HSV Cadillac: Supercharged V6 CTS-V For Australia? Coupe & Wagon To Follow CTS Sedan

HSV CTS-V Tip

Byron Mathioudakis & Terry Martin
30 January 2008
www.goauto.com.au

Cadillac's decision not to produce a righthand drive version of its bahn-storming CTS-V has been described as “a tragedy” by General Motors vice-chairman Bob Lutz, but the product czar has suggested that Holden Special Vehicles could be contracted to produce a turbocharged V6 in lieu of a V8.

Speaking to the Australian media in Detroit earlier this month at the unveiling of the V8- powered version of the compact Cadillac CTS sedan, Mr Lutz blamed its production limitations on a lack of space in the engine bay.

“When we put the 6.3-litre V8 engine and put all the plumbing in we ran out of real estate (under the bonnet),” Mr Lutz explained. “And it is a tragedy. Australians are going to be deprived.”

GM is on record for stating that all future Cadillac products will be devised in both leftand right-hand drive styles. CTS chief engineer Elizabeth Pilibosian backed up Mr Lutz’s explanation. A veteran of three decades with GM, she told GoAuto that there was simply no more room for the modifi ed engine and its auxiliary components to fit when switched from left to right-hand drive.

“It just couldn’t be done,” Mrs Pilibosian said. “And believe me, we tried.”

Cadillac's Fresh Attack

Byron Mathioudakis

CTS coupe and wagon due in 2009, ahead of a much wider Caddy range.

Cadillac's capable CTS Mk2 sedan is leading a host of Australian-bound new-model activity from the century-old marque. First Cad off the rank after the sedan will be the CTS Coupe, which managed to be the bestkept secret at this month’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Even Cadillac boss Jim Taylor was surprised that word had not leaked out prior to the CTS Coupe concept’s unveiling on the second press day of the motor show.

Although Cadillac is only calling its show-stealing two-door coupe a concept for now, production is a certainty. Expect an announcement later in 2008, with vehicles arriving sometime next year.

GM product czar Bob Lutz said that both the CTS coupe and sedan were on the drawing board at the same time, adding that it looked so great that “we just had to do it”.

Right. Just like the Mercedes AMG line of "6.3L" engines that actually displace 6208cc.

In referring to the CTS-V in the first statement and the CTS Coupe in the second statement, I think Lutz made two of the biggest understatements of the decade in the auto industry.

"World's fastest production sedan" is a title already familiar to AU manufacturers

This is going to be fast. I hope we can also get the twin turbo V6. Perhaps it can find its way into saabs and also put the GT-R twin turbo VQ in its place.. eh?

HSV shouldnt bother imo.
Sales will be sooooooo small. They'd probably sell 50 in a year, in all seriousness.

HSV should focus on bringing a proper range topper ......... ie, LS7 or LS9 in the GTS...
LS3s for the Senator and Grange.
And leave the LS2 in the Clubsport for now.

Alloytec 3.6L is simply the name Holden uses for the HFV6.

They are almost identical bar a few little extras in the Caddy to pump tome more power.

The idea of a turbo charged 3.6 V6 to go below the CTS-V and above the current 3.6 appeals to me. It doesn't have to be as overly aggresive as the V, and would make a very quick, stealthy sports sedan.

BMW uses it's twin turbo 6 to good efect in the 335i and the engine's already been previewed in Holden's Torana TT36 concept.

If Cadillac aren't going to replace Northstar, this could be a reasonable alternative.

The BMW Twin Turbo in the 335 is weak.
I'd rather the Turbo X version

The 3.8 V6 in the GT-R is all new, not based off VQ.

Do you do any research at all before you bash cars, engines, or companies?

No doubt!!! The 300hp TTV6 in the 335 is anything but weak. For low to mid 40's(which is close to CTS money) a 335 could walk all over just about anything in that price range! Not that I am a huge BMW fan or anything, but the 335 is a hell of a deal concidering the price and driveability, and how close it is in performance in relation to the previous gen M3! I would like to see GM do some turbo DI 3.6 engines! mabey in the 350hp range. GM said adding a turbocharger would cost in the extra $200-$500 range, add a coupe extra hundered to a existing 3.6 car, and volia.
