Wagoner: Next Saab to be built in North America

Quote:
But Wagoner said GM was committed to its Saab brand and planned to make an upcoming Saab model in North America, a bid to improve the brand's profitability.

"Saab has been a critical part of our European portfolio and has the potential to be quite a good moneymaker for us, Wagoner said. "What we are planning is that in fact the next Saab will be built in North America."

Which Saab is he referring to? The 9-4? or the 9-5?

Re: Wagoner: Next Saab to be built in North America

He's referring to the 9-4. 9-3 is already slotted for Trollhattan, i think.. or is it 9-5.

He's talking about the Saab 9-4X.
The Saab 9-4 X has always been planned to be made in North America(in Mexico).
So this is not new news.

I thought he was referring to the 9-4, but perhaps the economics of the situation have changed and the 9-5 is destined for US production? Maybe I'm reading into this too much.

I'm just excited for the next line of Saabs. I love the new 9-3. That 2.8 V6 is such a smooth, powerful engine. I hope they use it in the new 9-5, which can't get here soon enough!

Couldn't it be all of them?

Since GM is now creating single sets of architectures to replace various platforms, couldn't any Saab be built in North America? The 9-5 could potentially be built in Fairfax, the next 9-3 in Lordstown, and the 9-4X and 9-1 in Mexico. Isn't this all possible?

Since the Sweedish currency has appreciated so much, transportation costs are now an issue as energy prices rise, and it is arguably "cheaper" to manufacture vehicles in the U.S. as the dollar plummets --- wouldn't it make sense to produce some Saabs in the US?

Hell, even if they produced 80% of all Saabs sold internationally in Europe, but allowed for 20% to be built in the North America for our consumption, it STILL would probably create a better return on each Saab sold here. And that would make Saab profitable very quickly, no?

To me, I dont see this being anymore of an issue than building the Cruze in Lordstown, South Korea, or South America. Or for that matter, making seemingly identical "Opels" in Germany, China, or the US.

Just a thought...

Flexible architectures... yes. Flexible plants? I've seen nothing that points to that fact, except an "idea" to do so.
Besides, 9-3, 9-4, and 9-5 are... Delta II, ThetaEpsilon, and Epsilon II.
Last I looked, they're not interchangeable.

Possible? Yes.... if a more competent company were running the show.

Sweden not being part of the Eurozone is detrimental to say the least. That much I understand.
But building all in 1 plant.... in the US? Dont think GM thinks that way.
Besides, GM would lump all Epsilon II's in one plant and build that way.
