BPG Exec thinks Pontiac is a good fit for a Volt-clone

SOURCE: Popular Mechanics

Quote:
But officials from the General were hopeful at a meeting here yesterday. Susan Docherty, GM's North American vice president of Buick, Pontiac and GMC, even suggested that if one of her three brands were to get its own version of the upcoming Chevrolet Volt, it would almost certainly be Pontiac.

"My personal take: I think [the Volt] would make a great Pontiac," Docherty told PM. "What greater brand than Pontiac to charge ahead with that technology?"
Quote:
GM is attempting to limit the overlap of vehicles within the company. So a Pontiac version of the Volt would have to stand apart. Our best guess? Since Pontiac is GM's most youthful and sporty brand, its version of the range-extended plug-in hybrid would need to have responsive handling, quicker acceleration and its very own—and very striking—exterior design.

Pontiac, no, Pontiac should not get an E-Flex, give them a RWD 2-Mode to help acceleration.

I do not remember who said it, but a Buick Electra makes more sense. The name is already there.

Re: BPG Exec thinks Pontiac is a good fit for a Volt-clone

Good god.....it seems like these idiots never learn!

First it's a return to the same FWD garbage that put them down in the gutter in the last two decades..........now it's more of the misguided belief that "we could do great things if you just let us clone___________"

Does anyone honestly expect a Pontiac version of the Volt would be that much different??

Re: BPG Exec thinks Pontiac is a good fit for a Volt-clone

I have no problem with this eventually if it's in a unique-looking vehicle, but not until Caddy and Buick have their own E-Flex vehicles. Pontiac is getting an Aveo-clone G3... what more do they need?!?

I like it! It's the perfect place for it in the GM lineup.

My personal take: I think GM should fire Susan Docherty.

I totally agree. What's wrong with getting people in the showroom for a different kind of Pontiac and a gas saver at that? IMO it'll probably look better than the Chevy version, anyway.

I think the problem is that there are too many different kinds of Pontiacs.

GM needs to stop giving Pontiac random vehicles.

Unless a-bunch-o'-cars is what GM has in store for the brand.

Re: BPG Exec thinks Pontiac is a good fit for a Volt-clone

it depends......

it can go to pontiac only if it is designed with performance in mind and mpg second. since electric has insta-torque and e85 is 100 octane, that would bode very well for a performance car. and it cannot, cannot look like the volt in any way- it needs to be completely new and different looking. call it the pontiac charge or something.

buick can get one, as long as it too looks completely different (and im not talking lambda different) and it feels like a buick. tad upscale, floaty, etc.

cadillac can have one too, but once again, it must look completely and feel completely different.

spreading the drivetrain across brands will help bring down the price as well. for once gm's diversity can be a great advantage.

Interesting idea. As long as it's not a Volt with twin grilles and a red dart slapped on, it'll be fine.

Re: BPG Exec thinks Pontiac is a good fit for a Volt-clone

All yall need to keep in mind that Eflex is a drivetrain that will be used across the board in all division (like the ICE) in different vehicles. Just because it will be a pontiac doesn't necessarilly mean it will be a rebadge. No one knows what they are going to do for sure at this point. I say get E-flex in as many GMs as they can!

Agreed. I say they should go as far as sticking it in a crossover, maybe an E-Flex Equinox. The only problem would be where to put the batteries.

If it gets shared, especially w/ pontiac, it better NOT be a Volt clone.
