Re: The Last Chevrolet Monte Carlo Rolls off The Line

I love my 95 Z34. I know it is fundamentally a tarted up Lumina coupe but I don't care. It ran like a scalded dog, and it handled pretty well for FWD. I agree with everyone who said that it should have switched to RWD in 2000, but put a long stretch of highway in front of it and you could cruise for hours in relative comfort.

Re: The Last Chevrolet Monte Carlo Rolls off The Line

The size of the monte is one of the things i like about it. I can stuff a lotta crap in it. (Even a 10' 2x4 and still close the trunk) The weight of the car isn't bad either, it helped this winter when we got socked by 10" of snow in February. (Mine was one of the few cars that could move in our unplowed lot) Even though its two doors, its still big enough to haul 5 of my friends around in comfort. (Guess who normally gets to drive...) I will miss the new ones. I will have mine until the wheels fall off of it.

Was the Monte Carlo really considered luxury?

Re: The Last Chevrolet Monte Carlo Rolls off The Line

The coupe segment, while not as strong as it has been in the past, is still alive. Otherwise Honda would have abandonded the Accord coupe for the 2008 redesign. It will be back, in full ranges from a cloth 4 cylinder to the leather trimed V6. But, most importantly, it will be available with a manual transmission, even with the V6.

That is one thing, albeit minor, that I belive GM has and will continue to overlook. Think about it..... if the Monte Carlo SS had been available with a slick shifting 6 speed stick, wouldn't it have sold alot more? I think it would have. In fact, I think the SS line for ALL Chevys should be built WITH and ONLY with a manual transmission.

In the hey days of 2 door coupes (1970's to early '80's), the Monte class cars were referred to as personal luxury coupes. Back in 1976, cars such as the Pontiac Grand Prix (2 door only at that time), Olds Cutlus Supreme (top seller in '78), Chrysler Cordoba, etc. were all the rage. These were the cars that the maufacturers put their most popular features on such as cruise, power locks and windows, air, sunroofs and all the other features that we now take for granted 30 years later.

Sales of coupes, especially ones that aren't in at least one of these categories:

1. True sports cars.
2. Compact FWD "sporty" cars.
3. Models that come with a convertible.

No longer sell. Period.

I am very sad to see a name with such a long and proud history, retired. At least GM is doing it well considering the circumstances.

CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO, RIP.

And thats the problem, another well known name with plenty of public awareness left to wither on the vine.........But don't worry GM will come up with new lame name and spend millions trying to market it to the masses. I thought GM learned from the Park Ave and Regal the power of longstanding nameplates.

Sometimes I don't know if GM marketing is runned by old geezers stuck in the 70s or new age whiz kids trying to reinvent the wheel.
