STS eclipsed by CTS

2008 Review from Chicago Sun Times

STS eclipsed by CTS

November 27, 2007
BY JILL CIMINILLO SearchChicago - Autos Editor
I need to start this review by saying that I absolutely loved the all-new 2008 Cadillac CTS. Loved it. From the fit and finish to the ride and handling, I thought the new CTS was close to perfect. In fact, the only negative I cited (Sept. 18, 2008 Cadillac CTS) is that the CTS needs "a groove or hole that will allow an MP3 player to emerge from the center console for easy adjustment." This is minor, and in all other respects, I loved the CTS.
So, it is almost with regret that I write the 2008 Cadillac STS review. Even though it got some tweaks for 2008, the STS gets upstaged by its cheaper little brother.

Re: STS eclipsed by CTS

STS would not have been upstaged if they used the SLS interior.
Apparently, they believe that STS is no longer deserving of real upgrades. It's a pathetic decision.

That being said, the new STS upgrades are nice. Better fit and finish. Somewhat better materials. But the car remains outclassed. And that's just sad.

Re: STS eclipsed by CTS

Yeah, the new STS just look like a softer/rounder old CTS. Caddy went cheap with the upgrade.

Re: STS eclipsed by CTS

I know I'm in the small minority here, but I like the styling of the STS better- in person, I prefer its proportions and stance, and it looks more upscale to me.

Of course, this doesn't change the facts that the CTS has similar performance and room, and a much better interior, for thousands less. I really feel frustrated by the STS- I can't escape the sneaking suspicion that the car, with just a little more attention, could have been a worldbeater.

Really? The first-gen CTS was produced from MY2003 to MY2007. Wouldn't it make sense that the new STS would appear in MY2010? Still a little long, but better than three years.

I would agree with you about the first-gen CTS vs the STS, but the new one blows the STS out of the water, inside and out.

But then again, all those cars have "fart burners" on them. That "fart burner" ads 5-10HP to your car ;some of those small Hondas can whip a Vett off the line. (from anti-rice.com)
So 115hp+10hp=430hp, at least in ricerland

There is no new STS.
CTS will move up the ladder and slot where STS was.
BLS will move in and slot where CTS was supposed to be.
"XLS" will enter the game replacing STS and DTS as a more "traditional" offering.

I think 2010 makes the most sense. That would be perfect timing for a CTS MCE.

Re: STS eclipsed by CTS

They should have discontinued the STS when the CTS was introduced.

Lets face it, anyone who goes out looking at a new STS will probably be driving home in a new CTS for thousands less.

There would be no loss of sales, because I am very confident that the potential sales would be lost to the comparable in size CTS and the larger DTS.

They could save a lot of money if they just can it now.

Re: STS eclipsed by CTS

I really don't know who would buy an STS over a CTS. I'd feel kind of like I was dating the nice girl with a smoking hot younger sister.

Re: STS eclipsed by CTS

Having the Commie interior and extra wheelbase would work wonders for the car... But no we get the stail stuff again.... The STS was to small from the begining....

Thats even worst. If that is true then CTS will be the biggest sedan in cadillac lineup in next 5 years??.
I don't think this is good news if cadillac wants to be standard of the world again.

That is sooooo sad..........I give it 2 years max before the present car is discontinued...........I too like the original STS before the added CTS fender slits. It was just proportioned right. If GM would have kept the STS price at $40K it would have been a real seller. Instead GM fell into the same trap Honda did with the new RL. Just because you price at $50K,doesn't make it an automatic contender at that level.

Gm will eventually discontinue the STS and use the extra capacity to build more CTSes.
