2008 Cadillac Escalade goes on sale in China, priced at about $149,000

2008 Cadillac Escalade goes on sale in China, priced at about $149,000
By Ally From:Gasgoo.com October 31 2007

Shanghai. October 31 (Gasgoo.com) -Shanghai General Motors (Shanghai GM) announced today that it will start to sell 2008 Cadillac Escalade at dealerships in China starting today. The vehicle will be priced at about1.12 million yuan ($149,843).

Since the second generation Cadillac Escalade went on sale in Chinese market last July, some 350 vehicles have been sold and new orders have been increasing continuously, Shanghai GM said.

This third generation features more personalized equipments compared with the previous versions and has made refinements from its maneuverability to its build and materials quality.
Edmunds reported that this SUV vehicle is generously proportioned inside and out and has a bold and angular face, exaggerated wreath-and-crest badging and chrome trim.

I wonder how long it will take for someone to release an Escalade clone.

Oh God... if they upgraded the interior for China... I'm gonna...

For comparison's sake, the top SLS sells for about $92,000.

The old Escalade wasn't sold in China, was it? Those poor Chinese... not knowing what it's like to drive a massive luxury SUV.

Hi mgescuro,

For a list price of $149,000, I would not think it is a standard Escalade. In an article I read on the success of Cadillac China group, they commented but did not show the Cadillac Escalade they were developing for the chauffeur market similar to the SLS. I would suspect the Escalade in China will be upgraded for this market.

Try to keep some hair on your head.

Well the SLS is built in China. It sounds as though the Escalade will be imported. For some reason, I think we'd know if some dressed up Escalades were coming off the line in Arlington.

At $149,000, that's about 3x the price of an Escalade. Even if it was the PE version, that would still be about 2x the price. Even with import taxes, I'm not sure how you'd get up to $149,000 without significant upgrades.

My hair is already falling out.
So the Escalade will be for the chauffeur market as well? I think that's a good selection for the Escalade. But I don't think my heart can take seeing the potential upgrades for the Chinese Escalade. haha

mgescuro,

I hear what you are saying, but I see custom Esclades's all the time in the NY/NJ/CT area, very common along with Cadillac's standard issue. If fact I understand the Escalade is one of the most customized models out here. I am not a SUV or truck fan so it is lost on me, but I can understand the custom bug.

Nah dont think there is any significant upgrades, the price may have something to do with the import tax/other tax, and the tax is likely to be based on the engine displacement

http://www.cadillac.com.cn/gallery.asp?model=escalade

Feels like GM is overpricing it for no reason, a Navigator is RMB 738,000
Porsche Cayenne S cost RMB 1,050,000
A Range Rover cost around RMB 995,000 - RMB 1,260,000
A Hummer H2 cost around RMB 1,050,000
H3 around RMB 800,000

BUT then sometimes people dont really care about the price of the car, they just people to know that their car is expensive and they are rich (especially in China)

Flashback to ECON 101:

Price is not a function of cost, rather it is a function of supply and demand.

Yeah... I looked at the site earlier in the evening, but it was taking forever to load. Much to my relief, it doesn't look upgraded. (Or GM just recycled the pictures.)

That's the point of a luxury car, is it not? The image it portrays?
I'm rich... I can afford this car... Get out of my way and don't touch the car...

Saw a nice Black one on display in the Beijing aorport this summer. People were very interested in it. Taking pictures with it, they seemed to like it.
