Re: Pontiac name the G8 contest update (and a surprise)
I submitted Adelaide. I doubt it'll win though.
I'd consider purchasing one. Fun and useful (though I don't have much use for a pickup). The wagon would still be better.

Re: Pontiac name the G8 contest update (and a surprise)
I submitted the name the Pontiac Hauler. Imagine the marketing, a commercial showing the truck being loaded with a lot of stuff, then talks about its V8, and what does all this mean to you the announcer asks...
It not only hauls...it hauls! Comments please ![]() |

Re: Pontiac name the G8 contest update (and a surprise)
Based on their new slogan, how about calling it the Pontiac "Car" !

Then it fits the history of the brand better, and GM's performance division isn't stuck with yet another inappropriate model (like the Montana, Torrent, and G5). |

Re: Pontiac name the G8 contest update (and a surprise)
El Camino was originally a Cadillac name. Used on a 2 seater car in the 1954 Motorama. It was fiberglass bodied with a brushed stainless-steel top. The very same script/font was applied to the Chevy car/pickup in 1959. In 1937 Chevrolet offered their first fusion of car and truck. The Master Coupe offered an optional "coupe delivery", basically the trunk lid was removed and a short pick up styled box extended out of the trunk area out to just short of the rear bumper. Pontiac itself was originally a model name of the GM Oakland car company(1926). The Pontiac model out sold other Oaklands so quickly that GM changed the division name to Pontiac (1932). Pontiac also offered a 3/4 ton closed body truck based on its passenger car chassis. With a payload of 3470 lbs. this truck evolved into a GMC light duty truck, Model T-11 and T-15A, in the late 20's or early 30's.
Shakespeare said "What's in a name? Would not a rose by any other name smell as sweet?" (Romeo & Juliet). Shakespeare obviously wasn't involved directly in marketing, but he did manage to turn a good phrase or two. I think that bringing this new 'Ute' as a Chevy El Camino would make the most sense, but there are some historical precedents for Pontiac. The problem is that most people aren't aware of them. I think naming it the Pontiac Oakland might be kinda cool from a 'what goes around comes around' sort of way. But I would also think Pontiac Pannier Would be good (panniers are those racks and bag rigs used on pack horses/mules/donkeys). Name and branding is important, but supplying demand triumphs. I believe that there is a market for this type of vehicle. I hear it every time I show my 70 454 El Camino. The big wants are 1) rear wheel drive 2) good power 3) good looks. I think this car/truck has those. Bring it on! Last edited by 1.8millionmiler : 05-21-2008 at 04:48 AM. Reason: typos / extra info |

Re: Pontiac name the G8 contest update (and a suprise)
We'll see who's right in 2 years time; either it will have failed epicly like so many of you naysayers believe, or it will fill it's niche quick enough and move on to begin to dominate the light pickup truck market.
I'll be putting my money on world domination. |

I had a couple of goes before settling on Utility. Express after the Holden built Pontiac Ute in the '20s (Pontiac Express Delivery). Others advised me that the Express name is already used on a large Van. I then, half jokingly suggested Oakland Raider. A sub brand to pacify the naysayers that reckon anything trucklike has no place as a Pontiac. So, I was interested to see you suggest Oakland. Picture of the Australian Pontiac Ute. ![]()

Re: Pontiac name the G8 contest update (and a surprise)
Thanks for the photo of the Pontiac express. I knew of the truck but had never seen a photo.
You heard right about Express on full size and even some P chassis GM vans. I like the Oakland Raider. How many would get it though? I am amazed at how many GM fans are unaware of the importance of various overseas divisions at GM, or how far back some of these divisions go. Holden goes back a long way with the General, just like Opel. Obviously the 2 way information flow and long time have brought forward a harmony and good development on both sides. The reason the El Camino faded away (they continued to build them in Mexico for South America after they stopped here) was the advent of the mini trucks. I think this rig would sell again now because nobody offers a popular mini truck here, except Subaru, and it's too mini (and not that popular). S-10 series, Toyota, Nissan, Ford Ranger all went chasing the midsize success of the Dodge Dakota. Dodge built the Dakota because they couldn't compete with the aforementioned group. They succeeded because it was a niche market, and the second generation styling was beautiful. The truck was mediocre. The payload and towing capacity of this Holden/Pontiac Ute is as good as the mini trucks that killed the El Camino with once again the comfort and ride of a car chassis. The Dakota niche became the norm, the old norm is now a niche with no filler available. I don't know if I would buy another new vehicle ( I have 9 vehicles now, 1 Dodge MH chassis, 1 Willys Overland - all others are GM) but there are only 3 candidates - Corvette, this new Pontiac or a Hummer. current rides; 1959 Chev Bel-Air (First car - my dad bought new when I was almost 5, I gave him $225 for it when I was in high school - 1971) 1967 Olds 442 1970 El Camino 454 SS 1987 Olds 442 (bought new - has 567K miles now) 1987 Corvette Roadster 1990 Pontiac Firebird 1980 GMC C-3500 High Sierra 1950 Willys Overland Jeepster Runabout (Needs restored) 1978 Dodge/Beaver MH |
