Re: Volt Concept styling won't make it into production
With a car like the Volt you just can't ignore the aerodynamics, and it will be a higher priority than styling. So the car will end up looking like all the other aerodynamic cars (like the prius) where the engineers just put a piece of clay in the wind tunnel, put it on full blast and whatever comes out goes
![]() Very aerodynamic cars are often VERY ugly. Now if GM's designers are any good, then they will be able to craft something that is beautiful, and aerodynamic (functional), and that is their ultimate job as designers. Designers aren't called stylists anymore for a reason, because good design must go down all the way to the product. There is a 90% chance the Volt will end up looking like the Prius, that is, ugly/bland, weird, disappointing, simply because physics will be at war with the designers. Re: Volt Concept styling won't make it into production
Once again, did anyone actually listen to the interview with Bob Boniface? There's a separate design studio working on this and I believe GM knows full well what's at stake. Just because the wind tunnel didn't like the concept doesn't automatically mean we're going to get something boring or a Prius clone.

when you plug in a certain C of D,coefficient of drag, into a computer the shapes are all going to be the same

Good, even though it looked cool, it would not sell to baby-boomers; the one's that can afford it and just have to be fashionable.

You know, to be honest I never thought the Volt was all that great. The front end especially was bland and ugly. I feel bad for the designer though. I wonder if Boniface will design the production version too.

Re: Volt Concept styling won't make it into production
I know a lot of you think that the powertrain is more important than styling, and I agree to a certain extent. The thing is though, Chevy has the chance to not just hit a home run, but a grand slam. Look at the Prius - if you can do it without hurting your eyes. As neat as it may be to have a car with great gas mileage, I don't know of many people that don't laugh at the looks of the car. It's ugly as sin. Looks are subjective, but when I think it comes to that car, the opinion is 95% universal.
If Chevrolet can produce a car that not only has great gas mileage, but also appeals to a wide variety of people with its looks, the game can be changed forever. Priced right (which is another big "if"), who knows how many sales they could be looking at. I guarantee it would be THE car from GM that would finally bring in a large chunk of import buyers - because no matter their negative opinion of the company, most people would quickly ignore that for the chance to drive a car they could fill with gas and go for weeks. |
