I honestly feel that the choice to not put direct injection on the 1.4L turbo motor is dumb because its not the base model engine anyways so if it added a few more bucks to that engine it wouldn't add anything to the cost to get into a Cruze.

it seems to be a relative thing.
It depends on the weight of the car. The Civic is lighter so 140hp is not as bad as in the heavier Cruze. That engine is getting dumped on in Europe, where slow but good MPG is acceptable. GM was supposedly taking the time to get it here to fix any issues. They obviously haven't done that.
New GM=Old GM
It's really disgusting, IMO

All this discussion merely avoids the real issue. The GM Family I engines are Turkeys from top to bottom. When and/or if GM has a spare nickel it needs to design a new replacement for the the 1.4+liter to 1.9-liter "Family I" engine Family. It detrimentally affects all their small cars.

It needs to be all-alloy, DOHC, 4-valve, VVT/VVL, electronic throttle, DI chain cam-drive, capable of HCCI, and designed to handle higher pressures for turbocharging or semi-diesel operation.

Thats what shoyuld have happened right now. What happened to all new GM cars being world class? That 1.8L engine is a POS. It shouldn't be anywhere near this car.
