Interesting Quote In IIHS Report On Uplander

Link: http://www.iihs.org/news/2005/pr110605.html

While the story here is on the tested minivans, the following quote is of some interest to GM fans -

"The Institute didn't test the Chevrolet Uplander or the Dodge Grand Caravan/ Chrysler Town & Country minivans because design changes intended to improve their performance in side impact crashes are under way. The Institute will test these vehicles plus the redesigned Kia Sedona early next year."

The only thing I can think of is the new thorax side airbag on the middle seats was not ready in time for the test.

Anyone?

I think you are probably right. Chevy is not making any other changes now, or are they?

I don't know of any changes currently underway on the Dodge, either. My bet is that they witheld the Chevy and Dodge so that they have a group when they test the '06 Sedona.

The next gen. Lambda based minivans aren't due until '08/'09. Unless GM has changed the dates by 2 years. Most likely just an addition of more airbags.

I think the Lambda vans are due in 08. Anyone notice that the CSVs have 6 lug wheels just like the Lambda crossovers?

Re: Interesting Quote In IIHS Report On Chevrolet Uplander

First thing they need to do, after designing a completely new model that families actually might buy, is to find another name for it. Uplander is a ridiculous name for a Chevrolet minivan...

Nomad, Townsman, Beauville, Bel Air, (only if it comes with a very cool moonroof), Celebrity, Cameo, Kingswood, Lakewood, Parkwood --- the Chevrolet stable of model names is too deep; even Venture sounds better than Uplander.

C'mon, Chevy -- you can do way better than this....

Re: Interesting Quote In IIHS Report On Chevrolet Uplander

I liked the name "Venture" better than "Uplander". I dont understand why they even changed it.

Re: Interesting Quote In IIHS Report On Chevrolet Uplander

My theory is that GM changes names because they hope they can attract new buyers. If a Honda/Toyota owner hears that the Venture is unreliable and not up to the level as the competitors and read bad things about it such magazines as CR or C&D, etc. then if GM came out with a new model still on the old platform with the same old engine and tranny choices they hope they will be fooled. I think GM hopes an import owner sees the Uplander thinks, "Wow, that must be all new and must be better than the competition" and goes out and buys it when in reality it isn't. But that's just my opinion and nothing I said is factual.

Dodge slapped the Charger name on a four door and it worked wonders. Maybe GM should call their next minivan the Camaro. Hey, more seating= more sales.

I know, I know, I'm going to hell for this.

How about somebody photoshop some retro Camaro styling cues onto the Uplander? (just kidding...although I am kind of curious now)
