One of the former Russian engineers then most famously said "Ze table, she cost more than a car.!" Refering to how out of control the table costs were relative to a car.

He is probably a member of Putin's party and must say this as he probably fears for his life. I mean he couldn't really say anything to the opposite as Putin would have him sent to the gulags.

GM about to go off the cliff financially = motivated seller.

GM having RWD and being able to reverse off of the cliff edge and start driving away slowly in a state of shock = not a motivated seller.

Given the mess the GFC crisis has caused I would not be surprised that some of this talk (Russia, Germany etc) is just popular anti American talk to keep the voters happy. Just like Chicago being kicked out of the running for the Olympics at the first round when the general consensus was they were just about the strongest candidate.

I was in states for a month, in South Korea for a month, In Finland for a half of year and a year in Germany. I know how to compare.

By the way - here is translation of Putin's speech regarding "no deal" with Opel sale. It must be interesting. More interesting to see himself speaking it.

Decision of General Motors to cancel the deal doesn’t affect our interests. This is clear.
But we were ready to support it. We supported Sberbank’s decision to take part in Sberbank Magna consortium/ We gave them political support. Even more, couple of days ago during the conversation with German chancellor I confirmed the decision of Russian Government to release governmental guarantees for 250mlns Euros to ease pressure for German Government and German financial institutes.
Of cause there were our own interest to save Opel, regarding investments to our car industry and partially technology sharing.
A big job was done by consortium members with governments, trade unions and GM itself. The plan was fully agreed. The refusal to keep the deal at the last moment doesn’t affect our interests, but says a lot about culture of communication of our American partners with their counteragents. This fact is obvious.
What we see now in European mass media confirms that GM warned nobody, didn’t talk to anybody. Without preliminary agreement they just faced everybody with the fact, Despite of all preliminary agreements, signed documents, even legal.
As our Minister said – this is a good lesson. Not an experience – but lesson. And we should keep in mind such way of business running in the future. But I repeat – such neglectful relation to the partners – mostly European partners, not us – we should remember that and keep it in mind.
Regarding our plans – they will not be changed. We will cooperate with everybody, including American manufacturers. GM is represented in Russian Federation. We will support its activities in Russia the same way as we support our contacts with European manufacturers – German, French – with everybody, who is represented on our market. I mean, for example, Japanese.
