2016: Camaro vs Mustang vs Barracuda.

Smaller, lighter, Camaros and Mustangs are on the way, but also, reportedly, a smaller, lighter replacement for the Challenger, the Chrysler/Dodge Barracuda. A final decision on whether it will be marketed as a Dodge or Chrysler is still unkown, but the car itself was reportedly greenlighted in late 2011.

The story goes.....that the current Challenger will carry on without any further investments through 2013/14. Then in the 2014/15 time frame a smaller replacement for the Challenger, based on Fiat's CUSW, (Compact US Wide), architecture, will spawn a family of smaller RWD cars. The CUSW is the architecture used on the new Dodge Dart, BTW. It is reportedly flexible enough to be configured in FWD, AWD and RWD. It's been called CUSW+ for the Barracuda. Expect the usual turbo4/V6 engines......but sources have also said that several new versions of the Hemi 6.4L, V8 engine will be available.

The Pony Car wars are about to get VERY hot!

Pony Car: an affordable, compact, highly styled car with a sporty or performance-oriented image and an available V8.

This does overall sound very promising. The pony cars are going back down close to their original sizes and intention. I have always thought the the current Camaro has been bordering on "bloated". And the the Challenger is just plain oversize, just a few more inches and it could almost be a Dodge Mirada.

Though in this mix, what will happen to the 130R (if produced)? Will it be seen as a pony car wannabe?

Something tells me it's AWD basis towards RWD, not actual RWD. AWD coupe that behaves as if it was RWD could own a niche.

I really like the Challenger name over the Barracuda name, wish they would reconsider and stay with Challenger...not to mention I'd love to see an evolution of the styling the the Challenger, not something totally new.

Reportedly, it can accommodate FWD, RWD or AWD/FWD or AWD/RWD.

It gives me flashbacks to all the Epsilon II BS on how it can be RWD/AWD/FWD. Remember all that BS?

Well, that Epsilon talk was total and complete BS. This, from the sound of it, is not. In addition to the Barracuda, Alfa Romeo will be using the CUSW+ for some RWD products.

The LH's could have been turned into RWD. The powertrains for example, were mounted north/south.
