Re: Comparision: New Astra 1.4 Turbo vs. Golf VI 1.4 TSI

Astra definitely looks better than the Golf. Good to see it won on performance, too.

I wish we had the option to buy either vehicle. Let's hope the generic looking Cruze is close to as good as these cars.

Normaly I don't like silver/chrome interior in mainstream cars, because it looks cheap. Luckily Opel use way better looking plastic compared to the last Astra.

You can head over to the closest VW dealership and pick up a Golf anytime you like.

Yes, I know this. I have a new Beattle Convertible so I'm in a VW showroom when having it serviced. I don't believe we can get the 1.4T engine which I like better than the 2.5.

You are right about the lack of engine choices in NA. With the new Golf you can only get the 2.5L gas or 2.0L Turbo Diesel.

I thought, initially, you were referring to the Golf in general and not the 1.4L version specifically.

Imo this is GM's best small car, so why isn't it offered globally??
Because GM hasn't changed it's stripes.

Astra-Cobalt
Astra-Cruze

Buick of all brands gets the Astra.

Don't mean to highjack this thread - but did you see the "Bildergalerie 2011er Chevrolet Caprice PPV" with lots of other police cars including a Crown Victoria with a girl (presumably "Victoria") showing what a "police stripper" really means and Mercedes police vehicles. Latter makes me think there could be an opportunity for an Opel PPV (Diplomat revival maybe?).

Re: Comparision: New Astra 1.4 Turbo vs. Golf VI 1.4 TSI

For those curious about the fuel economy ratings of this Astra, according to this:
http://www.321auto.com/Info/Essais/E..._Turbo-658.asp

according to the European standards, it's rated at 7,8 l/100 Km in the urban cycle and 4,8 l/100 Km in the extra urban cycle. So I estimate the equivalent to 30 MPG City and 39 MPG Highway according to the EPA.

Re: Comparision: New Astra 1.4 Turbo vs. Golf VI 1.4 TSI

Also, I've downloaded the brochure from Opel's german site. The Astra 1.4 Turbo also comes with a 6-speed transmission. The European fuel economy ratings for it are 9,7 l/100 Km Urban and 5,5 l/100 Km Extra-Urban. It seems a lot worse than it is, the European test seems harder on traditional automatics. By comparison with the Astra automatic 1.8L we got here, I estimate around 26 MPG City, 34 MPG Highway. So for people hoping the Cruze gets more than 40 MPG, apparently it may get 40 in manual form, but the automatic seems to take quite a beating on that front.

Here's a snapshot from the German brochure about the different engines, it's in German but I think you can figure out what it means, I did without speaking one word of German.

Re: Comparision: New Astra 1.4 Turbo vs. Golf VI 1.4 TSI

Most times the listed FE is not close to the reality.

Anyway, indeed Autobild is pro-VW most times. I don't understand why Golf has been any better in all those test through the years. But fact is, is that people rather buy something they feel accustomed to, than something radically new. Astra always looked better than Golf since the 90's, Golf just had a bestseller in the 70's and they just were so smart to stick to that image. Therefore the Golf never radically changed its appearance. Just be honost, those Golf I's are still cruising the worlds roads. That helps to sell any new gen Golf.
That in prospect, the Astra will never outsell the golf. Not even close. Not even while the Astra is a better car in many aspects.

I hope GM can learn out of this. The Golf platform is the most sold platform in the world. By far! Not only as VW Golf, but also as Seat and Skoda. Even the A4 and A3 platforms are closely related to the Golf platform.

Cadillac is so focussed on comparing to BMW models, that they forget that the BMW1 is a Golf fighter along with the Astra and is also unable to come close. The Golf is just an unbeatable icon in its class since 30 what years.
