Yeah, they definitely did. I think that's a close rendering to the leaked photo, but not as attractive. I am not an SUV kind of guy, but the previous photo we've seen of the actual 2010 Equinox was a car I'd actually consider buying. I'd be afraid to touch the vehicle rendered here for fear of cutting my fingers off and bleeding to death from it's sharp edges...OUCH!

Following the leak of an extremely low-resolution image of the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox, our artist has created an illustration of the redesigned SUV. Not only is the new image easier on the eyes, but the restyled ‘ute is considerably better looking than its predecessor, too.

Code-named GMT172, the Equinox will have strong family ties to the Malibu and Traverse — Chevrolet’s signature cross-bar is prominent on the front grille.

Earlier spy shots gave us an idea of what to expect on the inside. Even at first glance, it’s clear that the Equinox’ interior will be getting a significant update over the current model’s. The interior looks quite upscale and even has a family resemblance to the recently unveiled Opel/Vauxhall Insignia. Twin-pod gauge clusters look to be the future of GM interiors.

Judging by how far along the interior looks, it would seem that the Equinox is nearing production readiness. With an on-sale date in the early part of 2009, look for GM to officially unveil the Equinox at one of the first U.S. auto shows of the season. Production starts in March of 2009 at the CAMI facility, with sales following shortly afterwards.

I SINCERELY hope the Equinox will not look like this when it comes out!

Looks like somebody put a Chevy grille on the last-gen Acura MDX!

Just because Chevy is going global, doesn't mean that they shouldn't have their own (non-retro) traditional look.

I have to respectfully disagree completely.

I don't think this new rendition is bad looking at all. But it doesn't hold a candle to our 2008 Equinox Sport.

As someone else said, it's more feminine looking. I prefer our more masculine '08 Sport over this.

Smooth headlights that appear to be tilted eyes are one trait.

Most anything that could be considered 'cute' is generally effeminate where a car is concerned.

Most feminine looking vehicles on the road today are VW's. They seriously need to 'butch it up' a little.

The Scirocco looks like a step in that direction, but they have no plans to import it to NA.

I guess VW (Jetta and EOS ride high), and Chevy with its new Equinox, are happy with their target market. Those crossovers are the ideal height for professional women in skirts, so they can get in and out of them without pulling a Britney Spears.

I recall in a previous thread fairly recently that there hadn't been mention of a 3rd row in quite some time so the assumption was that it won't have it. However someone chimed in saying that it would indeed have a 3rd row or at least an optional one. I don't recall now. I'm sure it will be quite small if it has one. Not roomy and usable by adults like the Traverse. Many 3rd rows are used by kids anyway so offering a small 3rd seat makes sense to me. Not everyone wants a huge vehicle just to haul a couple of extra kids around part of the time. Personally I'm waiting for a Zafira to be offered here through Saturn or Chevrolet. Something fuel efficient with 2+3+2 seating.

Re: Illustrated: 2010 Chevrolet Equinox

the looks are one thing (they look great) but what will really define this vehicle will be the power plant. i'm anxious to see if they saty with a 6 cylinder or if they introduce a 4 cylnder to capture the 'greening' of the SUV market.

i also wonder how long before the dual mode hybrid gets dropped into other applications than just the Tahoe and Silverados...this would be a perfect vehicle and time to introduce a hybrid equinox to run up against the hybrid escape from ford.

A previous article said that a 2.3L direct injection four-cylinder will be the standard engine.

The new Equinox will be sized more like the Edge/Murano than the Escape, which is all the more reason to have a two-mode hybrid version.

Supposedly, a new compact crossover based off Gamma is coming that will be Escape/CR-V sized.

Re: Illustrated: 2010 Chevrolet Equinox

I agree that there is a strong resemblance to the Acura MDX. Have they confirmed the drivetrain line up?

I never understood why GM continued to use the old 185 hp 3.4L ohv V6 in this and the Torrent but backed it by a modern 5 speed automatic. I have read in more than one place that this engine is built in China, which probably is cheaper due to labor costs, but its power ratings are identical to that of the 3.4 built in North America. When these SUVs came out, the stronger and more economical 3.5L ohv V6 (200 hp or so) had already replaced the 3.4 in all car lines, IIRC. If not, it was within a year or so. And, GM never offered the larger V6 available in many other FWD vehicles: the 3.9L 242 hp ohv V6. Instead, it offered a more costly, less fuel efficient 3.6L OHC V6, albeit with more power.

These two SUVs offer a lot to consumers: a great size with tons of cargo space and passenger room plus very good economy and handsome styling. Too bad the powertrains weren't better. I might have bought the Pontiac.
