How long would would take for your primary vehicle's gas mileage to make up for the $20-$30k or so you will spend to buy a new Camaro?

Even having a car that gets double the gas mileage, ie: 40 MPG over one that gets 20 MPG will still only save about $1200 per year.

(assuming both cars are driven 12,000 miles per year, have ~15 Gallon gas tanks, and gas is at $4/Gallon)

That means it would take roughly 20 years for you to make up for the cost of buying a $25k second vehicle. Buying a $12,500 car would take 10 years to make up for, a $6250 car would take 5 years, and a $3125 car 2.5 years. How long does the average person keep a car?

Having only one car that gets bad gas mileage is better than having two, regardless of how good thier mileage is- it still takes too long to make up for the initial investment

...unless you buy a $500 beater i guess.
I don't think that is what he ment dude, People will buy the camaro because they want a Camaro....not to "save" money on gas either way. People will always buy what they like no matter what. I won't spend $35k on a car I hate just because it gets better MPG rather than my "Dream Car" I'll buy what I like.

About 6 months ago I was told certain things were coming earlier than expected and I said that here.

Are you referring to the indy 500? I have not been around much lately so I don't know which Indy race has the unveiling. But you have me excited as I will be at Indy this weekend.

No, it's not being unveiled at a race at all. There's a big Camaro/Firebird enthusiast event in September at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and that's where it will be unveiled. Hopefully there will be a "sneak" attack on the Challenger and Mustang and vehicles will be in dealerships in October, but I'm not holding my breath. GM can't afford to rush production if it risks quality, and they just held their second focus group to try and finalize last minute details. 4 months sounds like a lot of time (an it is), but there can be a big lead time on tooling and such depending on if any major changes came out of the focus group. Hell, it will take a month for minor changes to make it through engineering, and they'll need to test them as well.

Sorry, it is supposed to be unveiled in September at Back at the Brickyard Event

There are rumors that it will be sooner but nobody knows when or where.

Re: Production Camaro Assemblyline pictures!!!

Cool photos. I always like to see assembly line/factory photos, especially when it's the Camaro!

I'm looking forward to these being on the street soon. I hope GM has something to build alongside the Camaro, as this is definitely a niche car, especially in our age of rising fuel costs...

Perhaps this is actually an underground GM effort to keep the vehicle fresh and in the news?
It's not just the design, it's the possible proprietary information embedded in this photos. How GM does stuff, etc.

Boeing had a contract with the Japanese back in the mid-80s but Boeing chopped the joint work when it was noticed that the Japanese guys were taking pictures of everything.

Yep.

I may also recommened that GMI pull these links, just to remain in GM's good graces. The Camaro is a huge product for GM.

Re: Production Camaro Assemblyline pictures!!!

I think one of the the Camaro marketing launch TV commercials should feature the little robot that got fired for dropping a screw. GM gives him a second chance, and assigns him to help build Camaros. When he first sets "eyes" on the new Camaro he gets all excited and wets himself with hydraulic oil.

And none of this will matter, when the Camaro debuts at $4.50/gal gasoline. Maybe even $5/gal. I've been predicting this for over two years now.

The fans will by the first round of Camaros. After that, its anyone's guess as to how well the sales numbers will pan out. I don't car how good the car looks - at $5/gal, its going to be difficult for anyone to justify a purchase....especially when there's a Cobalt and an Aveo sitting across the showroom floor.

I agree that things like this keep the interest high. So many people on various forums discuss everything about this car......kind of like American Idol !!

Please... in the name of all that is holy, avoid voicing any parallels that you see between what will likely be a great car and what is certainly a horrible TV show.

Thanks.

Re: Production Camaro Assemblyline pictures!!!

Getting worried that we won't see a targa or T-Top option on this car.

Ford still perplexes me that they don't offer a sunroof on the Mustang. Instead they are going to offer a glass roof that is solid. Go figure....
