Ford sold a total of 559,451 Mustangs during its first full year (1965). The following year was the largest ever with 607,568 sold. Over 1 million Mustangs sold in two years which is crazy in today's terms.

That was an amazing sales total. There were also fewer choices back then. I don't think we'll ever see those sort of numbers again.

Didn't the Impala alone once sell 1 million in a year back in the '60s?

282K Camaro sales in '79, and the Firebirds best year was also 1979, with over 211,000 sales. What a great year for F-bodies!

And pony cars in general. Mustang sold 370K units, plus another 110K of the (same) Capri!

Funny seeing Camaros of all types, -insert mullet joke here-, being lauded as "cool" cars again.

While trying to stare off into oblivion last night while TMZ is on tv, I overhear them talking about Matthew Mcconaghey (I don't care if it's spelled wrong) driving around in what looked like a 77 Z-28 (black and gold), and how those were "awesome" cars. All of the D-student lackeys were all nodding in agreement.

Too funny. 185hp of pure power baby...

Re: October Camaro production & sales numbers. Beats Mustang for 5th straight month!

The '65 Impala sold over a million units, and it's no surprise, because that car was plum gorgeous and sexy with all those curves!

Yes, '79 was indeed a great year for the ponys!

Camaros and Firebirds have ALWAYS been cool to me and other folks who appreciate them for the American originals and good cars that they are! Ignore the fools who designate theirselves the lords of what cars are cool or not. They don't know squat! And the '77 Z/28 may have only had 185 horses, but it was a plum beautiful car, and it handled pretty good too.

Re: October Camaro production & sales numbers. Beats Mustang for 5th straight month!

I've owned a 2nd (72 T/A), 3rd (85 T/A) and 2 4th's (99 & 02 both Z's) in my life. Still own the last one. Just making fun of the people who 5 years ago would have said it was crap.

On the other hand, there is NO EXCUSE for a performance car to be as slow as a 77 Z-28. The first car above was 5 years older and had a 455HO. 335 net from the factory IIRC. Unfortunately, the 2nd gen was jinxed from the start.

Disclaimer: I prefer early second gens over later models, either brand.

I wouldn't rush to suggest that the drop in Corvette sales was Camaro anticipation. All high-$ cars have trended down over the past two years with similar trends and the C6 is an aging model.

I think there might be some potential Corvette buyers that went the way of the Camaro SS instead, but I think it is a very small effect. The Camaro targets a much broader demographic than the Corvette.

Corvette base MSRP ~$48k
Camaro base MSRP ~$23k

Oh so you were making fun of that bunch? GOOD those fools plum deserve to be made fun of!

But the weakness of the '77 Z28's motor wasn't the fault of the car partner. That was GMs fault for not focusing on how to make it's big motors powerful and fuel efficient at the same time.

My favorite F-Bodies are the 3rd and 2nd generation cars, with the 4th gens a VERY close third!

Re: October Camaro production & sales numbers. Beats Mustang for 5th straight month!

It's interesting, I went the whole summer without seeing one '10 Camaro on the road. Saw a few '10 Mustangs though. Then all of a sudden around the middle of October I see them popping up. Now in the beginning of November I see at least 3-5 a week. Where I work one of the guest had a red one, very nice. Then this weekend out of the corner of my eye I see this bright yellow car parked in a Lowe's parking lot, it was a 2010 Rally Yellow Camaro SS/RS with black rally stripes. The car was stunning, I spotted it from a good 100 yards away and came in to take a closer look.

Wonder why when the weather is starting to get cold they begin to show up?

Re: October Camaro production & sales numbers. Beats Mustang for 5th straight month!

To me, all one has to do is look at the cars to find the winner. The Camaro is the most modern of the three blending the concept of the '67 with modern styling. The others do it too but not nearly as successfully. I'm glad they're all here, but I'm really enjoying my SS and the attention it receives. Glad I worked tinted windows into my deal! LOL

Drop in Corvette sales was due to the economic blowout last fall... but I find it interesting that the Corvette's sales never recovered relative to the broader auto market.

I'd wager that the Camaro is cannibalizing Corvette sales, but since the Corvette is a very slow seller to begin with, it's not like most of the Camaro sales are coming from it. I'd say we're looking at a combination of Camaro fans themselves, some stolen from the Mustang, some stolen from the Corvette, and some stolen from other randoms (328i coupe, Genesis, 370 Zed, etc...).

The most modern in looks? I disagree and think the Mustang has that title.

The whole "mullet" image of the Camaro/Trans Am was basically a creation of some SNL or Second City writer, and it just won't die. Once something gets into the public mind, regardless of truth, it won't easily go away.

I never fit the image of the typical Firebird owner, not even close. I've heard all the mullet and redneck jokes from people who find out that I've owned such cars. The opinions of others have never impacted on my car-buying decisions and, just like people who say these things probably look down on me, I look down on them for their herd mentality.

I've been to meets of f-body owners in the past year, and I went to them in the '80s and '90s. The owners at these meets do not fit this stupid "mullet" stereotype. It's all fiction and made for some good TV skits. You won't find any more mulleted owners of f-bodies than you will find mulleted owners of Civics or Camrys.
