Seems that direct injection, high compression, variable valve timing, sophisticated electronic controls, and ten-spd auto trans is not quite flexible enough to get you both lots of hp AND lots of MPG.

One has to remember, this is based on their test loop and in some cases real world fuel economy can differ greatly......

For example in one real world test the GM full size truck with a 5.3L V-8 got the same fuel economy as one with the 6.2L V-8 despite the 5.3L beating it on ratings (the 6.2L gets better fuel economy then the EPA rating suggest). Also in one test the F-150 with the 5.0L V-8 got the same fuel economy as the EB 3.5 engine.......

Hmmmmm, interesting.

Kinda' 'figured' both (AT City / Highway ) would be @ or perhaps a little above Challenger / Hellcat across the ratings rather than @, or below.

Don't know about you guys but I'm pretty psyched about the 47.9K MSRP fully loaded!

One of the foibles of a a performance tuned forced induction engine being tested under EPA drive cycles.
I suspect that this was one of the original aims of the testing - to identify those vehicles that use a lot
more fuel and force manufacturers to limit volumes by making them exclusive (high price).

I think that's why most people are surprised. No one thinks a 600+ hp car is going to get great mileage and those that are buying it could probably care less but the comparison to a car that it should do better than and doesn't is a little baffling. That and the auto doing worse than the manual only adds to the unusual results.

Yeah, that's kinda' it.

Do not know it for a fact in any way or form, but some of this 10 Speed AT 'surprise' may involve extra TC losses plus certain extra Gearbox / Geartrain losses.

As far as RWD / MPGs go, a ZF 8HP Gen 2 or Gen 1 even, is very tough to beat or even match. So far, seems impossible with another CAT regardless of the number of Gears / Steps in whatever CAT type Geartrain. Certain types of DCTS eh, maybe.......

ZF did intimate almost a decade ago........ this was kinda' what you could expect.

And Tires losses .... probably in more than one way.

We need a bunch more info......

.......................2017 Camaro 6.2 S/C 10AT 15 - 12 - 20
2017 Challenger SRT ( Hellcat ) 6.2 S/C 8AT 16 - 13 - 22

____

Even the MTs are somewhat surprising although far far less so.

Camaro essentially ends up a type of 'rated' tie .... and behind on Highway ( while ahead on City ) But really not by much, and also eh, somewhat less ? than expected. Highway is just flat out strange, and City being higher by 'just' 1 is also perhaps weird ...... in a different way.

.........................2017 Camaro 6.2 S/C 6MT 16 - 14 - 20
2017 Challenger SRT ( Hellcat ) 6.2 S/C 6MT 16 - 13 - 21

Challenger appears so MPG disadvantaged in so many ways..... you end wondering about what we do not 'appreciate' the same way about Camaro.

IF you go grab the rest of the V8 and other listings for both and 'compare', seems there is this thing that keeps happening that pulls Camaro somehow ever lower in a relative sense versus comparable Challengers as you move 'up' the Camaro PT offerings.

( We must always remember there is a bunch of both rounding and 'ranging' with these estimates. )

That in a WAG kinda' way suggests 'generically' looking into Aero and Tires and Final Drives - and what if any 'optional equipment' has to be included for each etc, but by the time you get to the S/C 6.2s.....seems.... that that may not be able to cover it all.

And arguably, the normally aspirated 6.4 Challengers versus the normally aspirated 6.2 Camaros seem off as well.

Seems possibly more explainable though.

Come to think of it, does Hellcat 6.2 S/C have MDS ? Can not remember.....but even if so ......

Keep in mind that the HC 6.2 is considered "Outdated" by many. but manages to get better mileage, real world numbers had the HC's at 24MPG Hwy (not sure about combined).

also keep in mind that this ZL1 has areo that produces a lot of Drag for the wrong reasons... This shouldn't be a canyon carver, the ZL1 should have been what the Hellcat is, The most powerful Camaro built for the Strip/street. (unless the ZL1 replaces the Z28 this generation). replace spoiler with ducktail, get rid of the hood that creates downforce, replace front splitter with a smaller one) that would improve the Mileage.
