NASCAR hopes its Car of Tomorrow will be the basis for a world-wide racing series.

The new car is set to make its debut next month but a hybrid version is being developed as well for use in other countries outside of the United States.

"We see an opportunity somewhere down the road to develop some sort of NASCAR series in various countries," NASCAR's vice president of corporate communications Jim Hunter tells Autosport magazine.

Hunter adds the hybrid car has yet to advance beyond the planning stages but as the popularity of NASCAR increases outside North America, it's only a matter of time before planning becomes reality.

"I don't want to mislead fans into thinking that the Nextel Cup drivers are coming to England or wherever - it's too early to say," explains Hunter.

"We do know this: we have a whole lot more fans all around the world, including Europe, than we've ever had before."

NASCAR is scheduled to stage its first Busch Series race in Canada this fall in Montreal to go along with its expansion into Mexico.

Re: NASCAR to expand outside NA?

Nascar has been outside of NA before. There was a couple of Japan races a few years back, granted the races weren't for points.

It is. Watching the leadership of NASCAR is painful. They working to ruin the sport as quickly as they can.

I can't wait until we have mid size, two door, rwd carburetor fueled v-8 Citroens 'stock' cars making continuous left turns the 'Grey Poupon 500.'

I think you'll find the answer is a resounding NO. Hell, the Canadians don't even like it. I myself only find the last couple of laps a bit interesting.

Re: NASCAR to expand outside NA?

I couldn't imagine that NASCAR would do very well in other countries. For one it's seen as the epitome of all that's wrong with America by many people. It doesn't have the aura of F1 as it's too low budget, it doesn't have the technicalities of WRC, and it's not local such as V8 Supercars or DTM racing. The cars aren't particulary powerful so it can't compete with something like JTCC or F1, there isn't the excitement of differant classes like LeMans, so what does NASCAR offer the foreign crowd that they don't already have?

It's true, I only know one person that watches it. And he uses it to fall asleep. I think that NASCAR should stay in the USA only.

hey speak for yourself...........I used to like it and let's just say this is the first time in 25 years that I missed the Daytona 500 and on purpose too. Never again will I watch nascar and I'm not alone on this either. Now that toyota is part of it they'll have to look abroad to try and sucker other audiences into watching it. Too bad I use to really enjoy it.

Re: NASCAR to expand outside NA?

I think it's a great idea. The mexico race is one of the better ones these days. They should put these guys on a real race track once in a while. It's always funny to watch the purebred hick drivers try to navigate a road course.
