Cadillac Slaps $100,000 Tag on XLR-V

Cadillac Slaps $100,000 Tag on XLR-V

Date Posted 10-04-2005

DETROIT — Cadillac's new XLR-V, the performance variant of the hardtop roadster, will carry a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $100,000 when it arrives in showrooms later this year. The companion STS-V sedan will be priced at about $77,000.

The XLR-V is fitted with a supercharged, 4.4-liter version of General Motors' Northstar V8. The engine makes 440 horsepower and drives the rear wheels through a new six-speed automatic with manual-shift capability. Cadillac claims 0-to-60-mph acceleration in fewer than 5 seconds.

Also due this fall is the STS-V, which shares the supercharged, 4.4-liter unit and six-speed gearbox. Like the XLR-V, the high-performance sedan gets larger wheels and tires, along with the appropriate suspension modifications.

In a related move, GM announced that 49-year-old Bob Kruse will replace Mark Reuss, 42, as head of the company's performance division, which is responsible for development of the V-Series Cadillacs, among other goodies. Kruse retains his title as executive director of North America vehicle integration, while Reuss shifts to executive director of vehicle systems.

What this means to you: For about $25,000 less than the price of a Mercedes SL55 AMG, you can drive a 440-hp Cadillac roadster.

Well, I guess the "Should Caddy Venture into the 100k market?" question will shortly be answered!

No way. It's fast but not that nice. I just don't like the XLR for some reason, inside and out. Too "flat" looking.

Re: Cadillac Slaps $100,000 Tag on XLR-V

I think the XLR is a valuable car for GM, but is the SSR? I can't help but wonder how much more money it would have taken to build the Velite instead of the SSR (I know SSR was out years before the Velite concept... just talking from a purely academic standpoint). Would the STS platform have worked? They could have used exisiting engines and transmissions, and like the Solstice, used odds and ends from the GM parts bin to create a unique-feeling vehicle with lots of shared components. Seats out of this, a steering wheel off of that, a nice set of GM rims... and TADA! They'd have had a vehicle that could appeal to many more people, and still be a halo of sorts.

I really like the SSR, but question the importance of it over another vehicle like the Velite. That folding hardtop must have cost a fortune... you could have put a very nice lined softtop with rear glass into a Velite and had money left over, I'd think.

Sorry to get off topic. The XLR-V inspired it!

Re: Cadillac Slaps $100,000 Tag on XLR-V

Hmm... I expected $90K as the high limit on the XLR-V. I guess I was a bit off.
$77K for STS-V is in line with my expectations though.

When you put in perspective with the AMG... it's a bargain. But I'd like to see performance numbers of both and the luxury items of both. SOmehow, i think the AMG will win out, though you'll ahve to pay $25K more to get it.

You are very right. This is a misprint.

Does anybody know the curb weight of this?

In the STS-V it makes 469. In the XLR-V because of the exhaust restrictions it makes less.

This iw WAY too much for this car. Then again I thought the "regular" XLR cost too much too. We will see what happens when it gets to market. Nice but not that nice.

It may produce less but it doesn't produce 30 less hp.

Re: Cadillac Slaps $100,000 Tag on XLR-V

Too expensive, the XLR-V has base corvette performance, and $77k for the STS is a lot. I have a feeling the STS will fall behind the E55, M5, RS6, etc, in the comparison tests. The STS has a lot of power, but the interior could still be better, and the car could be more lightweight and handle better. I would have thought about $74k for the STS, 90k for the XLR V-series would have been better.

I think the pricing is really good for what it is. In Canada, after converting, it's $118,000. Not to shabby seeing as the regular one is $97,000
