Re: Upcoming Recall/07035 97-03 GP & Regal 3800 S/C vin 1

My 2000 Buick Regal GS has had the front valve cover gasket replaced already. I still get heavy smoking after heavy acceleration, followed by extended idling in city traffic. Since the recall does not cover the rear valve cover gasket replacement, is there a step-by-step instructions similar to the great pictorial instructions for the front gasket repacement?

I am one of the 267 car owners. My car burned January 10, 2008. Do you think GM is planning on compensating the owners for their loss? I have a feeling that they new about this problem before now.

I'm sorry to hear about your car going up in flames last January. And no, I don't think GM is planning on compensating owners for their loss. What bothers me is that only NOW they are warning owners not to park their cars in garages. Why couldn't they have issued that warning months ago? This recall is probably going to cost GM dearly, a loss they can ill afford at this time.

As a proud owner of a 1940 Pontiac Deluxe 6, a 1997 GTP, a 2005 Bonneville and the former owner of another 1997 GTP that had an engine fire; what are my options for obtaining anything from GM for the loss associated with the GTP engine fire? Granted my insurance company paid me "Book Value" for the car when it was totaled, but the car was worth more to me then "Book". I couldn't replace it for what I was given by the insurance company and get something that was in as good of shape as my '97 GTP was.
Shouldn't GM be responsible to pay my insurance company for their loss and additionally pay me for my losses.
Just a side comment. You have never seen so many people trying to push a burning car from out under a banks drive-thru canopy as we did this day. The bank employees were terrified, to say the least.

Re: Upcoming Recall/07035 97-03 GP & Regal 3800 S/C vin 1

My car is experiencing this problem so I want to get it fixed ASAP. Oil leaks from the valve cover gasket onto the exhaust manifold and causes smoke. I called my local dealer and they said that they do not have any details on this recall yet. He looked my VIN up in VIS and there were no recalls on it. (Obviously.) I read off the following part about the TSB and he could not find it in the computer system. Does anyone have any ideas why?

I found the TSB, they need to do a number search versus a vehicle search...I can't explain why they can't find it?????

Also, as posted in the original post....no record of your VIN being listed due to:GMVIS information will not be available for this recall until the recall bulletin is released to dealers

Re: Upcoming Recall/07035 97-03 GP & Regal 3800 S/C vin 1

Thanks for the information. I called a second dealership who only knew the information in the press release. He looked up the TSB and was able to find it. He said they already had 35-40 calls since Friday about it. He was going to checkin with his manager and possibly call GM to staighten things out. It sounds like either the dealers aren't reading their mail or GM isn't doing a very good job of getting this information out. God bless the internet. I'd rather not have my car catch on fire...

My 2000 Buick Regal GS went up in flames 2/7/2008 in my driveway - My insurance paid book value for it less my deductable - is GM going to reimburse for my deductable?

I'd ask your insurance company to go after them...

As for GM...you could inquire at your selling/servicing dealer...

I am also one of the 267 and I think one of the 17 structure fires that the NHTSA is reporting. Mine occured on 5/30/07. I am also wondering about the deductibles. I am out $1500 between the homeowners and car claims that I had to make. I have never been involved in anything like this, and I am not sure how it works. I am waiting to hear back from my insurance now, but I have no clue how long that will take. I have been told that I should contact a lawyer, but I am not sure that is the best way to go.

Here is what mine looked like:

Unhappy Re: Upcoming Recall/07035 97-03 GP & Regal 3800 S/C vin 1

I have 175,000 miles on my 02' GTP. The car has been great. I have noticed it running hotter lately (over 200 sometimes).

I was going to start using 89 octane. Guess I'll stay with the 93.

I'll start parking in the driveway.

If you posses a 99 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, Under the hood you have a 3.8L V-6 serries 3 engine.Check the Rocker Cover gasket to be sure there isnt any oil, make sure there isnt. if there is not ur ok. The rocker cover gaskets are no good in certain modles. i own an 02 bonneville SSEI supercharged has the same serries 3 engine you have in your 99 GTP, luckly we have no problmes but the gaskets are leaking and the oil is being thrown due to hard braking, under the heat shield,on to the exauhst manifold, which ignites the slow burning oil then catches the spark plug wires, just make sure there is no oil on the head under the rocker cover(valve cover).

Use your High octane always, you can try changing your oil,if its fine or not due change your coolant, if you already havnt done so, if your coolent is good and your oil is fine, chances are it could be your thermostat, if your car is under warrenty and burning hotter then 200 take it to GM for sure, The 3.8L is usually very good for low temperatures not very often does it get that hot unless your running the bag off it.
