Re: GTO.R Returns to Rolex

It still bothers me to this day that this model did not sell well. In 6-speed 2005-6 form, it was cleanly styled yet aggressive enough in a Germanic sort of way (think Audi RS line). My friend has a blue one and I always get hot under the collar looking at it and hearing its purr. I personally would love a black one. Let the picture speak for itself:

Re: GTO.R Returns to Rolex

clean lines but high on the bland-o-design meter

If it were not called a GTO, perhaps G7 or something, and it would have sold better.

GTO is a hertiage mark and comes with a LOT of history. The new GTO simply didn't have the charisma of the classic GTOs of old.

Re: GTO.R Returns to Rolex

i really don't get it, no one says the Malibu is ruining it's heritage or of that matter the rebirth of the impala in 2000. both cars S*** on a long history and memories of bas a** cars. and as for the design prob with the new gto being to bland, if i here another gm fan bad mouth these I'm going to puke, the car was hot and has amazing qualities, and the original did not come with a lot of style, it was just a la mans with a couple exterior differences and a big motor, exactly what the new gto was. the crazy styling years didn't start till the rubber nose, and then the gto died for a long time. i think the reason no one says much about the Malibu and impala is that they had a lot of bad years in the 70's. on another note i wonder if trg would not let someone else run these cars till their drivers in the porches were back out front.

Re: GTO.R Returns to Rolex

It does seem a little ridiculous, doesn't it? No, it's not flashy. And from certain angles, it could even be called 'bland'.... but when I come out in the morning and listen to it rumble when I start it up, or feel the engine shaking the whole car slightly while sitting at a stoplight... makes me feel very forunate to own one.

Even if I don't have awsome hoodscoops and 'not really dual exhaust'.

please tell me what a GTO is supposed to look like, was it the 64, maybe the 65, or the 66/67 pair 68?, 69?, 70 or fast forward to the 73, I know the 74. The gto never HAD a LOOK like the mustang did, what it did have was those letters GTO which meant big motor, to kick ass and take names.

I happen to find ALOT of charisma in my 400 Horse 6 speed daily driven GTO. Please share what charismatic car you drive every day. Internet wannabees complain it's bland, nay-sayers say it ain't a real GTO but actual gearheads already have one in their garage. You'll notice my SEG on a daily basis. Being misunderstood often creates opportunity. Get one while you still can!

I completely agree. The GTO always had the look of the Pontiac's of the time. The most recent one had Pontiac looks, and lots of power. Seems like the classic philosophy in todays time.

Taste is of course purely subjective but the original 64 GTO was basically a lowely Pontiac Tempest with a hot motor, minor cosmetic changes and a performance suspension. It has achieved almost mythical status but if you remove all of the fond memories and nostalgia it wasn't really anything truly special. It was low key, understated and a helluva a lot of car and speed for the money...just like the 2004 - 2006 GTO.

As a proud owner of a 2005 Black GTO 6 Speed I have to tell you I get compliments on my car all of the time. A not just from guys with mullets driving IROC-Z Camaro's. BMW and Porshe drivers have given me the thumbs up. And the car has plenty of character. It's not perfect and there are a lot of things I would change. But 400+ HP, 5.0 Sec 0-60, 150MPH+ for under 30K...it's one of the best deals GM has had since 1964.
