Holden rivalry is part of Australian motoring and sport folklore and this has played an important role in helping to shape and ensure the continuing success of the category.

“I haven’t been to Symmon’s Plains for 10 years - the last time was when I raced Formula Fords there in ’95 but of course I’ve been to Tasmania much more recently - in 2003 when we organized the Mark Webber Challenge.

“I can’t remember much about Symmons but I’m sure it’ll all come flooding back when I get there! Tasmania is one of the most untapped places in the world - that’s what makes it so special. I’m absolutely fascinated by its remoteness and rugged coastlines and generally how quiet and spacious it is. I really enjoy going there.

“The Australian V8 Supercars have certainly proved popular overseas in recent years, especially in countries that don’t have a deep-seated motorsport heritage and tradition (such as China and Bahrain).

“There, I’m sure the fans find it much easier to identity with the kind of the cars they may see on the road and own themselves, rather than purpose-built open-wheelers.

“My schedule makes it very difficult to follow what’s going on in any other category but I am looking forward to having a relaxing week watching everyone else do the work on-track! I’m sure the racing will be very, very tight with more than its fair share of spills and thrills.”

Webber will hold a press conference on Sunday morning at the event, join Tasmanian Premier Paul Lennon for a pit walk, be a guest in the Government facility and commentate the second of three V8 Supercar races for the weekend in the Network Ten commentary box with Neil Crompton and Leigh Diffey.

Bevan and Ponting will be at the track on Friday to be hosted by Dck Johnson’s Westpoint Racing and Tasman Motorsport. Bevan will share a ‘hot lap’ with Glenn Seton while Ponting will ride with rising star Jason Richards.

Re: V8 Supercars News & Results 2005

Championship Up For Grabs At Symmons Plains

AAP 10/11/05
www.smh.com.au

With the top three drivers in the V8 Supercar championship it is hard to believe Ford could finish 2005 without a single trophy.

But that is the situation as the series heads to the penultimate round at Tasmania's Symmons Plains this weekend.

While the blue oval team could not be better positioned for a third successive driver's title and back-to-back manufacturer's award, opposition Holden are lurking ominously behind ahead of its two strongest circuits.

Russell Ingall, Marcos Ambrose and Craig Lowndes lead the closest series race in a long time with Holden Racing Team's Mark Skaife and Todd Kelly snapping at their heels with 110 points separating the top five.

In the manufacturers' title race Ford lead Holden with six round wins to five.

A win in Tassie or the final round at Phillip Island would seal that silverware for Ford.

But Holden hold a 75 per cent win ratio at Symmons Plains and 70 per cent at Phillip Island - the testing track for HRT.

Series leader and defending Tassie champ Ingall says ideally Ford will seal the manufacturers' title this weekend and he will head to Melbourne in two weeks with only his blue oval teammates to worry about.

"It's a great situation for Ford, having the fight amongst the three of us," said Ingall.

"It's important that we don't give away anything to the opposition. That includes championship points or race wins. The best way to decide the championship is by having all three of us at the front.

"I'll be more than happy for Ford to win the Manufacturers' Championship in Tassie. I'd like it even more if it's the Caltex car that makes it happen."

Holden has already won the coveted Bathurst 1000 title and fifth-placed Kelly, a winner of three rounds this year, isn't giving up hope of completing a red robbery.

"Anyone who thinks this championship is done and dusted is kidding themselves," he said.

Devil Racer Closes Gap On V8 Supercar
Championship Series Lead At Symmons Plains

Release Date: 12/11/2005
www.v8supercars.com.au

Tasmania’s favourite son Marcos Ambrose closed the gap on team-mate Russell Ingall in the V8 Supercar Championship title fight after the first race of the Tasmanian Ferodo Triple Challenge today.

It proved a Holden trifecta in the opening race of the penultimate round of the V8 Supercar Championship at Symmons Plains, won by Garth Tander (HSV Dealer Team) ahead of Steven Richards (Team Perkins Holden) and Rick Kelly (HSV Dealer Team).

The real interest remains in the battle for the Championship with series leader Ingall finishing in eighth in race one and retaining his lead. Launceston-born Ambrose gained eight points after finishing fourth, closing the gap to 58 points with 320 points still up for grabs the last two events.

Craig Lowndes (Betta Electrical Ford) remains in third place in the championship after finishing fifth in today’s race. He has improved his overall position with the Bathurst winning Holden Racing Team pair of Rick Kelly and Mark Skaife the main losers.

Kelly spun twice at the hairpin on his way to finishing 15th while five-times V8 Supercar Champion Skaife spun at the same corner in front of Lowndes who was unable to avoid the collision.

Skaife limped home in 26th position and is now a distant 130 points from leader Ingall in the championship race.

Tander showed the benefit of slick pit work to help him to his second race win of the year, following his victory in the final race at Darwin in July

After trailing Richards of the front row of the grid, Tander opted to come in early on lap seven and a brilliant pit stop resulted in him taking the lead after Richards pitted two laps later.

Richards, who repeated his poll position of last year at Symmons Plains, drew within striking distance of the battle for third place in the championship after his second placing today.

Earlier Richards repeated his effort of last year in Perth by grabbing poll for the opening race. He triumphed after an incident-filled qualifying with four red flag stoppages in the combined session.

V8 Supercars Round 12 Results: Symmons Plains
Ferodo Triple Challenge

Release Date: 13/11/2005
www.v8supercars.com.au

The V8 Supercar Championship race will go down to the wire with six drivers still in the hunt after the penultimate round in Tasmania today.

Queensland driver Russell Ingall (Caltex Ford) could only manage seventh in the Ferodo Triple Challenge at Symmons Plains. This reduces his championship lead to just 49 points from Craig Lowndes as the pack closes up ahead of the Bigpond Grand Finale at Phillip Island in two weeks.

The Ferodo Triple Challenge proved a Holden benefit with Garth Tander (HSV Dealer Team) winning all three races for the first time in his career to take the honours ahead of Steven Richards (Team Perkins Holden). Tander’s team-mate Rick Kelly was third.

Launceston native Marcos Ambrose drops to third overall and 86 points behind his Stone Brothers Racing team-mate Ingall after a major mishap in the second race this morning.

The Holden Racing Team pair of Todd Kelly and Mark Skaife are fourth and fifth respectively while Richards moves up to sixth and still has a chance of claiming the title at Phillip Island.

It proved a superb weekend for the HSV Dealer team with Tander dominant and team-mate Rick Kelly finishing third. Tander jumped pole-setter Richards in the pits in Saturday’s opening race and won from the gun in both races today to bag his first round win since Bathurst in 2000.

Richards was also pleased with another strong performance from the Team Perkins Holden and is looking forward to Phillip island to hopefully push into the top-five in the championship.

While there was little between the top cars this weekend, Richards admitted the HSV team were too slick in the pits.

Lowndes enjoyed a solid weekend for the Betta Electrical Ford team with a fifth and two third placings to keep up his strong challenge for the championship in the final round.

Ingall said his Stone Brothers Racing team had a tough weekend.

Ambrose, the sentimental favourite in his final race on his home track, saw his best chance of moving up on Ingall disappear when he spun and suffered major tyre issues in race two, limping home in 27th place.

The final round of the 2005 V8 Supercar Championship takes place at the BigPond Grand Finale Phillip Island on November 25-27.
