Looking back: 1984 Chevrolet Camaro vs Dodge Daytona Training Promo

.....But there was a new kid on the block for the pony car set to compete with. Dodge’s new ubiquitously K-car, based Daytona, a sporty front drive GT car that also proved popular, particularly with its turbo powerplant! Lets see how they compare in the eyes of Chevrolet.

Never was a fan of the Daytona, always looked like it was held together with chewing gum. I do remember in a redsign a big deal was made out of having a parking brake actuator on the steering wheel or something like that.

Neat feature on the Camaro with the swivel radio - don't remember that.

Would love to see the Firebird comparison to the Daytona in the electronics department "Firebird comes with the Knight Industries KITT, unavailable at any price in the Daytona".

190 HP from a "high output" 5 liter V8. Those were the days.

Watching both cars take off from the line was funny - a Buick Lacrosse would probably beat both today.

Fun video to watch, thanks for sharing it.

That was the beginning of the second musclecar era. The Mustang has never given up and Chevy and Dodge have returned.

I love how the guy basically makes fun of Dodge's "American Revolution" tag line only to have Chevrolet basically steal it years later. I also like how "'high tech instrumentation'" is in quotes on the graphic.

Oh I remember that. The Berlinetta didn't seem it at the time, but holy hell what a weird interior, like a friggin Citroen...

My mom's 84 Camaro originally had that double ended speedometer. I always thought that was cool as a kid. The car had become pretty ragged by the time I got my license so I passed on it. Then my dad ended up having the whole interior redone. He put a conventional speedometer in it. Of course he also painted it and along with the new engine and transmission my mom put in the car, it was basically brand new when my younger brother got it. FML

I always liked that body style of the Camaro's. The 190 HP 305 4bbl came out first in the Monte Carlo SS in '83 with 175 and later 180 HP. It sounded phenominal in both cars with the roar of its Quadrajet and the rumble of its exhaust - dual mufflers in the MCSS. Real Americana!

You think we are going to look back and laugh at today 30 years from now about the 2013 Camaro SS and it's "only" 426hp?

I don't know why they compared them. They were not the same class of car. My brother had a 84 Daytona turbo and my daughter had a 87 Shelby Charger (both rebuilt totals). The were rough, crude and smaller than the Camaro. Their only claim to performance was the 2.2 turbo. The engine was very weak until the turbo kicked in at about 3,000 rpms. When the turbo kicked in, it would snap your neck and heaven forbid if you we not going straight because they had the worst torque steer I have ever experienced. The Camaro was far from a performance vehicle but it was comfortable.

I have never seen the adjustable pods or swivel radio before. I really like them. Were they a Berlinetta model exclusive?

Yes, they were a Berlinetta exclusive.. The Berlinetta had a cockpit unlike any other Camaro in 1984, the turn signal was a flip lever, the dash had control pods that could be pulled out.. It was pretty radical for its time. Instruments were vacuum flourescent digital display.
