DETROIT – For the all-new, 2016 Chevrolet Camaro, the team was challenged to improve the handling, acceleration and fuel economy of the award-winning current model.

To meet all three objectives, the team focused on a singular mission: reduce mass. By obsessively searching for opportunities to save ounces, the team pared more than 200 pounds off the Camaro compared with the fifth-generation model.

As a result, the Camaro does more with less, according to Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer:

“We kept the cornering confidence and control that make the Gen 5 Camaro 1LE so fun to drive, and added a greater sense of agility,” he said. “The new Camaro brakes harder, flicks into corners more quickly, and drives out of the corner faster. We expect it will set the benchmark in the segment and give many sports cars a challenge.”

A new architecture, one of the most mass-efficient ever from General Motors, is responsible for much of the weight savings.

Additionally, dozens of small changes cumulatively contributed to shedding pounds. For example, the beam that supports the instrument panel is now made of aluminum, saving 9.7 pounds (4.4 kg) over the steel beam on the current generation Camaro.

In addition, the front and rear suspension assemblies are now aluminum, and links on some models feature an intricate, structurally optimized design made with a rigid composite material that’s even lighter than aluminum. As a result, the total weight for the suspension is 21 percent lighter compared to current steel-intensive assemblies.

Chevrolet will introduce the all-new 2016 Camaro on Saturday, May 16, during a special public event at Detroit’s Belle Isle Park.

Unless I'm mistaken, that means Camaro and Mustang will weight about the same!
Yup. 1SS and GT Coupe will be right at 3700lbs. Will depend on how much more than 200lbs they were able to shave off.

I can't wait to drive this. I enjoyed my 5th gen, but the weight was always obviously there. If the 6th has a ride anything like the ATS, it's going to be just awesome.

That chassis in the ATS feels so light, as does the CTS. Those cars just glide. While the weight number may not look like it will make that much of a difference, I expect the 6th gen to feel much more agile.

DONT YOU WORRY!.

We here in the Stickers & Tape department are hard at work on snazzy new "decals" to make the special edition of your vehicle even more stand-outish from the rest of the plebeian herd!.

You've seen us work our magic on the many different exciting versions of the Silverado and Sierra!,the Colorado "Trail Boss",the"Tuscan" flavored Buick Enclave!. We even created a classy package for the CTS!: "Midnight Editon" complete with an pro-active style that will make people think "Why name that package that?!"...Why? because we're BOLD!.

As you will see in time the 6th gen Camaro will not escape our touch. You want a "IROC" Camaro?! We have stickers for that! You want a "Daytona Special Edition" pace car replica?! We have BOTH sticker and tape for that!.... If we didn't we would be GM's premier dept aptly named "The Sticker & Tape Department" A sticker we wear proudly on our taped chests!.

---Cheers!---

One would hope so with the move to Alpha.

Imagine the additional weight savings of the future Z/28. It could go head to head with 911 GT3 and that wont be an overstatement.

Re: 2016 Camaro Does More with Less New model is at least 200 pounds lighter than cur

I read it as model for model the 2016 will be at least 200 pounds lighter then for the 2016 model then the 2015 model. Here are the base weight (no options) weight for the 2015 Mustang

V-6 manual: 3,526 pounds
Ecoboost manual: 3,532 pounds
GT manual: 3,705 pounds

Based on at least 200 pounds lighter base weight for 2016 Camaro (no options weight).

V-6: 3,519 pounds
SS: 3,735 pounds
ZL1: 3,920 pounds
Z/28: 3,620 pounds

However it is important to note that while options generally add weight, they sometimes reduce weight depending on the nature of those options. For example while a base 1SS is 3,935 pounds a no option 1LE 1SS was weighed by Motor Trend and came in at 3,886 pounds which is 49 pounds lighter. Part of the weight drop was from the wheels and tires used on the 1LE, however if the 1LE 2016 follows this then this would suggest 3,686 pounds for that model.

What confuses people is when they see car mags putting fully loaded or near fully loaded cars on scales. If you put a fully loaded 2016 SS Camaro on a scale and compare that to the 3,886 pound weight of a no option 1LE gives the impression that the 200 pound weight loss was a lie.

Recent comparo of a GT track pack vs a 1LE put the two within like 50-75lbs of eachother. If the Camaro does drop 200lbs, it will be 100-125lbs lighter than the Mustang. The 2015 Mustang picked up a bit of weight over the 2014 Mustang.

Re: 2016 Camaro Does More with Less New model is at least 200 pounds lighter than cur

I fully expect the mustang and camaro to weig about the same...

I would have hoped for a slightly smaller 6 th gen camaro SS based off the ATS /CTS chassis...

The recent mustang is or at least appears to be about the same size as the previous generation...

I think smaller around a BMW m4 size and weight might have been better for the LT1 powered camaro to compete with the worlds best...z(owners chatting)
