Interesting Marketing: GM Ad Compares Equinox *Diesel* To Honda CRV

    Source: General Motors

It appears that General Motors will be pushing the diesel option in the Equinox in their marketing. The following may be a sign of things to come.

GM will apparently be backing this diesel reincarnation much more than the last (2014 Cruze), which was almost an invisible offering...and thus sold like one.

GM management should be congratulated for taking a shot at the untested market for diesel CUVs.

Perhaps there are thousands of Volkswagen TDi owners who might like to step up to a CUV. This would also make a great corporate vehicle for salespeople, UBER drivers, etc.

    Would you consider one?

Diesel Equinox is a splendid idea and I wish GM every success with it.

It seems amazing, what a Market, a True Emission Test will reveal.

But as far as the rest of the Comparisons? Really GM Advertising needs to "Focus" on strengths, rather than "Hacking at" the Competition. "Real People" or not, why not just focus on 40 MPG! without the Trivial options, even though others may not have them.

Well granted, I believe the Equinox 1.5T only does 32 MPG highway, so...

    Good move for the customer.

Too bad Chibby's PR department, if you could even call it that, is dictionary-definition inept and laughable.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out. A few years ago, this would have been a really hot product because both CUVs and diesels were gaining in popularity. Since then, there has been dieselgate and a strong shift towards electrification (named the #1 automotive trend for 2017).

Will CUV popularity and lack of PHEV options be strong enough to outweigh the negative image of diesels?

Are diesels really still popular and what we hear is just negative propaganda from those who don't intend to sell them?

I guess we'll find out later this year. If Honda produces a PHEV CRV as they have promised, we'll really have a fight to watch.

Most americans have no idea about the diesel issue with VW. Unless you are a car person. Many may be happy to just see the high mileage. Gm needs to get this right and make sure the sales people explain all the different maintenance regarding a diesel and regular gas engine to potential buyers. Otherwise this could blow up in their face.

I suspect the general population doesn't even care or remember the VW scandal. GM's biggest issues are to 1) overcome its own poor marketing, 2) poor consumer perceptions of GM, 3)poor diesel perceptions due to the 1980's fiasco, 4) the perception that if you want fuel efficiency you need to buy Asian.

As my commute has become a daily 90 mile round trip the idea of a diesel does resonate with me.

And GM should try to target disillusioned VW diesel owners, those owners are really a small niche. GM needs this to go mainstream, which brings us back to marketing.....

I have no issue with GM comparing the diesel to the Honda 1.5. I'm assuming the 1.5 is the best CRV engine for mpgs, so they should be compared - best possible non-hybrid mpg's for each lineup.

Good point FenwickHockey65. The diesel engine really sets the new Chevy Equinox apart. It's just as well that GM didn't compare its 1.5 liter turbo gasoline engine to Honda's, as the Honda 1.5 liter is better in every way - more powerful, more efficient, and smoother.

Oh yes, happy Spring Equinox to everyone here at GM Inside News in the Northern Hemisphere, and Autumn Equinox to the folks down under!

I think this comparison is a big mistake because it might cause potential customers to look at the CRV. It will not turn out well for GM. Thw 2017 CRV is head and shoulders above the Equinox and the ad will drive customers to the CRV.

Let's see, an American Made CUV with an American Made engine and American Transmissions Versus a Canadian assembled CUV with an Italian Engine and Mexican Made 9 speed..Hmm decisions decisions.

If the Equinox diesel will be successeful in the market, I won't be surprised then Ford and FCA will reply asap with Explorer/Escape diesel, Cherokee/Compass diesel.
