Lutz: Photovoltaic Roof to be Unveiled in January and Development Ahead of Schedule

From GM-VOLT website:

"Lutz Provides More Volt Details: Photovoltaic Roof to be Unveiled in January, and Volt Development Ahead of Schedule

Lutz told reporters that because things have gone so well, the Volt is actually ahead of schedule. He indicated that he was now 99.9% sure the Volt will be a success, and that as a result it will have a transformational effect on the public’s perception of GM’s technological and environmental prowess.

He also discussed issues being worked out for apartment dwellers, and noted one idea would be to persuade garage owners to set aside an area for car charging and discussed the way public chargers would have to be designed so thieves couldn’t steal power. The charger would have a sliding door that locks the cord in place, opening only when a credit card was swiped."

Sweet!

With the roof after a trip, I could go back home with full charge (since I usually park in long term for more then a week if at all). That would mean no gas on the way up to the airport and back (about 37 miles one way).

If the battery is extremely cold, the ICE kicks on to warm it before use.

*sarcasm* Won't happen. GM is doomed and a doomed company can't possibly make something like this. Instead of posting these BS stories how about posting more stories about how GM is toast and there is nothing anybody can do about it. *sarcasm*

Good to hear it's ahead of schedule!
Possibly an early start on production?

The roof option combined with climate control & remote start if setup that way would be great promotional material especially in the southern states.

Cool your car down without unecessary idling of the ICE. or conversely, warming up the car int he northern states with minimal ICE usage.

+1 to GM

At $25K, yes.
At $40K, no.

^^^ Exactly. I expect the take-rate here in Canada to be fairly low unless the pricing is on par with the Camry Hybrid which starts at $30,660. For comparison, the Prius starts at $27,400.

Wow the Prius and the Volt are two different kinds of cars. Theoretically the Volt could go without using gas period if you stay under 40 miles a day. Why would they sell that for the same price as a car that can't claim this?

You know you are still going to have to sit in gas lines in you beloved hybrid toyo or honda. It doesn't happen often but there has been some of that going on lately. 45 minutes waiting for gas in Plano, Texas. But your Volt will roll right past. If you are a true greeny wouldn't you love to tell people you use zero gas, I mean zero 90% of the time.

In my normal driving I would fill up once every 6months, all 7 gallons worth. I make it two weeks in my gas lovin' Goat as it is. And I'm good with that.

Whether you all want to believe it or not...

The VOLT is far more significant today than the Prius was when it launched.

The Prius saves some gas - and not all that much compared to a similar sized, similar powered compact car. The VOLT basically uses NO gas for some people. And those people will be the early adopters.

A Volt's starting to look better and better for us...

I wonder how much more the photovoltaic roof option will cost.

A photovoltaic roof wouldn't really warm the car up it would cool it... the sun hitting the roof is very good to warm the car...
