Re: Report: Aveo Production Moving To Lordstown; Cobalt, Astra Production Goes To Me

I don't know about this. Autonews mentions nothing of the Aveo, which tells me that a larger successor to the Cobalt will be made in Lordstown. With the right engine, the Cobalt can get 40mpg. Because of the horsepower and torque of the 1.4 turbo 4, I think a Cobalt sized vehicle will get the nod and not the Aveo; the Aveo is a cheap economy car that turbo charging would provide too high of a sticker for buyers to be interested.

What I think is that the Cobalt will go into rental fleets and its replacement will begin production early next year; probably a cheap version of the Volt, with no battery. For Mexico, I expect a smaller Delta II. Also, the talk of the midsize RWD vehicle could be a mistake and that vehicle could be the next 93 or 91; though it is possible that the Alpha vehicle could see world-wide production from the Ohio plant.

I just don't necessarily believe that quality of vindycity.com.

This agrees with what came out after the UAW agreement.

Hopefully the Saturn Corsa will be built in Lordstown as well.

Why don't they just build them at Moraine?
Because the Morraine plant is not part of the UAW; thus they don't have to worry about strikes should they close the plant, only the workers.

Morraine is one of the most productive plants around...not to mention is one of the largest in the area. Keep in mind the T360 trucks are more complicated than the T800s or T900s are....

GM isn't going to abandon that plant. They might move Trailblazer to the T370 chassis plant in Shreveport and in South Africa, but Morraine will get something else...maybe the Volt or something. You never know.

The RWD car was also listed on the UAW agreement. It will be built at Lordstown as well.

I would agree that having the Aveo made in the US doesnt' make much sense - especially since the margins would be much tighter to make a profit. The only way that making such a small, sub-compact car in the US makes sense is if CAFE standards demand it for GM to boost their combined fleet average above 35mpg.

If not, then I can't imagine they'd make much of a profit at a unionized domestic shop in Ohio.

Rather, I'd like to see a higher profit margin product made in Lordstown and the cheaper/slim-margin product made in Mexico.

I'm all for building a product in the US if it's viable, but GM simply CANNOT lose money on future procuts. This is especially true as they come to relay less and less on high-margin products like SUVs and Trucks in the future.

If all else fails we can become undocumented workers looking for auto jobs in Mexico.

Well, these are all being built here because of contract requirements and strike threats. I believe GM is working towards moving all of these vehicles to Mexico eventually.

Unless GM gave away all their promises to the UAW in the national agreement leaving nothing for the union at Morraine.

I'm hoping Lordstown gets a Cobalt replacement and it is just called something else. I also agree with whomever said the Aveo is too downmarket to get a turbo motor. The Cobalt would be perfect with a 1.4L DI turbo motor tuned specifically for fuel economy.

Wasn't some kind of Delta based 7-passenger MPV part of the new UAW agreement? I wonder how that fits into all of this?

I'm pretty sure that will be at Hamtramck, along with the Volt.
