We buy a lot of stuff from China, and could buy nothing from them in a trade war. By imposing a 500% import fee on everything, we could end China's dominance of low cost goods in the US.
So in essence, we are (slightly) dependent on cheap Chinese goods, and they are strongly dependent upon OUR buying their cheap goods. That could all change if we chose to buy from India instead. In many ways, China and the US are locked together in an uncomfortable embrace.
It isn't the essentials that matter - it is the massive amount of day-to-day goods that represent a very significant chunk of consumer spending. You want to jack-up the average consumers spending on clothes, electronics, home decor, small appliances, almost every little knick-knack item imaginable by 5x and think people will be pleased? The dependency is not on strategic good it is on feeding the consumer low-cost manufactured goods that keep the cost-of-living low. That is an economic-political straight-jacket.

China and Russia are both criminally corrupt states that abuse their own citizens for the advantage of a very few. Putin at least has to undergo some open political challenges - no such problem in China where the Communist party is still the "peoples' party". Chinese cars are two generations behind not one.

How about you reveal your bias?
