Massage seats and a perfume diffuser aren't features you'd expect on a mass-market compact car. But they're available in Europe on the redesigned Opel Astra, at the directive of the brand's marketing maven, Tina Mueller.
It has been two years since General Motors plucked Mueller and her brand-whiz bona fides from the cosmetics industry to give Opel a sorely needed makeover. Since then she has confronted Opel's faded image with edgy advertising that all but commands viewers to ditch their preconceived notions of the 116-year-old German car brand. The title of her first big campaign literally urged people to "unpark" the image of Opel in their heads.
Much is riding on the resuscitation plan laid out by Mueller and her boss, Opel chief Karl-Thomas Neumann. GM is counting on Opel to return to profitability next year and, by 2022, to contribute 5 percent pretax operating profit. The plan relies on growing market share to 8 percent by then, from 6.7 percent today.
There are Rupert you will be to get into Mrs Troopers good books, buy a new Astra that smells of roses, either that or she think you have another woman.
Still gotta be better than following a smelly ole VW diesel oil burner thats got sooty BO.
The last car SWMBO had was a Vauxhall Nova (Opel Corsa rebadge, no relation to Chevrolet Nova) - when I retired we reverted to just one vehicle which had to be an all-rounder - the last GM car I had was a Vauxhall Astra-G, one of their better products, but the growing need for 4wd and greater towing ability ended my association with GM.
Send me a PM when GM Europe sells a luxury 4wd SUV with 262 PS / 580 Nm, tows 3,500 kg, has 286 mm ground clearance and will average 36 mpg "real-world" overall. I've no affinity with diesel but the low rpm turbo-torque becomes irresistable.
I'll let SWMBO choose the fragrance for the air-freshener hung on the rear view mirror !
Re: No more nasty niffs in your Opel thanks to brand's marketing executive Tina Muell
GM's Harley Earl during his time had a team of women involved with vehicle colors and accessories, I guess he realized women play a big part in determining the purchase of a vehicle. Harley started "Project Opel" which led to the development of the Corvette. Maybe someday pink will be a color choice.

Harley was a smart cookie, jossch. The 50s saw pastels everywhere, and I'd like to see one maker go out on a limb and offer some 50s palates again on their cars.

I applaud this move. A fashion person with actual experience. Opel needs to do something/someone to shake things up after GM poisoned the well with the German Government and public during the bankruptcy.
Cadillac needs someone like this too more than they need Melody Lee.
Her, Neumann and Adams are doing great job with Opel. I just hope GM will not come with some stupid and crazy idea to change them in next few years :/
