Your Mileage May Vary: Cruze Diesel Gets 56.1 MPG AVG; 3367 Miles

    Fuelly.com
    May 8, 2017

The single reporting owner of a new Cruze 1.6L diesel at the consumer site "Fuelly.com" is reporting an average of 56.1 miles per gallon with a total driven miles figure of 3,367.

What does this mean? Not much. One car (manual transmission), one owner.

But it is a promising start. If accurate, 56.1 miles per gallon is quite a figure.

From Car and Driver concerning a 2017 Cruze Sedan Diesel / 9AT -

" Naturally, fuel economy is a crucial metric. It’s up, according to both the EPA and our tests. The government rates it at 37 mpg combined—a 5-mpg bump from the previous Cruze diesel—with either transmission, and our overall average matched that impressive number.

In our real-world, 75-mph highway loop, the Cruze achieved a remarkable 52 mpg, 6 mpg better than a Toyota Prius and about 10 percent better than the EPA’s 47-mpg highway rating.

If it’s similarly overachieving, the manual Cruze diesel might do better still, given its 52-mpg EPA highway rating. Long-haul drivers take note: 700-mile stints between fill-ups are definitely within reach. "

Great news. But GM will screw it up with over-priced models. A TDI Terrain will cost over 40K.
GM needs to wake up and get the TDI in the Trax/Encore! Then I'll put my money down.

And while they're at it put the 1.5T in the Cruze.

This will be impressive if these sort of reports continue to rack up. I also think they should put this engine in the Encore and Trax as well.

If these cars are bought by people who drive a lot, it makes sense to have them be high content models

I think there are a lot of people who get mileage and are looking to pocket as much money as possible. I have a buddy who always buys the cheapest of the cheap so his mileage rate can cover his payment on his work car.

Fuel costs more and so does the engine.
It will take a while to recoup costs.

Someone did the math on the Car and Driver comments.

Three years is what most people will see as the "recoup" costs if you drive 25k miles a year. Not as bad as some would like you to think. Plus, people always forget about resale value of a diesel like the price premium doesn't exist.

Re: Your Mileage May Vary: Cruze Diesel Gets 56.1 MPG AVG; 3367 Miles

If it proves reliable, I'd definitely consider one of these. I've driven the new Cruze (a Hatch) and I found the seats more comfortable over a longer drive compared to mine. That is one of my bigger complaints of my own Cruze. I'd love to have a diesel if the cost was too high. They really should put this in the Malibu, I really love those new ones. I've rented one for a long day with a lot of miles and had one as a loander car overnight. Loved both of them. Nearly as good of fuel economy as my Cruze Eco MT, bigger, roomier, and nice driving.

All my diesel experiences have been pretty positive, I think I'd like owning one someday. We'll see.

Yes, they should. And the best thing is, it's already done.

I'm a little bit disappointed that Chevrolet only offer the 136hp version of the 1.6TD. I was hoping for something like this:

    base trim-level: 1.6 TD 110hp
    everything else: 1.6 TD 136hp
top trim-level only: 1.6 BI-TD 160hp, for those who want the FE of a diesel engine, combined with the speed of the 1.4 turbo

This augers well for GM in convincing people to buy a baby 1,5 TD, especially in Equinox where
the fuel economy should really impress and the cost of the diesel can be more easily justified...
