No, the Monte Carlo SS is still used as the main car in NASCAR. The Impala SS is only used in 16 (6 so far) select races this year. Next year, it will be full-time. Of course, it will be the "NASCAR Sprint Cup". Ummmm, okay, so they can change their name, but Cingular can't??? Alltel can't??? NASCAR and moreso NEXTEL are trying to abolish all wireless companies from sponsorship starting next year.

Back on topic, maybe the Monte Carlo will make a return to Chevy in 2-3 years as a true RWD sports coupe...

If they only updated the @$$ end of the thing, it might have been more appealing. Everyone would always tell me they liked the overall idea of the car, but the back end was the deal breaker...

Re: The Last Chevrolet Monte Carlo Rolls off The Line

I personally think that GM corrected everything that was wrong with the exterior design of the Monte Calo for the 2006 refresh (albeit, very late). The warped appearance of the rear bumper, the strange looking half clear-lense tail lamps, the "hump" in the trunk-lid of models not equipped with a rear spoiler, the frog-eyed head lamps & basic front end styling in general. Not to mention the disappointing engine lineup (partially excluding the Supercharged 3800 V6 option for the 2004-2005 "SS" models). The interior was & still is definitely lacking in design and quality, but the overall package is hardly as disappointing as many people here make it out to be IMO. The 2006-2007 "SS" models are extremely underrated in terms of performance also, as the Monte weighs less than both the Impala SS & Grand Prix GXP, which all share the same drivetrain. I think all of the the changes that were made for 2006 definitely corrected many of the negative things that plaqued the 2000-2005 models & overall, helped the Monte to go out with a bang.

Does GM need more proof that NASCAR doesn't sell vehicles? Put some pace cars out there, be the official truck. Sponsor some series with decent racing. Save a boatload of money.

BTW, I liked the rear of the car. And I hated the grill.

That sucks too see it go, but as with other products they had fallen away from what the car orginally intended to be. I guess that just makes room for the 2010 Beretta I was hoping for...right???

Re: The Last Chevrolet Monte Carlo Rolls off The Line

Too bad. I remember from my childhood that the mid-late 70's Monte Carlo's were some of the most striking, distinctive, head-turning cars out there. One of the "dream cars" of my youth was a '76 Monte Carlo with swivel bucket seats, padded landau top.

Fast forward nearly 30 years and I'm driving a 2004 Monte Carlo SS all black with some red "Intimidator" lettering, 3800 supercharged V6. Goes like stink, handles decently, quiet and rides well, but I'm thinking this is nothing more than an Impala with a marginally nicer interior and a really ugly big-butt rear end.

Back in its heyday the Monte Carlo was really something unique and special. It's sad that the current car couldn't live up to its past glorious reputation. RIP Monte Carlo, you'll be gone but not forgotten.

Re: The Last Chevrolet Monte Carlo Rolls off The Line

I hate to see it go. Probably my second or third top favourite model of car made by any manufacturer (in the normal person's affordable range). Means we'll hang on to our 2000 Monte SS longer, that's all.

Great cars, unique styling (love it or hate it), most winning nameplate in NASCAR history IIRC. Hopefully the product to replace it catches my attention like the Montes do.

Re: The Last Chevrolet Monte Carlo Rolls off The Line

Great Name, Great Car, and Dull Styling( ). Dull Styling is the reason why I'm not driving an SS now.

So Long Monte .

Note to GM: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE, I REPEAT, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE SHOULD THE MONTE CARLO BE RE-REBORN AS A SEADAN OR WORST A WAGON.

Beretta, I miss My 89 Beretta GT (2.8 Liter MFI V6 130hp/160tq) with an (Optional) 3-speed Auto that drove like a manual was often underestimated. When punched it would quickly Launch off line putting you in your seat. When It came to a drag race the 89 Beretta GT with a 3-speed Auto was NO JOKE!

Good news in my book, I never understood this car. But it's sad that Cheverolet did not see fit to have a coupe ready for the Malibu.
