BMWBLOG Test Drive: 2013 Cadillac ATS 2.0t

The 2012 Detroit Auto Show hosted the world premiere of the Cadillac ATS. The first compact Cadillac joins the midsize segment to take on BMW’s top-seller, the 3 Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

The Detroit-based brand desperately needed a successful entry luxury car in a segment with the highest sales. With the ATS, Cadillac steps back into the premium compact-sedan market for the first time in 20 years.

Cadillac ATS has so far enjoyed a good amount of positive press and even won the 2013 North American Car Of The Year Award, so with those in mind we decided to test one ourselves.

    The Design.

We got our hands on a White Diamond 2.0T model with the latest ZF electric power steering. Following the design lines of the CTS, the premium compact Cadillac showcases a bold, angular exterior design with the signature LED vertical lights and and sharp-looking front-grille. These twin vertical blades of light start in the lower fascia and extend through the edge of the headlights for a dramatic nighttime signature.

The bumper forms a sharp air dam near the sculpted corners which enhance its sporty look.

We especially liked the rear-end design. The pinched LED brake light bar doubles as a spoiler at high speed while the twin chrome exhaust finishers are fitted within a blacked-out diffuser. The vertical LED taillights are easily recognizable at night time.

Very pleasing to see that BMWBLOG liked the ATS, I'd expect such a website to be one of the most critical.

I browse a few BMW forums as a former owner of an E46 and I have to say many BMW owners are happy there is stronger competition and like the ATS quite a bit. Of course there are those who won't buy anything but a BMW and anything less is a piece of crap. Majority though actually like the car.

It was a very nice write up. I am not a BMW fan, if I were I might feel different, but that seemed like an unbiased opinion of the ATS and it seems to go along with other reviews I have read.

It's great that even die-hard BMW fans appreciate what the competition is putting out

Cadillac's certainly getting some respect with their latest offerings.

Re: BMWBLOG Test Drive: 2013 Cadillac ATS 2.0t

As a Bimmer fan myself (along with GM) very pleased to see BMWBLOG give good feedback on the ATS. Having driven both the ATS and the current gen 3 Series myself (as well as my fair share of E90 and E46 grade BMW's, I think it was a good move by Caddy to tune the car to be close to the E46 versus the current gen and E90 grade 3-Series in terms of handling and ride quality. The E46 grade 3-Series was an excellent handling car in its day, and had the crispness and steering accuracy (especially in M3 form) which is sorely missing from the current gen 3 which has appeared to eschew those two traits to focus on toys and luxury.

That said, I suspect BMW is underrating its 2.0 liter just a tad, the 328i Sportline I drove awhile back felt like it had more than 240 horses, and I suspect the engines actual horsepower figure is closer to 260 horses versus whats advertised (a common ploy to foil the insurance companies). As for the Caddy's CUE system will it be superior to I-Drive? probably not look at Audi's MMI and Benz's COMMAND system, both were designed to trump I-Drive and yet both have failed (though hats off to MMI for an easier acclimation period). I have a feeling this will be the same fate with CUE though updates will help clean up the system and make it at least a mentionable alternative to I-Drive.

and here's the link to my item on the 328i (a 2012 model)

So bmwblog says the best way to understand a Cadillac ATS is to experience it for oneself.... all that effort in reading the article went to waste..... hahah jk

Re: BMWBLOG Test Drive: 2013 Cadillac ATS 2.0t

I just test drove the BMW 3 and the ATS. It felt as though the BMW was very plain and was devoid of any character on the inside. I was very disappointed that it looked like the 1984 318i I had in the early 1990s. I wondered what was the big attraction with BMW. Perhaps it is the name and logo that people like. Whatever the reason, I took it back and told the sales rep that the car was plain, unattractive and overpriced. Seriously, if you took the logo and name off the car, the price would drop by thousands.
I tested the ATS and found it very attractive and very appealing. It had a lot of character and was beautifully designed on the inside. The same could be said on the outside and in my opinion is world ahead of the BMW in terms of comfort and styling. Plus with the thousands I will save on the Ats over the BMW, I can put it into my boys college fund so he can major in engineering and work on the 2034 Cadillac ATS.

That is an impressive article for Cadillac coming from the conversation around an enemy's campfire.

One of the best reviews I've seen for the ATS and it came from a BMW forum. I really like when people are true car enthusiasts even if they are attached to a particular brand, we all are. Although I'm a GM and Ford guy first, I have a soft spot for BMWs and this article actually helps grow that sentiment. Good job!
