General Motors names new Road Racing manager

General Motors names new road racing manager
WEDNESDAY 15TH JUNE 2005
www.crash.net

General Motors has named Steve Wesoloski as the new road racing group manager for GM Racing.

Beginning this month, Wesoloski will oversee engineering and budgets for GM's motorsports programmes in the American Le Mans Series, SPEED SCCA World Challenge and the Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series.

Previously Wesoloski was the GM Racing C6.R chassis engineer for the Corvette Racing team. Also during that time, Wesoloski was the lead GM Racing chassis engineer for the Pontiac GTO.R programme that will debut later this month in the GT class of the Rolex Series.

“Steve has a unique mix of engineering talent and racing experience,” said Mark Kent, director of GM Racing. “His background with production vehicles as well as his engineering contributions with the GTO.R and Corvette Racing, a four-time championship winning team, make him a perfect fit for this position.”

Wesoloski replaces Harry Turner who retired earlier this year and reports to Kent

I didn't know they would need sub group managers for different forms of racing - shows how complicated the whole thing must be.

Re: General Motors names new Road Racing manager

GM really needs to make a mark in road racing. It's nice to see Pontiac, Cadillac and the Cobalt doing well.

Many guys who own foreign sports cars follow road racing closer than NASCAR. They tend to hold their noses up at NASCAR. If GM can get some successful cars in road racing, they should pick up some converts.

I guess I tended to "hold my nose up" at road racing, but having completed the Spring Mountain driving course (formerly the Bragg-Smith School) I have a deeper understanding, and dare I say "passion" for what it takes to also turn a car right.

GM had a really good thing going with the Cadillac LMP program (ALMS & LeMans endurance), and pulled the plug just when it was starting to show results.

The Corvette program has always done well in ALMS and LeMans, and the Cadillac CTS-V is doing very well in the Speed World Challenge GT class.

BTW, the 24 Hours of LeMans is on SPEED Channel this weekend.

I own a GM product, and hold my nose up at NASCAR

Personally I'm not really into the LMP type stuff, and the Crawford / Riley "Pontiacs" don't do much for me either. I like the 200 lap grand am cup type races because they run cars that are the most like something I could buy at the dealership and race without major money or modifications that make the car into just a shell of the production car. Even Speed World Challenge GT goes too far from stock for my taste, but is on the borderline.
