GM develops V6 diesel engine with VM Motori...for the Cadillac CTS

    PRESS RELEASE
    Cento, March 2007

Cadillac to adopt Italian Diesel: VM Motori Jointly Developing V-6 diesel with GM

VM Motori is jointly developing with General Motors Corp., (GM) a premium V-6 turbo-diesel engine that will launch in the Cadillac CTS in 2009.

The new 2.9-liter V-6 diesel engine (184 kW/250 hp), which was unveiled by GM at the Geneva Motor Show on March 6, features state-of-the-art injection and combustion technology for low emissions and high performance.

GM’s development of its new engine is being coordinated under the leadership of GM Powertrain’s European operations in Turin, Italy, in cooperation with VM Motori based in Cento, Italy. VM Motori will build the new unit at its plant in Cento, Italy, and is responsible for the engine’s design, development and bench testing. GM Powertrain will focus on the development of the clean combustion process, electronic engine control and exhaust-gas aftertreatment, as well as calibration and integration into GM vehicles.

The GM V-6 diesel is a compact 60-degree bank angle, 83.0 mm bore and 90.4 mm stroke, which results in displacement of 2935 cubic centimeters and a compression ratio of 16.5:1. It has a flexible architecture to allow installations in both longitudinal and transverse applications and can be adapted to a wide range of two- or four-wheel-drive vehicles.

The engine was designed to provide low emissions and outstanding performance and fuel economy. The engine is designed to meet future EURO 5 emissions standards.

The cylinder block bed plate is made of Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI). This provides a compact and robust structure and makes it possible to improve the traditional parameters of rigidity and mass, and optimizes engine packaging, refinement and performance.

The cylinder heads, with four valves per cylinder, dual overhead camshaft and hydraulic tappets, are aluminum, while the rocker cover and intake manifold are made from plastic. This contributes to the engine’s overall reduced weight.

The engine’s design includes a high-pressure common-rail injection system, which reaches a maximum injection pressure of 2,000 bar. The rapid actuation piezo fuelinjectors allow up to eight injections per combustion cycle.

The V-6 engine management system enables optimal fuel economy as well as reduced emissions and noise by using GM’s recently developed combustion control technology. High-speed, piezo-resistive cylinder pressure sensors are integrated within the engine glow plugs. These specialized sensors acquire realtime data from the combustion process, enabling instantaneous fine-tuning of the fuel injection process.

The 2.9L is also equipped with an exhaust gas circulation system with an electric valve, by-pass valve and a small, but highly efficient, heat exchanging radiator.

The 2.9 liter V-6 diesel will generate 250 horsepower (184 kW) and torque of 550 Nm @ 2,000 rpm.

This high level of performance is possible thanks to the use of a water-cooled variable geometry turbo (VGT) with an electronic actuator.

I remember reading about this before. The amount of power, both as horsepower and torque is very impressive. This would be well worth it in the US, and not just in Cadillac models, even if they detune it for less power.

That engine would be great in say a Malibu, impala or colorado/canyon.

Sheesh, with that much torque, it would be good in anything from half ton trucks, to mid size sedans.....

I did the math, that's 405 foot pounds for us non-metric people.

I'd like one in a 1/2 ton pickup.

Decent HP and more torque than any* of the gas engines.

*excluding the 6.2l as it is not yet available in the Silvy.

Might even break the 30mpg mark...

Please give a de-tuned one to Saab then let them tune it with a turbo! ;-)

A turbo is a terrible thing to waste!

That's the same make and (almost) size of the diesel being suggested for the Holden Commodore in Australia.

I hope GM has the guts to bring this to North America. I can see it in the GMC Acadia. Maybe not the other lamdas (Definitely not the Buick) just because of GMC having the "truck" image and diesels are known as truck engines to most of this country.
They said it couldn't be done. That is until I did it.

That's pretty cool stuff. Does anyone know if it's e-boosted, too?

Re: GM develops V6 diesel engine with VM Motori...for the Cadillac CTS

It seems more and more likely that numerous vehicles sold in the USA will offer Diesel engines by 2009 or 2010. The sooner the better. I'd be in favor of a ban on gasoline engines after 2011. Besides the far better fuel economy, we would then quickly have a situation in which fuel stations all sold the same Diesel fuel, leading to further reductions in cost. Gasoline cars would become collector items by 2020,a dn I am sure that gasoline would still be available for them.

Can the Outlook/Acadia transaxle handle that much torque?
