Possible new Cadillac naming scheme

If you liked alphabet soup as a kid, make an appointment at your Cadillac dealer for three to five years from now. That's because GM has recently trademarked several new nameplates for Cadillac, and so far we're worried and a bit confused.
At present, these names are trademarked in Europe and Canada. However, companies often register their trademarks in foreign markets first, and later in the United States.
This potential new naming system is undoubtedly complicated, but we will try and lay it out in the simplest way possible. So far, GM has trademarked:
  • DT7
  • CT6
  • CT5
  • BT3
  • AT1
  • DTX
  • CTX
  • BTX

Re: New cadillac naming scheme

Oh no no no. How dumb. Just when we start getting used to their silly naming scheme they come up with another silly naming scheme. As it is there's already no rhyme or reason... the B, C, D and S prefixes I get, and I suppose the S' at the end mean sedan... but why is the wagon the BLS? Why not the BLW? Why is it bLs and not bTs? Argh!

Lets hope they've trademarked these as names for all the new fancy keyfobs they're going to offer next year...

Re: New cadillac naming scheme

I hate the new Cadillac naming scheme, Deville, Seville and Eldorado sounded a lot better at least the Escalade still has a normal name.

Re: New cadillac naming scheme

Hmmm... I guess it started out making a bit of sense...

ETC = Eldorado touring coupe
STS = Seville touring sedan (which was basically an Eldorado sedan in spirit)
CTS = Catera touring sedan (I know Caddy has said this isn't the case, but I don't believe them)
DTS = Deville touring sedan

Logic would lead that a CTS coupe would be a CTC and a CTS wagon would be a CTW; I think B is dumb, but there should be a BTS, BTC, and BTW. SRX doesn't make any sense to me... but I think AWDs could have the X suffix... so CTX, basically...

Oh heck I don't know. It angers me that it's already confusing and they might very well make it more so.

Re: New cadillac naming scheme

Oh good grief.... Just when you think it couldn't get any worse... GM finds a way to exacerbate the issue!!

I give up.

A naming system should make sense off the bat, without requiring a dictionary.

Who the heck is running Cadillac!!

Please keep watching folks, this could be the best GMI Freakout of all time.

They could be burning Bob Lutz in ephigy in front of the RenCen by 5pm today.

I like the new naming scheme. It emulates BMW and has a futuristic/upscale ring to it.

Re: New cadillac naming scheme

Sounds like Cadillac just being envious of the Germans, and trying to combine Mercedes and BMW's naming systems. My best guesses...
  • DT7 - Maybe a full-size coupe?
  • CT6 - Base model, V6 CTS
  • CT5 - CTS coupe (should be CTC! )
  • BT3 - BTS coupe (again, BTC)
  • AT1 - a possible Gamma Caddy? Probably for Europe only
  • DTX - Large crossover? Lambda perhaps?
  • CTX - An SRX replacement?
  • BTX - The Theta crossover we've already seen
Either way, I figure that the X denotes a crossover, and the odd numbers are coupes. Maybe the DTX replaces the Escalade eventually? Who knows. Caddy should have never strayed from real names, but at least CTS equaling "Catera Touring Sedan" made sense. These new "names" are just stupid.

I love Cadillac, so this continues to be one of my biggest gripes with GM. How ignorant can a company be to waste time and money on something like this.

Do you mean before or after it gets "disappeared" because someone thought it off the beaten path and therefore not appropriate for the simple minds of GMI-ers to ponder?
