Like the current STS, CTS and XLR. They all have the same plain slab sided look that is so blah. The DTS at least looks more impressive with it's bold grille, chrome bodyside molding and character line and flashy chrome wheels. When I see a STS I yawn. When I hear the alphanumeric names I yawn. Bring back the real names and save the numbers and letters for the Asian cars.

Alpha-numeric nomenclature started with the Europeans. Even the Asian brands copied.

I believe Cadillac should stick to one naming scheme and be done with it.
Right now, they have the 3-letter designation + "4" to designate AWD... and the Escalade nomenclature, which is just Escalade or Escalade + 3 leter designation... but no "4" to designate AWD.

And there's no way to tell if the STS is an STS V6 or STS V8 without looking under the hood. There should be a numeric component too.
STS 2.8; STS 3.6; STS4 3.6; STS 4.6; STS4 4.6; STS-V 4.4

And now rumors are "Fleetwood" is being resurrected.
It's a complete mess.

Hi mgescuro,

When I was at my Cadillac Saab dealership earlier this year, the STS shows STS4 for AWD or STS for RWD and for powerplant designation, Northstar V8 uses a Northstar V8 plate. Base V6 3.6 engine is blank and Direct Injection V6 uses a DI V6 plate. I agree a designation for 3.6, 3.6 DI, 4.6, 4.4 SC and so on could work.

The Northstar plate was useful when Northstar was the cornerstone of Cadillac marketing. Now that it is now, it's all but useless. And now what happens when Northstar is retired? Will there be an "UltraV8" plate?
Best to go with a number designation with the 3-letter Cadillac names.

Re: AutoNews: GM Wants Global Cadillac Look

I am not a huge fan of the 3 letter names, but they are OK. My bigger annoyance is that all the competition have some sorta numbering in the name that atleast hints at the engine size of their vehicles. Audi doesn't have it directly in the name, but does usually atleast have an engine identifier of some sorts usually. The new CTS has a DI version car badging and Northstar cars still get that badge, but really I think they need to add 3.6, 3.6DI, 2.9D and whatever badging. Another thing that would be neat would be for the TS and LS suffixes to differentiate which cars have which suspension packages rather than this FE this and FE that stuff that is basically and enigma when shopping the cars at the dealer and will only become worse as they become shopped as used cars. It could also help the more popular configurations of the car stand out and hold value better as they age.

It is nice to look at a Bimmer and read 530i and know exactly what is in that car.

You look at a CTS or STS and you don't have a clue.

Fleetwood huh?

BTS (Compact)
CTS (Mid Size)
DTS (Full Size)
FTS/ETC (Personal Limo)
sounds goo to me

Hi mgescuro,

I am ok with either designation. I like the number designation with the 3-letter Cadillac names, I agree.

Some luxury buyers like myself will only purchase V8 powerplants or higher. I have driven the 2008 STS V6 DI and it moves well, very sweet combination for those wanting the STS, but I still prefer the STS V8 and STS-V for my requirements.
