No V8 For 2011 Cadillac STS

No V8 For 2011 Cadillac STS
GM online order guide confirms the Northstar is gone in 2011 MY.

Details surrounding General Motors' 2011 model-year vehicles is just starting to trickle out. Although no official announcement has been made, a glance at GM's online order guide is confirming that the 2011 Cadillac STS will be devoid of a V8 option.

Since it's launch in the 2005 model-year, the STS has had GM's well-known 4.6L Northstar V8 optional. The overhead cam V8 was rated at 320 horsepower and 315 lb-ft. of torque in the STS application. The Northstar engine dates back to about 1992 and has been in constant use since, with occasional updates.

For the 2008 model-year GM added the 3.6L SIDI V6 as the base engine, replacing the old port injected 3.6L. The new V6 boosted the STS's base power ratings to 302 horsepower and 272 lb-ft. of torque, closing the gap between the V6 and V8 models considerably.

GM has been phasing out the Northstar V8 over the last two years, so this comes as no surprise. It is unclear how much longer the aging STS will remain in production. This may be further confirmation that there will not be a Cadillac DTS in 2011 as the Northstar is it's only engine option.

Stay with GMInsidenews over the coming months as 2011 model-year details continue to become known.

Re: No V8 For 2011 Cadillac STS

Having a V8 that only makes 320 horsepower is horrible. While I really wish that GM had kept up engineering on it and made it competitive again, having a V8 with 15ish more horsepower than a V6 is just bad.

Sure sounds like DTS is out. I can't see a major change in powertrains with it's short life left.

Re: No V8 For 2011 Cadillac STS

To be accurate the NorthStar dates back to early 1992, not 1991. It was first used in the MY 1993 Cadillac Allante which hit the streets in April 1992.

It was standard in the 1993 STS and was used in the Devile first in 1994.

This news is not unexpected but is the beginning of the end of V8's in the Cadillac brand. What a sad end to such a great brand.
It was only 14 years ago (1996) that EVERY Cadillac sold ONLY had V8's...

Very Very sad news.

Re: No V8 For 2011 Cadillac STS

As suggested on another thread, are we seeing the STS and DTs slowly being replaced by XTS?
If the next gen CTS grows to about G8 size and the new Alpa products cover the C/D size then
maybe there is no perceived gap in RWD cars...

I really liked the STS and it's such a shame to see it die like this.

Re: No V8 For 2011 Cadillac STS

I'm surprised to hear that there's going to be a 2011 STS, I thought it was going out after MY2010 like the DTS.

It's a shame the Seville line ends like this.

I agree - kill it with fire! No major updates while the Chinese get the better SLS

GM should no longer do anything half-assed. Either put the resources into it or drop the vehicle.

Re: No V8 For 2011 Cadillac STS

The only reason they’re not dropping the STS, as they should, is because they’re worried about the number of vehicles under the brand name. Without the STS they’d be down to one Car, a SUV and a CUV for 2011.

They’re worried about the numbers/appearance. Whether they are going to focus on quantity vs. quality of product going forward is the question. Buick has a chance to firmly come out from under Cadillac’s shadow. Gm has no choice but to take the figurative leash off of Buick. Harley Earl should be smiling now. ;-)

Re: No V8 For 2011 Cadillac STS

Cadillacs have featured V8s since when? 1914.

The first mass-produced V8 ever. And it appears this is the last V8 Cadillac car (OK, Escalades, but I really hate calling 'em Cadillacs).

This is a huge, sad milestone.

So what do you think of the 4.8L and 5.3L V-8's used in the GMT900's? 302, and 315 hp respectively. In your eyes what should the minimum horsepower from a V8 be?

I think you forgot about the CTS-V.
