Re: Report: Aveo Production Moving To Lordstown; Cobalt, Astra Production Goes To Me

So there is the
Chevy Cobalt
Saturn Astra
Pontiac G5
all built in Mexico?

And the
Chevy Aveo
Pontiac G3
and another small? rwd vehicle
built in Lordstown

Did I understand this correctly?
And what about the Saturn Corsa? I heard that may be built in the US. Sounds like another good candidate for Lordstown

That's essentially what the UAW contract said, although it mentioned platforms and divisions, not specific models.

If GM builds an Aveo or smaller sized car somewhere in the U.S. by 2010 or 2011, I guarantee I will buy it.

Great... Korean design, Mexican made. Sounds like my kind of compact. Why shouldn't I buy the Corolla again? You know, that American made car.

I'm hoping Lordstown gets a Cobalt replacement and it is just called something else. I also agree with whomever said the Aveo is too downmarket to get a turbo motor. The Cobalt would be perfect with a 1.4L DI turbo motor tuned specifically for fuel economy.
But that motor tuned for a bit of sportiness would be great for Pontiacs G3, might help at least justify why its at the sporty excitement division.

In my wildest dreams I didn't ever think they would build the next Aveo here. Maybe it will be a quality car now.

Sure it does. The 2010 model would be introduced in June or July of 2009, and go through the end of the year.

Serious question here... when was the last time Pontiac got a higher-performance version of a vehicle available at another division? And I'll agree that the G8 is a brilliant stand-alone in North America. But other than that? Solstice GXP exists at Saturn. Torrent GXP exists at Chevrolet. G5 GXP doesn't even exist. The G6 with the 3.9 appears to be a bit of a dog, and the 3.6 is available at Chevrolet and Saturn. The Grand Prix GXP V8 was available in the Impala. How far do we have to go back to find a Pontiac with a true performance advantage? 1991 Grand Am Turbo?!?

Come to think of it, I believe you're right. It will supplant the Lucerne/DTS as I recall. (I hope the General has replacements for those in place then or soon after.) But even more importantly, I hope the plant can build the Volt in the numbers necessary.

I guess that's good news for the people of Ohio and Aveo fans (if there are any). I hope the Aveo isn't the POS that it is now. Maybe time for a new name???. Bad news for the Cobalt if production is moving to Mexico. I guess that makes sense with the HHR down there. They can keep them there as far as I'm concerned.

I can't argue with you there. I'm over the big bad Japanese thing as long as Americans are working.

Great now GM will suffer more market share loss when new quality issues surface with the cobalt. The only good thing to come out of mexico is Corona beer and that's it.

Sounds like a smart move to get Astra production out of Europe, with the strong Euro and all. And yes, we need a 40 mpg car.

Re: Report: Aveo Production Moving To Lordstown; Cobalt, Astra Production Goes To Me

I see nothing wrong with the Cobalt being built in Mexico and the new Aveo/G3 being built in Lordstown, nor the Camaro being built in Canada. I have never seen any data that indicates vehicles manufactured in Mexico do not meet the same quality standards as those in the USA or Canada.. A strong N.A. economy requires that Canada,Mexico and the USA eliminate trade barriers so that manufacturing and services be produced and provided in the most efficient manner possible. We all benefit.
