Cadillac teases 2013 'glamour' concept car

Looking to recapture some of its past luster, Cadillac showed renderings of a concept car that will appear at a 2013 auto show.

The car is an attempt for the brand to "reflect back not for nostalgia, but what made us great at the time," said Clay Dean, Cadillac director of advanced design.

The concept could point the future design direction of the brand, under the informal slogan of "American glamour meets American technology," Dean said. The renderings were briefly shown at a media gathering in Monterey, Calif., on Aug. 16.

Umm... So the "D1ck Tracy" look is gonna stay?


Art & Science was nice because it echoed the past with bold lines and heritage cues. Anything further than that borders on going retro.

I like the "glamour" aspect of Cadillac's direction. It's a good start if Cadillac as a whole is going to point in that direction.

A&S has been quite 'sheer' in its execution, particularly the first CTS. Cadillac has been adding a bit more volume and curvyness (for lack of a better -- or proper -- term) with the CTS v2 and the new ATS (and the Ciel showcar). I suspect a couple steps more in that direction constitutes a new 'look' that will be launched with this concept.

IMO Cadillac is among the style leaders in this segment. Audi was, but is stagnating. Jaguar is coming on really strong, with a theme that seems to still have some legs. BMW and Mercedes have really jumped the shark on the design front, though the quality of the cars (and brand) make that less of an issue for them. Cadillac really needs to keep pressing forward on design leadership.

Looks like it could be a coupe, possible CTS coupe concept? With the new CTS sedan comming soon, it would make sense to show a coupe concept too. Kinda like what they did with the first CTS coupe.

Because the bright light from the headlights does not line up with the turn lamps, as in all other recent Caddy headlights, it may be a hidden headlight that is hidden behind a metal color cover when not in use - like I put on the Ciel below...

Looks to me like the bottom of the C-pillar, part of the trunk lid and the end of a swept-up tail light. I really like what that second picture hints at, especially what I think is the tail light.

The front does seem a bit exaggerated, as others have pointed out. But it's a concept -- it's good to have some margin for the inevitable toning down that happens for production. Concepts that are already "just right" often end up as bland and boring production models.
