And once again prove they know nothing about cars.

The following quote should tell you something:

Quote:
The lack of a redline on the speedometer makes manual shifting a guessing game.

They need to drive a Skyline, which Jeremy Clarkston dubbed a "xxx,000 pound [sterling] Playstation"

Gotta love these idiots. At the bottom of the web page they list similar products and some how the Toyota Corolla is on there. WTF.

It actually makes sense in the context of the following paragraph:

Quote:
As the tachometer passed 6,000rpm, we made ready to shift, but before we could do it, the car bogged down as we hit redline, forcing an engine cutoff. The lack of a redline marking on the tachometer made it difficult to judge when to shift. We went through with the run, but that over-revving slowed us down to 6.75 seconds to 60 mph.

We gave it another try, figuring we would have to shift before 6,000rpm, but we were too careful, and only made 6.72 seconds to 60 mph on the second run. Figuring the automatic mode could do a better job, we called the test complete. The times this car made were impressive, and we also found it interesting that manual shift mode lets you run over the redline, as most automatics will upshift once you hit a certain engine speed even if you put it in manual mode.
If they would have said "tachometer"...

Toyota Corolla a similar product, yeah right. That's almost as stupid as them dinging the car's fuel economy. People buy this car to go fast, and they don't give a damn about fuel mileage. Some people just don't get it.

Can someone on this forum who's actually a cnet forum member log on and tell those idiots that its the tachometer that's supposed to have a redline, and not the speedometer?

My God, cnet is an embarassment.

You need a "young" avatar of Mr. Francis Albert Sinatra.

In the article they correctly say "tachometer" twice. Under the photo of the G8's dash guages it says "speedometer" in the copy.

Clearly this isn't great journalism but I think there was some constructive criticism. While the Cnet geeks are over the top in their demands for more technology in the cabin it is a valid point. GM needs to stop trying to push people to On-Star navigation and offer the normal in dash GPS units. Regardless of how any of us personally feel about this stuff, consumers want it. GM's job is to give it to them and take their money for it. Pretty straightforward.

Not at all. CNET.com's primary interest is technology. Its review skews toward readers who are interested in the technology included in their cars. Nothing in the review plows any ground that hasn't been already plowed elsewhere on this site.

By all indications, Pontiac agrees with CNET. It has already announced that the 2009 G8 will fix most of the technology deficiencies identified by CNET.

That's a good catch. So the people who wrote the article probably have more sense than they are given credit for here. But the "nerd" who wrote the caption to the photo, obviously isn't a car guy.

Its 361 horsepower is substantial, but doesn't really compare with the 400-plus horsepower some automakers, such as BMW, squeeze out of lower displacement engines.
WHO CARES what the specific displacement of an engine is...I would take a OHV V8 making 360 hp anyday over a DOHC engine making 360 hp. Hearing this reminds me of the import lovers who only care about how much power they can get out of tiny 1.5 liter engines.
