Toyota Wins Few Fans at the Track

Well now, look at that.

Crowd Can Get Hostile As Japanese Car Maker Piles Up Nascar Victories

By KATE LINEBAUGH

July 24, 2008; Page B10

JOLIET, Ill. -- Moments after eking out a dramatic, come-from-behind victory at a Nascar race here earlier this month, Kyle Busch climbed out

the window of his No. 18 Toyota and took a bow.

The crowd's reaction? A chorus of boos.

The slim, 23-year-old Nevada native acknowledges that many hard-core Nascar fans regard him as "cocky" and "arrogant."

But, among the many race-goers who are fiercely proud of Nascar's American roots, his Japanese car is another strike against him.

"There are a lot of fans who don't necessarily like Toyota," Mr. Busch said in an interview.

Don't look they are at INDY IHRA and NHRA too...
Makes my skin crawl.

Look for the logo just below the driver head...

You see it front and center on TV...
Did anyone notice there isn't a Toyota nut or bolt anywhere on this car

I refuse to watch Nascar because it's become more about the personalities and less about the racing. Normally I would welcome new blood into motor-sport, but not the Camry, and not in "stock" car racing. Give me World Super Car challenge or Rolex Cup anyday.

I would actually watch a NASCAR race if I knew Toyota would win and piss off a bunch of NASCAR fans.

Re: Toyota Wins Few Fans at the Track

I have no interest in NASCAR, but I don't understand getting angry that a certain 'brand' is beating the others. If they're better in the race, they're better. You can't get angry at them for being good.

Let's face it, none of those cars are really what their names imply anyway. They're a plastic shell that bears only a negligible resemblance to the model they call it.

IMO if they want to race an Impala or Camry, etc... It should be a REAL Impala or Camry. Not a shell that looks almost nothing like it covering something that bears little resemblance to the production vehicles underpinnings...

Just my opinion...

Ditto here. We let our season tickets go from the Kansas Speedway because of this.
Guess what? They seem to be having trouble selling ALL the tickets to the Nascar races here now. They're, (the speedway), actually advertising them in the newspaper.
First time since opening......

You win on merit and some people hate you because where you are from.

Did you used to watch it on a Sony, Toshiba or Hitachi TV?

Re: Toyota Wins Few Fans at the Track

No, Kyle, the fans don't hate you because you drive a Toyota.

The fans hate you because you're a prissy little douche that yells at your team over the radio when you're not leading and you don't race other drivers "cleanly"... you force the issue too many times. Instead of waiting for a good time to pass, you just shove people out of the way impatiently.

That's why the fans don't like you, Kyle.

[edit] Also, it's the fanbase of Nascar. Most people watching the races want to be surprised by a winner; they don't like sitting at the beginning of a race, knowing a certain driver is probably going to win it.

Look through Nascar's history. The fans hated Carl Kiekhaefer's "Superteam" in the '50s. They hated Earnhardt in the '80s. They hated Jeff Gordon in the '90s. Now they hate Kyle Busch, because every week it seems there's at least a 50% chance he'll win, no matter what.

I don't know how Richard Petty escaped that trap, but it probably has something to do with the fact that he has spent almost every waking minute of his life endearing himself to the fans. Always being gracious, and never doing any specific thing that would make a fan spurn him.
