LIFE Magazine Pictures of Terrytown, NY GM Plant

LIFE Magazine Pictures of GM's Terrytown Plant Circa 1960
LIFE Magazine and Google have put all of LIFE's pictures taken over the years onto Google's database. Here are some pictuers taken of GM's old Terrrytown Plant. There are some really good pictures here. With so much going on in the industry, we look back when GM was king of the world. So enjoy these pictures.

This plant closed in 1996 or so right? I think that the last vehicles made there were the U-van(Lumina APV, Trans Sport and Silhouette)

Correct--I toured the plant in 91 when I worked for a Pontiac dealer. Picked up a Transport right from the factory to bring back to LI.

Here are some more depressing pics of what remains.

Just imagine repeating that scene another 300 times across the Midwest. It will be that ugly.

Re: LIFE Magazine Pictures of Terrytown, NY GM Plant

I used to drive across the Tapanzee Bridge a lot in the early 90's and you could see the vehicles poping out of the building every minute or so. I think they were the small Blazers back then. Now when you drive across you see empty concrete, just like the picture above. Very sad.

I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but Tarrytown plant is misspelled throughout this thread. It's not Terrytown.

Cool pics - I didn't know that Life was doing that deal with Google.

The overhead views on Google Earth are amazing, too. You can still see where the assembly line used to wind.

btw, it's Tarrytown

Reminds me of a song...

"There was a factory, now its all mountains and rivers,"

BTW, the message in this song is unusual and neat (if you expect it to lean the usual way songs do - that aren't written by Toby Keith - you'll be surprised).
