Re: Confirmed: Renault-Nissan killed Saturn

Saturn sold just over 1,300 vehicles nationwide last month. That had to also weigh heavily on Penske's decision.

Re: Confirmed: Renault-Nissan killed Saturn

its sad that saturns retailers wanted to buy the brand and get a backer, then penske wanted in and f'd it all up. talks shouldn't have dragged out as long as they did if he didn't have a firm commitment from renault-nissan to provide cars. also if he didn't why didn't he have a back up supplier. either way penske walks away squeekey clean and thousands of people are now out of work.

Re: Confirmed: Renault-Nissan killed Saturn

Just a supposition then I post, maybe R-N isn't interested in Saturn a lot. There might be more interested to a bigger target....even if "Captain Kirk" is out of the picture now.
I digged the archives to find a old post

Bingo, exactly: why the heck would Nissan want to feed product to a US competitor?

Ummm, they didn't kill it so much as they let it die. Criminal neglect? Yes. But not murder.

Probably the saddest episode in the whole downward spiral of GM. Despite itself, GM created what was briefly the hottest car brand on earth - based not on particularly great cars, but based on good feelings. It was an extraordinary accomplishment.

And then they succeeded in letting it die. They did just about everything wrong in destroying that great brand. Letting the cars languish. Allowing their uniqueness to fade.

Imagine if the original Saturn had been subject to a continuous improvement program. Imagine if they'd managed to keep up the UAW agreement. Imagine if they had taken Saturn off into a 'socially responsible/green' direction.

But somehow it wasn't in GM to do anything but grind all those good feelings into dust on its heavy heel.

It's BS to attempt to paint Penske as the bad player. What exactly is preventing the Saturn dealers from proceeding with their plan, now that Penske has dropped its plan?

Re: Confirmed: Renault-Nissan killed Saturn

BINGO. NISSAN KILLED IT.

In order for it to work, had to be a company that doesn't compete in the US or have ties to the US. And it needs to be a reputable company. I don't think such an auto company exists.

Why Nissan would want to build for a Competitor I would never understand.
