Alex Gurney and the Gainsco Pontiac take points lead in the Rolex Series

SONOMA, Calif. (August 25, 2007) -- A hard-fought weekend by the No. 99 GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing Pontiac Riley team has given Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty a Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve single-season win record and placed the duo in the Daytona Prototype championship lead with a win Saturday during the Armed Forces Grand-Am 250 at Infineon Raceway.

Fogarty and Gurney battled through a tight but cleanly fought race to capture a 1.937-second win over David Donohue and Darren Law in the No. 58 Red Bull Brumos Porsche in the 97 lap race - a margin of victory that was not representative of the pace of the race.

Although the majority of the focus entering the weekend was on the tight championship battle of Fogarty, Gurney, Scott Pruett and Max Angelelli, Donohue and Law inserted themselves into a late race battle for points and the win. Donohue climbed into the lead on Lap 72, and spent the next 22 laps with Gurney glued to his tail. Despite the constant hounding, Donohue was able to keep the championship contender at bay.

Re: Alex Gurney and the Gainsco Pontiac take points lead in the Rolex Series

This is proof that Pontiac needs to be a purely performance car make...

Have the cars that will mean performance in the line-up...

The Solstice & GXP...
The G.T.O. or the Firebird... either will work...
The G8 (but, think about calling it the Tempest or something)...

Then come out with something dedicated to the Rolex racing machines that will represent the Performance division that Pontiac is supposed to be...

any other comments to add from the rest of you all?!

yes i agree.. Pontiac needs to be a full performace line, with all RWD and/or AWD vehicles!

But i think the G8 should keep its name!

seriously, imagine how people react when they see their racing performance, then walk into a showroom and see the lack-luster products on display. It's embarrassing.

Re: Alex Gurney and the Gainsco Pontiac take points lead in the Rolex Series

Scott Pruett in the #01 Luxus Riley has led in the points for a good part of the season. Although the Gainsco Pontiac has won 7 races, and has had podium finishes the whole year. It was a great race. Gurney was 4 seconds behind Pruett, then kept having great laps and was just 1 second behind. Pruett had to pit, and then Gurney passed the Bruhmos Red Bull Porsche following a mistake after a yellow on the final white/green lap. The Red Bull Porsche hadn't won all year. I think this was their best finish at second.

I was at the race in Newton, Iowa when Pruett won. In that race, Jan Magnussen in the Suntrust Ponitac missed a shift and went off the course. They never got back in Newton.

The finish sets up a one-race showdown at the season finale, the Sunchaser 1000k at the 4.486-mile, 24-turn Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah in three weeks - Sept. 15. The Daytona Prototypes will be joined by the GT class in the season's final race.

The tops in points this year are Gurney (Pontiac), Pruett (Lexus) and Angelleli (SunTrust Pontiac).

As a note: I'm confident Pontiac is collecting reams of data to flow back into production cars.
