The interesting thing is there is a voltage sensor, if the voltage is too low, say from the air running, the stop/start operation will not be attempted. In the 100 miles they had the car, it only shut itself off two or three times. The rest of the time there was apparently too much power draw so the motor didn't shut down. This sounds like something that can be used to scam the mileage numbers, but not very useful in real worl driving.
Why haven't seen a review of the 2014 Malibu ? They had one of the 2014 Regal but not the Malibu. The Malibu is the bread and butter car of Chevrolet. Folks its not the new Impala, its the Malibu. I want to hear what they say about the improved back seat room, the revised interior, the revised engines etc etc. Nick and Al when are you going to test drive one ??

    Good move.

If they want an ECO model, why not the new 1.6L Turbo with CVT?

Similar to the Cruze ECO "model" that seems to sell well enough and helps the Cruze overall.

Anyone know the "take rate" on Cruze ECO? I'd guess just under 20% and about 40% manual, but that is just my guess.

IMHO a true malibu eco would have the new 1.6T and an 8 speed automatic.....

Logo, Subaru, Impreza, AWD...trim, and PZEV?

Subaru's different like that though, they've also marketed putting more badges on for personalization by giving the "badges of ownership."

Yea, the PZEV is the one that took me for a little spin. Even I had to google what the heck that was. Im sure that Subaru is proud of that but a badge?

    Start-Stop will have its problems.

Yet it's used a lot. Time will tell.

It seems a smart move to drop the E assist model. I am not sure why they need to use the ECO name for the 2014. I do know that the 2014 Malibu would be high on my list of cars to shop If I could afford a new car right now.

Whoever is approving these launches has to go... the last Malibu launched with a 4 speed, and the 6 speed trickled down the line over YEARS, then this one debuts and we have a crap old eco drivetrain that hangs on for 2 years, and is finally replaced by a new standard engine that SHOULD have been in there from the get go... reminds me of the new pickups... HERE, brand new truck and engine, old trans.. wait, the 8 speed is coming!! WHAT?? Bet an ecotec3 engine is coming for the HDs in a few years too.. BAD: I was looking forward to maybe getting an HD 6.2, but no....

Figure it out GM, if it's all new, make it ALL new....

What is going to happen when Ford just updates one engine on the F150? Ram has done the trickle thing as well this generation.

GM was the first automaker to put a 6 speed into a midsized car. Kind of ridiculous to fault them for that.

Just that time again to ignore certain people. I'm certain they will continue to try and instigate and antagonize while throwing up their arms saying they did nothing but are here on a civil basis. Not worth the time seeing how some just seem to know all.

Maybe in the Malibu it's not very useful, but in the few non-GM cars I've driven with S-S technology the car shuts down at almost every traffic light. In the Honda there is a sport/normal/eco mode that seems to manuipulate the s-s as well; such as if it's in sport mode it doesn't use the s-s at all.

I'd say it works for the "awareness" image Subaru's always pushed. Not all of them had it, it was an option and still may be so it's something of a point of differentiation I suppose. Kind of like the flex-fuel badges that some automakers put on.

Think all the hybrid badges and decals GM put on the SUV hybrids still might take the cake even though those were spread over the car.

Well, done right, it can smooth over a product launch since you don't have both the bugs of a new design and a new powertrain all at once.

With examples like the Malibu, it did have new things, but it didn't make a significant improvement over the old while competitors did - even better than the old Eco drivetrain.

The fault was with how they rolled it out, after others had 5-speed autos for years by then and people were tired of seeing that brought up in review after review.

Think they were first for a 6AT on a four-cylinder, but not first overall in the segment. Mazda/Ford come to mind with the 2005 6s/2006 Fusion V6.

You are correct cpd. Iirc they were the first to have a full midsized car line 6 speed as well. GM is usually on the forefront with a lot of the things people complain about but they always forget the good things.

We had an 08 Malibu LTZ I4/A6 and it was a damn good combo. Much, much better than any other I4 at the time.

We are taking orders; do you want that with or without the ECO badge?
